I coated all of my poly bushings with Formula 5 Prelube to help prevent squeaking. Nice work as always, I don't have the patience it takes to video my 4Runner mods but glad guys like you do!
Austin, thank you so much for making this video. This gave me the confidence to do this on my own and it made my first gen taco handle so much better. It feels brand new!
Awesome job! I do not think I have anywhere near your patience! Now, I’m thinking line-x on the skid plate, fender flares, bottom sides from the rock guard up to the molding, then, THE REAR BUMPER!!! 😁👍🏼 Great show man!
You're saving people some $$ with these videos. A shop would charge an arm and a leg - probably sell the owner a whole steering rack job. Good vid! Thanks
Went to change bushings out on my 09Tacoma access cab (I believe = to 4th gen 4 runner) boot was half full of fluid, leak hadn't shown itself yet. Ended up replacing the whole rack.(for any who know yes, I cut the bolt, it is now installed top down ) Biggest PITA job I've done on a vehicle. New rack came with neoprene bushings, drives like a dream. You do great videos, direct and easy to watch. Whats next?
You should have sprayed the metal sleeves and bolts with white lithium grease, they would have slid in easier. White lithium doesn’t hurt the poly bushings, plus it keeps them from squeaking. The only reason I know is because we did it on some military equipment and some race cars
HEY Austin! Great video! I'm an old school mechanic and it was common knowledge that oil and rubber DO NOT MIX! U should have known that basic law. U must be self taught! I am a veteran of the US Navy! Went to the best schools in the military and got a tremendous amount of info to help in my career! 20 yers as a boat engineer. 20 yrs in construction.! U need to know basic laws of physics and chemistry to be a successful mechanic! Math and janitorial skills as well. Dont ever say u dont know. It does not leave a good impression. Just a Lil FYI!
Did that knock your alignment off? I have a 96 Tacoma that I want to do. My bushings weren't bad yet last time I checked but want to do that swap. Keep up he good work!
Nice video. I got a question my 96 Toyota 4runner shakes and my steering wheels shakes when I'm going over 70 mph and when i break. Do you know what can I check and how do i know my rack and pinion is bad? What kind of tires brand are those? Thank you
So I have a 98 tacoma limited edition. I have had it since 2000. This is a very sentimental truck to me. Anyway don't have the confidence to do what you do. Would you be willing to take it and work your magic to it?
I don't know why toyota used gummy bear material for these bushings... pretty common issue, I have done a few of these. If unattended it will ruin the outer seals, then you may as well replace the rack. The poly bushings are worth it! Even on a new rack too!
The bushings on this unit are not intended to move, more to insulate from vibration and shock. Lithium grease should not be used since it will cause premature slippage and bushing deterioration due to petroleum contamination.
@@austinniemela neoprene is too hard and brittle. It turns into plastic bits then just starts breaking apart. I just changed out some energy bushings on the same rack yesterday. The big ring was gone down to a 1/4 chunk remaining. The downward bushing was half left. The large bolt bushing on the left had deteriorated to nothing on the inner bushing. It's mostly a gimmick and I have replaced more of that material bushing than I can count.

So glad you did this, as my finace has a 4 Runner and I have a Tundra. So watching is educational.
Great job, it’s nice to see someone who cares about their stuff enough to do the maintenance to make them last 😁

Nice job on the vid AND the 4r.
I’m about to change these out on my ‘01.
You handle that old Eswing like a framer!
Sipping some post-work Lagavulin to get some thoughts on doing this on T100. About to look for a similar kit. Thanks for the great content!
Awesome video! Thanks! Replacing my bushings ASAP!
slap some flat black paint on that skid plate the next time you have it off!
C clamp is a great idea! Thanks!
I'm ready for the first gen 4 door tacoma build, Let's go.
Great segment 👍🏾
Thanks for watching

Nice video, Thanks.
Thank you too!
was your steering stiffer after installing the new bushings?
No not at all!
My new bushings have been sitting for a year waiting on me to install lol

No i dont think it messed with the alignment at all!
When he said new projects coming I laughed with excitement.

See that bushing in the differential drop arm? That's the bugger I'd like to see you replace.

Greetings, what tire number do you have 33 "installed?
nice job buddy. Im new to your channel, keep up the good work.
Welcome aboard!
How long would you say it took you?
EXCELENTE !!1
Purple power and power wash the front under side. Paint the John brown skip plate please.
So you were able to do this without disconnecting the rack from either knuckle?
Yes!
Muito bom 👍
Like new!

Before this video I did not even know steering rack bushings were a thing.
You'd get tons of intense vibration if it was steel on steel with no buffer.
👏👏👏👏
What motor is in that 4 runner? I’m curious I don’t know much about them.
Its a 3.4L V6!
I have absolutely no f****** clue how everybody on TH-cam says this is so easy this is the most impossible task I have ever taken on
Maybe you didn’t show it but white lithium grease should always be used with polyurethane. Polyurethane and metal will always speak once they seat in.

The steering rack is aluminum, not metal

You can buy the build plans at www.avrcustoms.com

whats your next project? jeep? after karate chopping the like button, im really looking forward for future videos! keep on ratcheting that nut!
Thanks! Its another toyota!
This guy got the job done, but if you want to see this same parts kit installed a little more professionally, check out Timmy the Toolman's video.
How much did you pay for the wheels and tires all together? I was wanting a pair of those wheels man!
I think he used his girlfriends tax refund to buy them!

Why is that?

Not me coming back to this video 5 months later because my 98 Tacoma has a lot of slop and I needed to see how to replace the bushings
