    Like you, I was looking forward to upgrading my R5 to R5ii. But after finally learning the details on the improvements, and as a hobbyist wildlife stills shooter, I can't justify the expense. I'll wait for the R7 mark ii - it could be a better fit.

    I was on the fence but you had me at the $5k package price. My R5 is still doing the job VERY WELL. I am leaning towards waiting for the real world experiences ( I didn't last time. SMH) or R5 MarkIII. Every other cycle is fine for me.

      sounds like I'm in the same boat as you. I really wanted to be more excited for the MKii - the only thing I'd like is the new hotshoe, as I'm getting close to needing to replace my flashes. I really wish they'd release lower price photography-only camera. I've never used the video features

      @@joepatbob I forgot about the newer Hot shoe. I am an Event photographer for the most part, so if I buy now, it would be the R6MkII for the low light, and new hot shoe. Regarding switching video to camera mode. You can set that tiny function button by the shutter release button to do that and it’s actually much more efficient than having to switch where the power switch is on the R5

    I'm looking to finally upgrade my 7D Mark II and go mirrorless. I will be using it mostly for travel photography and some wildlife with an eye towards selling the prints.
    Which do you think would better suit those needs? The 5 or 5 mark 2. Either would be a massive leap forward, so we aren't talking about incrimental changes. I just want to leap to the best for my needs.

      The autofocus on the R7 is good, but the image quality of the R5 combined with its tremendous autofocus make it way, way better. Even though I’ve never used the R5II, I can tell you that it’s focusing and image will be better than the crop sensor R7.

    As a Sony user, I upgraded to the A7Rv (from the iv) thinking i needed the "AI" focus improvements. Having used the camera for a few months, the improvements are situational and can sometimes be more of a hassle to work with. It feels more like i'm playing a video game getting the AI to have the boxes on the right people ....and less "photography".

      And for a lot of people there are a lot of reasons.
      1. The eye autofocus and registering up to 10 subjects.
      2. The 45mp stacked sensor improving performance by at least 20% in all modes.
      3. In camera upscaling 45mp to 180mp. That's a game changer for printing.
      4. The ability to change/select FPS in continuos shooting
      5. In camera RAW file noise reduction
      6. The ability to frame grab an 8k still while simultaneously recording video, by pressing the shutter
      7. The accelerator chip
      And there are most likely loads more. These alone are not in my R5, and most likely will never come because of the hardware restrictions, sensor, processor and accelerator chip.

    I agree with you 100% that the price to upgrade from the R5 mark I to the R5 mark II is significant. However, my situation is different. I shoot for fun and I’m upgrading from a 14 year old Canon 5D mark II. I was going to get the original R5 but when I saw the significant improvements on the Mark II, especially the auto focus, I want the mark II. Also I don’t do much video, so for me the difference to get the mark II is about $1600 - camera plus new extra batteries plus an RF to EF lens adapter. Yes, that’s still a lot of extra money, but I’m old and this will be the last camera I ever purchase. So this future proofs it for me. If I already owned an R5 and mainly shot stills I don’t think I would upgrade.

  • @johnwelchphotography
    @johnwelchphotography 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Hi Matthew, I had the same plan for today and took the same course of action when I saw all the details. You have some good points here, and its important for people to realize the true cost of getting this camera with the new battery, grip, and likely expensive cards needed to upgrade. I was probably chomping at the bit to get the r5 mark II even more since my current setup is R7 and 5d Mark IV so this would become the full frame. My problem with Canon's current lens/ camera combo is that to get to at least 600mm without having a really slow F stop would cost a fortune. That 200 -800 just seems to slow at F9 at the top end of the focal distance. I shoot too many small birds in low light. So I will give things more thought now. Might even be a good time to snap up a deal on the original R5. Also, the Nikon Z8 is now $3500 new and the 180-600 at f 6.3 and $1700 as a set up and sell all the canon gear becomes quite tempting...

    • @matthewgehly
      @matthewgehly  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The more that I think about it, the more frustrated I get that Canon is making us purchase an attachment and newer batteries to solve their heat issue. The cost of the body would be fine if the accessories weren't an absolute necessity. I have too much invested in Canon gear to make a switch and the other manufacturers certainly have misses as well. Nikon only recently caught up to everyone else. I love the original R5 and will continue to shoot with it for now. Maybe you could pick one up at a great price now?

    • @DreamReleases
      @DreamReleases 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No more cards than you're gonna need at the moment. Nobody who already has an R5 and shoots video needs to go out and purchase new cards unless they are not doing their research properly. The manual hasn't even been released yet. Are you doing paid gigs? If you are not using a 600m daily or regulary, it's huge, you can rent any lens you need. In this day and age there is absolutely no need to purchase high end photo gear unless you live in some remote region. Heck one can rent and order long lenses delivered to the heart of the Amazon

    Thank you. I did put in my pre-order, as just a stills shooter, but I knew from the supplier I bought from it gave mew a few weeks to think it through and cancel if I needed to. My plan was to get it and let my R5 become my backup RF body. I don’t need the grip with a fan since I’m not planning on doing video but I probably would buy the grip eventually like I’ve had on all my previous DSLR, Film, and Mirrorless bodies but admit I’m going to have a to take a much deeper look at which features require the new P version of the battery since I already own at least half a dozen H batteries. We need a list of features vs. battery type. I do have other stacked 50 Mpixel bodies so maybe I should wait as well. Take care.

    Good and unbiased video instead of the paid cheerleading on other channels ;-) - thank you ! The upgrade price is the real stopper for me. If you don't earn your living with photography and need to trade in or sell your trusty R5 + BG R-10 R5 + one additional battery on the used market to mitigate the costs, you currently have to add € 3000 for the corresponding set of the R5II - here in Europe, at least. That's out of proportion. IMO., given that the gain of the R5 II compared to the already excellent R5 seems to be relatively small for nature and wildlife shooters like me - and the R5 has never let me down. The R5 II has inherited some sports-oriented features from the R1 such as ball sports and registration of persons/faces that are useless for nature photographers. Generally it seems that sports and event photographers are the main audience for Canon nowadays. For that clientel the R5 II may offer some more benefits over the R5 - if they can/want to pay the price.

      I appreciate your insight! It's definitely a tough decision for many photographers, especially when it comes to balancing features and price. Like you, I love my R5 and I'm happy to continue to shoot with it. I really do like a lot of the features of the Mark II and I'll most likely grab one when the price comes down. I use an R7 as a backup. I'm kind of thinking of getting rid of it and getting a second R5 Mark I. I've always preferred the R5 over the R7 and my R5 (I got one from the very first shipment) is starting to show some signs of wear and tear. :)

      @@matthewgehly Thank you, Matthew ! I doubt that the price of the R5 II will come down in the foreseeable future while the value of the R5 might decrease further in the next months. Many people are already looking for a bargain here. So I tend to keep my R5 or hold off for now, at least. I'd also appreciate some of the new features of the R5 II. But the huge difference in price which you cannot proportionally mitigate anymore by selling the R5 doesn't justify the switch for me - at least not now. Keeping the R5 instead of dumping it for a bargain and adding the R5 II might even be a better decision if you can afford it. But I have the R3 and R7, too. So an additional body doesn't make sense for me. As for the R7, that I had bought last year prior to my second trip to Tanzania, I found the 33MP crop sensor in combination with the 100-500 a very flexible and good set up for birds while I had used the R5 and R3 with the heavier 600mm/200-400mm for other animals. Of course, the R7 isn't quite in the same league for AF but I had no major issues. Rolling shutter wasn't a big problem because I had used EFCS most of the time. Cheers Wolfgang

I like 8K-RAW 60fps (what is the main shooting mode with my R5C, I dont shoot a lot so there is no problem with the big files). What I miss in my R5C is no Animal-AF in the video mode, no IBIS, no CLOG-2. I will get all this with the R5MKII, but because the just 18Min shooting in 8K-RAW 60fps, makes me to maybe quit my preorder. Shooting birds and then knowing that after 18min maybe I'll have to lower the video quality is not what I want. I'll wait for some overheating reviews in the next weeks, and then I'll decide if I will quit my preorder. The delyvery day from my order should be 30 august, so there is still time to quit the order.

    I upgraded from my R5 two years ago > to the R7 :) lol Great decision ! Never looked back :) For all its weaknesses, and their are many, the R7 is absolutely a better choice for my shooting needs (reach).
    I was hoping that the R5 Mk II would have a much faster readout speed though, as this is the kind of thing I'd like to see roll down to the R7 Mk II. So at least that factor is not looking good. But I guess if the other 13 weaknesses of the R7 are improved, it might still be worth it :) I love / hate my darn R7's :) lol
    Oh but hey, one thing about the original R5 that killed me, and I'm assuming it's been fixed (although I haven't heard it mentioned) was that it had no option to add sound to the Electronic Shutter mode ! Which for me, was such a deal breaker, that I ended up having to shoot in "loud, slapping, Mechanical Shutter mode", the entire time I owned it. That was lame. At the time, I would have paid an extra $400 just for that one feature ! Instead I got it in my R7's for no extra charge :)

      You can get very good hybrid mirrorless cameras for both photography and videography for less than $4k… and in some cases those cameras can perform just as good, if not better than some of these higher end mirrorless cameras.

    I understand your decision but I went the direction. Maybe I will change my mind later but only time will tell.
    I know for many photographers that "global" shutter in the Holy Grail but I can't help but think back to my college days when we learned that parallel would always be faster than serial and would never be replaced by serial. We all know how that turned out. Parallel doesn't scale well and serial, USB, became fast enough that parallel wasn't worth the extra circuitry, cost, airflow issues, etc... (the cables were wide and restricted airflow). For a 45MP sensor you can have 13,656 gates to read the pixels or 45,000,000 gates to read the sensor. The affordable option that can easily be designed for is to improve the read speeds to the point that rolling shutter isn't an issue. I could be wrong about where this is going but the number of gates needed and increased circuitry, heat, and power usage are just plain reality.
    I am buying one extra battery since the features that require the new battery aren't functions I think I will use often. I will still carry 2 of the older batteries when I go out. I did also pre-order the standard grip but that is just to fit my hand better. I don't need to buy a new CF Express B card since I have 2 already and will be selling my current R5. I live in the Pacific Northwest and have never had my R5 overheat so I am not concerned about the MKII overheating.
    For me, as a hobbyist it certainly isn't needed but it will make me happy and I can afford it.
