    Nearly perfect, perhaps even more perfect for its humanity. I only wish this was a video instead of just audio. Definitely one of the best Tannhausers out there. I appreciate celibidache more and more as I age.

    The profoundly symphonic overture of Tanhäuser represents, for me, one of the summits of the history of music. It trascends opera, even though its themes appear in all their majestic splendor during its development. But in my opinion the operatic nature of Tanhäuser (and perhaps most of Wagner) pales confronted with the tremendously charged symphonic weight. Celibidache was a master of large scale, profound symphonies (Brückner, Beethoven). The majestic symphonic soul of Wagner opera grows to new heights under him.

    From 15:04 the Music is no longer "just" Music; it becomes transcendental. An apotheosis of notes that takes us to very high peaks. Wagner reached God here!

    Tannhauser always sounds deliciously different with each of the great conductors leading the way. Always a bit different, and I appreciate how a conductor can make it his own. No exception here, and this is almost 90 years ago, the recording is excellent.

    What a wonderful performance... Because I'm not a musician, I don't know about the details in this piece, but I felt that there is some flow of music and the conductor grabs that and leads to the coda. Bravo!! Thanks for upload.

    Chelibidache is indeed very great in that overure, often considered as rhapsodic while it is a perfect sonata d form. He takes both care of rendering all the melodic and harmonic details and making us perceive this overarching construction. I was impressed indeed by this performance.

    Thank you for posting this. I mean no disrespect to those who have already commented, but I do not believe this performance shows Celibidache at anywhere near his best. It seems to me too careful, understated, and sectional to sustain the long, tense, dynamic arc toward a triumphal finale intended by the composer, and appropriately exploited by most conductors -- chief among them, perhaps, C.'s contemporary (and your namesake) Wilhelm Furtwangler.

    Am I the only guy who, when hearing any of Wagner's work, as profound and beautiful as it is, think of Adolph Hitler?
    I love Wagnerian music, but the fact that he was Hitlers favorite composer always contains an undercurrent of justification for Nazism and eugenics therories in Hitlers mind.
    The Nazi bastard used Wagner's music to gird his beliefs in the superiority of the Arian race.
    If I remember correctly, Wagner was a bit of an anti-semite himself which surely played into Hitlers grandiose aims, beliefs, and delusions.
    I am of German ancestry, and make no apologies for loving Wagners music, but the feeling is always there, surfacing whenever I listen to Wagner's compositions.
    If I've offended anyone, please forgive me.

      @walshamite 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Third Reich did purloin this music for its own ends. I recognize that the state of Israel, and Jewish performers, had to go through a long process of reconciliation about Wagner. My reaction to Celibidache is to recall his notorious prejudice against women musicians. Should I let that influence me? Probably not. After all, it seems all creative artists have some major flaw. If we focus on their faults, we miss a lot of their art. That doesn't mean we condone their shortcomings but, merely, that we choose to see past them.

    • @uralbob1

      @@walshamite We all, plumbers, lawyers, doctors, engineers, etc. have major flaws. It’s that artists have a more difficult job concealing them at times.

      Herr Tisch, read both sides then judge. I am from Formosa, colony of American imperialism. They say ancient Athens is the zenith of the Ancient Greece civilization, but still it is the Athenian Empire. Read Thucydides, then Plato, then you will understand democracy in it's original form, the great tragedies belong to that Empire and imperialism. No great music from Germany after WW2, it is no accident. Nazi Germany at least had Reni Riefenstahl and Carl Orff.
