    Watch what happens when a trace comes loose while driving a team of ponies. We also show a novice driver on the reins for the first time, driving all four ponies in rubber bits to show they are responsive and will behave even with an inexperienced female driver. Their owner also takes the reins of his four-in-hand for the first time and talks about the training we have done. This four-in-hand are going on to compete in driving trials events.

    The loose trace was adroitly handled -- potential runaway nipped in the bud. And they looked so lovely moving in step. I do love your videos.

    I could watch these videos for hours ! Barry has such a sympathetic handling of the horses... Complete understanding and total confidence. I had my basic training with Sally Walrond...A great teacher and had much enjoyment driving singles and pairs of ponies. Too old and ricketty now but I get great enjoyment watching these videos. Thank you.

    The wheelers (chestnuts) are called Barney and Nemo - the liver chestnut leader is called Romeo.

    I hope they continue using your rubber bits. They are so in-sync with each other....beautiful trots. What type of shoes do you use...here in the US we have non skid shoes, mostly for mounted patrol. You are an amazing horseman. Love your work....Debs from Texas

    *That's* why you need discipline; so that when something goes awry (and, it will!) the situation doesn't go from bad to worse.

    I know u cant pass on natural instinct but i'd would love to read your biography if you wrote one. Just your thoughts and experiences would make a brilliant book! A TV show would be amazing too.

    the near side leader, the bay seems to have his head cranked into the other horse so is bent all the while.can you explain why this is please?

    • @barryhook2
      @barryhook2  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Sonja Gaffer In this case the bay wasn't originally trained by us, and lacked a bit of confidence. When put up alongside a "new" horse such as the chestnut, he is looking to the other horse for reassurance or to try and "see who it is" (they will sometimes do this as a pair too). This is usually either in the form of turning their head towards the other horse, and/or bringing their quarters away from the other horse (which in turn places their head slightly towards the inside). Notice how the chestnut leader is confident enough in himself to go straight without being concerned by the bay next to him. If you look at the reins, the bay's inside rein is loose, so he is putting his head over towards the other horse - it is not being held there. However a similar thing can happen when the paces are different between each horse; the bay is a bit more "uptight" and going on a bit faster than the chestnut, which in turn means he is "taking up the slack" of the reins and therefore trying to go on, but can only go forwards as far as the reins allow. He then turns his head to try and continue going forwards at the faster pace (but although this allows his body to go forwards it means his head is placed to the side). Other films show him going a lot straighter; the change of bits from rubber to metal may also have had an impact (we would have kept him in the softer bit). More on this topic of turning heads to the side is explained on the film of the hard-mouthed grey pony pair (Ronnie and Reggie). Hope that helps!

      +barryhook2 yes i understand this but there is no slack in that rein if he wanted to straighten up he couldnt anyway, i see no loose rein but will watch again.

      +barryhook2 I have watched so many of your videos, and totally agree with you. I just have to ask in this case, would it beneficial for this horse to be driven as a pair to build up his confidence? I have only driven single horses, and have found that when a horse becomes fearful going back a step for a week really helps build their trust and confidence.

    I am in New Zealand and we have carriage horses , clydesdales etc. Over here, apart from the reins, we also have a lead between each horse. This is because there is the risk of the horses turning their heads away from the other horse and getting loose. They are of course attached to the pole etc, but why are they not tied together in your videos? It stops the horses throwing their head out to the side away from the horse beside them and see this a lot in the videos.
