    That's so cool you're still playing Schecter stuff! Great video, and great tones. I liked all 3 tbh.
    Watching this makes me wonder, what are some of your favorite pickups? I've played a lot more guitars since I last commented on your Apocalypse Bass demo, and I still can't find anything as awesome as those pickups.

      The Apocalypse pickups are hard to beat. What i've been using lately though are EMG X series. I've got a shootout on them for bass coming up. Depending on the project I go for a PJ set or PP set. Thanks for the good word on the video, and visiting the channel again!

    This has to be the best pickup demo I've ever seen. One thing seldom discussed in demos is the feel of a pickup. It's extremely important but gets glossed over by discussions of the tone. The two go together. I haven't tried any of these sets, but I have owned a lot of active EMG sets over the decades, and I've been using EMG since 1986, so I'm no spring chicken when it comes to these pups. But I've never tried their passive pickups. I've been curious. I've been leaning in the direction of the Friedman set and this demo convinced me it may be the way to go. But I'm curious about all three sets. The characteristic that's the hardest to find in pickups is clarity. This is why I've been such an 81 stalwart for all these years. I still love it. But I wanted to see what EMG can do with passive technology. It looks like they're on the right track. What I like about passives is the feel. It's not that you can't get a good feel out of the right actives, but I do find they can feel a bit compressed at times. If I can achieve the tone and feel of actives in passives than I need to give it a try.

      Rodney is pretty much on point. His comparison is more accurate cause he used the same guitar, whereas I have them in 3 different style guitars. Cool thing is with EMG solderless system, they can easily be swapped.
      I find the Rev set actually brightened up the Les Paul and added more bite and clarity. I would like to think of it as putting a Boss SD1 in front of a gain amp. It just adds a slightly more punch.
      The Friedman in the Flying V provides a smooth and well rounded sound.
      The DMF in my ESP is probably my favorite. I also think it’s the most versatile. You can set it up and play any style from punk to rock to metal. It has a very tight and response bottom, which is why I prefer. It could be due to the additional poles in the pickup. Really dig the sound DMF.

    • @shaindyer4053

      Out of the three which set would you say is the most versatile? I’m doing an es 335 upgrade and I play a lot of Metallica type stuff, grunge and heavier punk. I appreciate a good clean sound too. I was looking into one of these sets over the h4/h4a combo. What would you recommend?

      It's funny, the DMF were made for a punk guy! The DMF and Revelation are pretty close to each other in overall EQ curve. The DMF is just a little more edgy and has less mids in the 500k area. Thanks for checking it out!

    I have an ESP EII Eclipse that came with EMG 57/66 set and while I love the compression you get with active pickups on bass, I struggle with that reduced dynamic range on guitar. The benchmarks for tight aggressive rhythm guitar tone for me that I go for on that instrument are Hetfield circa Justice/Black Album and Dimebag circa Far Beyond Driven, but I find myself yearning for more punch/attack/dynamic than I can achieve with active EMGs or "rails" design passive pickups like the L500XL. Are there specific passive EMG designs you might recommend based on this? It would be nice to keep with the EMG aesthetics as the whole guitar is cosmo black hardware and the brushed black chrome EMGs just really look gorgeous with everything else. Love your channel, cheers 🍻

    • @RodneyMcG
      @RodneyMcG  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      My current favorite is a hybrid, and doesn't have the metal cover unfortunately. I'm using the Hot 70. It's a passive attatched to an active base. It has the extended passive thickness, but agressive as hell. Maybe that would work for you. Thanks for checking out the video.

    • @paistefever
      @paistefever ปีที่แล้ว

      I use 81 in the bridge but I play with low gain, pointing to the LED indicator on my 6505 but the volume I crank it to the 12 o'clock and going directly into the amp without anything. Works for me for tight busy riffs and open strums when hitting power chords or open chords.
      See if that helps.

    Hey man! Great video! I'm thinking about buying the rev set. One of my guitars produces a lot of noise and hum (not the wiring) do you think the EMGs would help? The active ones are almost noiseless. How is the Rev set? Are they as noisy as passives? Or they are more like active pickups in that regard?
    Thanks!

      The Friedman is closest, but still going to be different. Passives will have much more low end and less compression.

  • @thomasfischer9259

    I honestly could not hear a difference with the small exception the revelation sounded a tad stronger than the other two. It would be more interesting to hear them live unprocessed across 3 different amps with all setting set at noon, as well as a clean section.

  • @johnstewart7619
    @johnstewart7619 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So the neck pickup on the Revelation set is listed at 13.8k (which is a little hotter then the bridge at 13.5k), just wondering if you swapped the 2 positions would there be a noticeable difference, or are they voiced particularly to the neck and bridge position. I am going to order a set and only plan to use one in the bridge, so looking for opinions or suggestions on which one? Thanks

    • @RodneyMcG
      @RodneyMcG  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sure the sound would be different as they have different voicings, not just output. Interesting experiment though. I may have to do it. Since it's a quick connect, I would say try both. It's an easy swap. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts. Glad the video helped.

    One more Q. Whats the general EQ like on the DMFs?

  • @oliverp.1665
    @oliverp.1665 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hopefully you will respond. So I have been eyeing the DMF for a while now. I thinking of installing them in a schecter E-1 prototype. Now I normally would have put a emg 81/60 in there but it came stock with passives and it would be a pain to make everything fit most likely having to resort to installing a battery compartment. Now would you say the DMF would be good for metal? I like the tightness of the 81. Thanks

    • @RodneyMcG
      @RodneyMcG  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know that I would go with the "good for metal" description as everybody has a different thought on what that means. There's a lot of different metal tones! And I don't know if you noticed, but I was playing metal with it 😂 It's definitely got good output, and what will be the most different will be the mount of lows you get vs a 81. 81s and 85s are high and low passed pretty heavily, and won't be as deep as the DMF. It has much more chunk to my ears. If you are looking for the closest of the 3 to an 81, it's going to be the Freidman. It's extremely dry, and very focused. If you want something bigger / with more frequencies present you want the DMF or Rev set. Hope that helps.

    • @RodneyMcG
      @RodneyMcG  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There's a lot of variables in between those 2 guitars, but I would basically look at it in do you want more of an active tight sound like the Friedman, or a more open passive feeling one which would be the rev. Good luck, hope it works out.

    I have a ser of Marty Friedman pickups in a Gibson flying V, and a set of the DMF in a Gibson SG. I really like both, and find them highly usable for most of my playing. That said, I like the Friedman pickups for more solo and harmonic tones. I like the DMF for those dirty riffs, and 70's style metal. If I could only have 1 set I would probably go with the DMF, but I would place the Friedmans a very close 2nd. Just my opinion

    What PAF would you recommend for modern metal with deep crunch for rhythm low drop tuning. I'm looking into using my schecter diamond series as my drop tune studio guitar specifically for rhythm and having trouble choosing a PAF pickup that will give me the modern low end crunch I'm looking for. Any recommendations be greatly appreciated

    • @RodneyMcG
      @RodneyMcG  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmmm. I don't know if I would necessarily go for PAF on something seriously dropped. Most will have a thick center mid focus that might cloud up an already difficult sound to manage. If you're not opposed to actives, I would look at the X series EMGs. They have more headroom and clarity than the regular series. A 85x has an alnico magnet, so it will be closer to a PAF style, but with the benefits of mild compression and upper mid cut to help keep a low tuning clear.

      Sure. Not likely. You can usually fit a 9v in the control cavity. Just give it a little cushion if it's right on top of a pot, etc. You can test it ahead of time by just opening it as it is now, and see if you can get a battery to fit with the current wiring.

      It's got some serious chunk

      @@RodneyMcG That's what I like to hear from the bridge pickup. In 2 humbucker guitars I find the bridge pickup involuntarily sacrifices a lot of low end but that one not so much. And it can be wired for coil splitting. Speaking of, it'd be interesting to hear how both pickups from that set react to coil splitting

      I agree on the low end issue. The DMF is solid there, without being messy. I definitely need to get these split and nerd out on a new comparison.
