🔴 Do you find street photography motivation hard or easy? 📸 Recently I’ve had a hard time with inspiration, so I made this video. Hopefully it helps you a bit if you’ve struggled with inspiration too (hit like on the video if you’ve found it helpful!). Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
"Take up professional dance instead." Genius! Thanks for sharing these reminders about all the little things out there to photograph just waiting to be noticed. There's so much beauty in the ordinary. Cheers!
Be a photographer and not a genre, so much out there to photograph. So I totally agree with you. Ernst Haas, my biggest inspiration but there are many more.
Thank you for the inspirational words. My teaching job does dictates me to go through same rute, same station, same place. *Immer öfter* I get the inspiration from your work and your vlogs where you share your difficulties makes yourself become relatable to us.
Haha. I live in Stroud and I was agreeing with you all along and when I realised you live in Cheltenham I laughed. I watch photographers in NYC or Tokyo and feel that I’ll never get shots like they do. It is really tough on your motivation. Great video ;-)
Another fab video - Sometimes for me if I am struggling with creativity and looking for inspiration, just go out and aim for any location and 9 times out of 10 something catches my interest and sets the creativity going. It's all about not forcing it and being aware of your surroundings, look up and down as a lot of people can miss what is happening on the pavement, road and gutters.
I got what I think is a good candid portrait at an event yesterday. Made some real stinkers too. Oh well, goes with the territory. I currently have the companion book to Lee Friedlander's 2005 exhibit at The Museum of Modern Art "Friedlander" checked out from my local library. Nearly 800 photos in that book. Lot's of inspiration there.
Oh fantastic! I’d love to see that book. I think a lot of people miss the value in libraries, photo books can be very expensive but libraries often have a great selection. Glad to hear you got a keeper - the more you take photos the more keepers you get and you just throw away the bad ones - all part of the process 🙏🏻
Quality take on this frequent theme, Tim. Valid points; risk offending Amsterdam viewers😊. IMO, it is quite natural to have inspiration slumps - we need them to prevent burnout. Just let inspiration come back organically, instead of following a plan. Don’t force it. Kids at play are naturally creative, without formal plans, and they do great. Somehow the kid’s approach gets repressed in adults - but it’s still there. Good pics are everywhere, as are bad ones. Takes our “license to see” to sort them out, after going through the “learners’ permit” phase. (Couldn’t resist that one, sorry😊.) BTW, in your thumbnail you don’t appear unmotivated or uninspired at all😊. Cheers!
Another thought-provoking video - thanks Tim. I had started to think I needed to go out with a theme/project in mind and when I did this I stopped focussing on other things and became deflated when I didn't see much. This has made me think again.
Thanks Pam! Yeah projects and themes can be handy to look for but sometimes it can be beneficial to just go out with an open mind and see what happens 🙏🏻
I think i`m going to go grab a coffee, kill a bit of time looking at the photograph section in waterstones, find some inspiration, and kill a bit of time. Bravo 👌
Haha, yeah there is no substitute for doing the thing, but second best to that is learning about the thing or looking at others doing the thing. Usually that’s enough to give me a spark to do the thing myself 🙏🏻
Thank you Tim for your inspiring video, i am a street photography and felt like giving up last week , but i guess all photographers go through this sometimes ,
Ah thanks for your comment, Vicky! Photography is really hard, especially street photography, we definitely all go through it often, but you’ll definitely find your spark again if you keep going :)
Well its Monday tomorrow probably will rain but I'm going to dress for it take my water repellent XT1 with 23mm and 35mm water repellent lenses F2 couple of battery's get the bus into town and capture what ever takes my eye sitting at home just pondering going out and not doing so in the end is really no good I hear your motivation message brother Tim inspiration grips me to go for it thanks for the Video it has really made me think Tim I think we all get times of no motivation it creeps up on you I cant read anymore books or look at photos on line time to get out there and capture a few keepers rain or shine I'm out tomorrow God willing.......
Fantastic, yes just get out there and make some pictures, it’s the only way to get motivated, even if you don’t come away with anything good. I’ve never regretted going out, but I’ve always regretted not going out when I could have. Happy shooting mate! 📸
Thank you for sharing all this thoughts and findings. While I was listening to you, I wondered what would become of all the photos you take? How will they be used? Where will they be shown to whom and how? Do you have a system for sorting and further utilization? I would love to see a video on this aspect of street photography.
Hey! Thanks for your comment. Good question, one day I’d like to make a physical book/s. Currently I use the photos in my TH-cam videos, on social media, on my website and in educational content I’m making. I also just love the process so the end result isn’t too important. All the photos I take help me get better and occasionally I get one I really like that goes into the portfolio :)
Everything is photographable-gary winogrand Being moved to a rural town from a city center is my situation..I agree there are always something to capture it's all up to u the artist...
Brill video, Tim!! Very thought-provoking. I think can be adapted to lots more too! P.s. I will share some guilt that I slightly.. well a bit laughed at your reaction to "I wish I had my camera" to capture the moment of the child falling. No moments off 😂.
Haha thanks Courts! Moral of the story I guess is that nothing compares to actually doing the thing, but when doing the thing is hard, learn about doing the thing or watch people doing the thing. At least that’s what usually makes me go out and do the thing. Wasn’t sure if folks would get the boy on the bike bit, thought it might make some viewers think I’m heartless, but was meant in jest haha. Thanks for the comment as always!
The club is also a good place for inspiration and motivation. If you were interested I could ask about you being a guest speaker. Hopefully I will see you one day on the street of Cheltenham.
My god! I photograph bottles, cans and glasses of alcoholic beverages left on the sidewalks of Brasília. Is this a good photograph? I've also photographed the trash.
If you *really* can't find any inspiration, seek professional help, consult a psychologist or some other specialist. I mean it; no offence intended. See, I am convinced that, in order to (at least try to) make interesting photos, a photographer must be interested in those things and people him/herself. "Nothing to shoot" may mean "nothing interests me", and that's a warning bell for a depressive condition developing. I'm talking from my own experience: the war in my country killed a lot of earlier inspirations for me.
Very good motivational video. But… William Eggleston…. Has some good pictures, but generally, like the Turner prize, many of his pictures are nothing to the common man.
@@timjamiesonphotos 😉😊 I hate to feel embarrassed if I don’t understand a piece of art. At the Towner art gallery in Eastbourne, there’s a set of pipes coming out of the wall to nowhere. I thought they were part of the building. Oh no, they’re part of the Turner prize! 😳🙄

Hmmm...might nick this!

@3:53 is one of the best/funniest street photos I’ve ever seen. The way she’s looking at the camera in the mirror. 😂😂😂😂😂
Haha thank you! Glad you think so 📸👀
I watch your video for inspiration instead of photo books! Great video!
Ah that’s so kind, thanks!

Yeah I hear ya, art is very subjective and often controversial, that’s where it’s power lies though I think :)
