This song writing and their voices are really the only country band that ever pulled on my heart strings. She sings with remarkable clarity, and the instrumentation is always excellent. Dixie Chicks win.
yes it was an amazing album then it really as far as strait country or rock you with so many different things when you look at taking the long way this song written with Natalie and Linda Perry of 4 non blondes.. there's a great one with Kev bow that finishes the album.. and if you remember the alt-rock song closing time from the band semisonic all over this album in production along with Natalie's father Lloyd maines is Dan Wilson his voice is heard on almost every cut which is fantastic he really made this album into what it was. another reason I still love this one 12 years later it's just fantastic.
This is probably one of my personal favorites. Rick Rubin produced a real monster with this release. The writing is rock solid, well played, great hooks etc. I still play this disc all the time!! Great job Ladies!
+BostonBeanEater I am such a fan of this song because of that lap steel on it! I read somewhere, that apparently they had to do multiple takes of this song during the filming as Emily kept messing up the end. Thats why at the end of this one she threw her head back and smiled! She did it, this time! God! I love her! I miss them! :)
Natalie Maines is spectacular in her beauty during this song. All three women are special here. This must have come from their time of trouble after being truthful about "things".They created a beautiful and great great song.I am in Awe.I love them all. Creating something this beautiful gives an instant place to big table in the sky
One of my favorite songs. Occasionally they come up with a nice phrase, and "every time I'm feeling down, I wonder what would it be like with you around" qualifies. A beautiful song well sung, and the dude on the drums back there is really digging in!
I love how Marty starts off singing high but then gradually ends up singing the low part. Natalie starts in the middle and ends high and Emily starts low and ends in the middle. That was very creative vocal arranging!
Her voice, most notably in this song, is mesmerizing! Rolling Stone said it best..."If you've dismissed the Chicks or need a new reason to love them, the epic, howling longing of "Voice Inside My Head" will blow your expectations."
I love the "Chicks"! How many of those sad Bush-league followers feel the same way now? I've never given up on you beautiful women! And that voice and those musical talents! WOW! I LOVE YOU CHICKS!
So much better than the album studio version, which is dead in comparison. Her vocals really come to life and the musicians are on form, especially Emily, that gorgeous, gorgeous creation.
U know, in Argentina country music isn't very popular because is an USA music style; but I have to admit these young girls have pure talent. Congratulations for them!
A Podunk bar after a show at the state fair in Albuquerque. I never forgot you Natalie. I promised you I wouldn't follow you. It crushed me seeing you cry. I hope Michael was good to you.
I know you'll probably never see this but once I heard this song it's never left my head. I wanted to let you know you help me through my worst times now. What choice did you have at 19?
This song has existential underpinnings. Everyone makes choices and then second guesses them. It’s part of our human condition - you can’t go in all directions at once. Maybe in other worlds we make all the choices and live them out but that is for mystics above my pay grade to contemplate.
hey GaPchGal i know exactly what you mean. I listened to this song over and over again enlessly. Still my favorite song. They perfomed this song for was it james taylor idk its in youtube under SHOWER THE PEOPLE gave me the same feeling. awesome music!!!!
If a singer adopts the tongue on the base of the mouth technique then they will free up the mouth to allow more sound out.For a singer with a small mouth this can be a huge advantage I guess to get power out.Singers with wide mouths have no need for this technique.
It is a big deal to the real music fan.Nancy Griffith was out years before these girls in Texas and it might be prudent to check her out and see where these chicks get their influence from !!!!
@truck2cmfd that's not right because they were playin' it in live performance, that's not playback. You ain't right, GO DIXIE CHICKS!!!! THIS IS COUNTRY!!!!!
so ur saying natalie's mouth is small thats why she does the tongue on bass of mouth thing? i thought her mouth looks pretty big just sayin.... also if thats the only reason they do it why are you making it sound like such a bad thing?
Tremendous! Nat can just flat out sing, don't you all think? Ridiculous post about the tongue thing below. She is always on pitch and sings just beautifully. I'm thinking Irishguy is not a musician.
@SingJiya It was an opinion. It's what the whole idea of "freedom of speech" is about. Actually that miscue led to their biggest (and most meaningful album). You need to let go.
Natalie Maines is UNREAL I swear. She makes you feel intense passion and complete peace in one song!! How!!??
This should have been released as a single
they would have had to a chop that cuz I'm the album that clocks in at almost 6 minutes might have lost some of the cool stuff though unfortunately

That bridge harmony is beautiful!💯❤️
God, I fucking love that lap steel. Slays me. Utterly and blissfully slays me.

Natalie's dad wrote the slide guitar part. Emily performs it very well here.
The best female group ever
dang that girl can Sing... Miss them!

The harmonies about 3 minutes into the song bring joy to my heart.
I love how Marty starts off singing high but then gradually ends up singing the low part. Natalie starts in the middle and ends high and Emily starts low and ends in the middle. That was very creative vocal arranging!
Couldn't agree more, Kent.
As an adopted child, this song really gets to me. Nicely done Martie, Emily and Natalie.
all 3 are angels that come down to us to give all a taste of music of meaning !!!!!
Written with Linda Perry. The songwriting goddess
Didn’t know that. Amazing song.
I can hear her voice inside my head... it gets stuck there after hearing these great songs. She is beautiful
pure harmonious perfection, jus sayin...
Her voice, most notably in this song, is mesmerizing! Rolling Stone said it best..."If you've dismissed the Chicks or need a new reason to love them, the epic, howling longing of "Voice Inside My Head" will blow your expectations."
Awesome! Every performance. Awesome!!!
They just so beautifully slay.
Wow! This is amazing. They all sound brilliant.
I love the "Chicks"! How many of those sad Bush-league followers feel the same way now? I've never given up on you beautiful women! And that voice and those musical talents! WOW! I LOVE YOU CHICKS!
What great talents! Marvellous.
Harmonies 😩😍
I loved this cd so much! I think I was able to find a live performance of every song except "Baby hold on"
No matter why or who or what was said i will always love there music
their

such a big voice from Natile :) doesny fit that little person
Great job! ❤ I am very proud of you singing! With Emma and adde!❤
Phenomenon most of all. Wonderful DCX all time.
"or am I better off alone?" at 1:10, kills me every time. Their best vocal performance.
Always be an Amazing Song x
That drummer keeps PERFECT time, a lesson some pyromaniac drummers should learn!
TOTALLY AGREE. Guitar player that thinks that drummer is damn smart and snappy.
The drummer is the Legendary Fred Altringham. (Look him up). He also plays with Sheryl Crow and is a much in demand session drummer.
I met Fred Eltringham outside the hotel in Winnipeg. We had a nice chat about the Chicks.
this is a great tune. Never heard it before
I always love seeing Fred on the drums. We saw him play with Court Yard Hounds at Union Chapel in London two nights in a row.
Brilliant
sublime ,no comment
Harmonies 🙌
I think Emily got lost at the end. See Natalie’s reaction & then Emily having a laugh at the end. Love this band just brilliant.
I love it. The lyrics are awesome and this performance is perfect.
Man I've always loved this song.
Amazing!
U know, in Argentina country music isn't very popular because is an USA music style; but I have to admit these young girls have pure talent. Congratulations for them!
These chicks are very talented.
love it, the women knocked out hard here!
Yes, an exceptionally fine production of an very moving, most excellent, performance.
VERY GOOD!!!!!
awsome!!
Amazing
Still here and loving it on 7-26-19
the voices these girls do are the shit!
This song has existential underpinnings. Everyone makes choices and then second guesses them. It’s part of our human condition - you can’t go in all directions at once. Maybe in other worlds we make all the choices and live them out but that is for mystics above my pay grade to contemplate.

une des plus belle, au niveau de la voie c'est sublime.
THE BEST!!!
i need them back
@pendersandroy
Her voice is so powerful and tells this story with such passion.
I wish they would give the real story behind this song though
WHAT A VOICE.
Awesome!! :)
@pendersandroy Natalie is an angel
Wish I could clone that drummer! #awesome
yeh its soo gud!
And they were vilified for expressing their views in a country where supposedly they have the right to do so.
Nice.... Just listenin to some good tunes. I really dont care what the chick said, music is, well, music. Sounds nice.
Love this shit soo touching
This is a comment from my 9 year old daughter Simran about this song "i really like music that the dixie chicks make they are really cool"
❤💙💜
Thanks, but not all of them are on youtube. and i can't watch videos on the AOL site, because i'm from another country ;-)
The actual fact is Irishguy knows what he is talking about and if one is observant then it is easy to see and hear what the lead singer is doing.
where are the ther songs they played on AOL SESSIONS? i thought there were more :)
@truck2cmfd because they were singin' it in acoustic
It's just completely effortless! What is Emily playing here?
dont worry, she will come back
At the 5:10,11,12 mark, is she beautiful.
If a singer adopts the tongue on the base of the mouth technique then they will free up the mouth to allow more sound out.For a singer with a small mouth this can be a huge advantage I guess to get power out.Singers with wide mouths have no need for this technique.
Did they do this on an album?
@Phayr How in the world did you know that?
I really was wondering that. Looks like a Pedal steel Guitar, but I don't see a pedal.
What would life be like with you around?
@Phayr What interview?
Peterdaniel66 Firstly with this technique there are times when tongue movement is inevitable. Secondly I am a fan of Nancy Griffith!!!!
are there any other songs sort of like this lyrically and melodically by either Dixie Chicks or any other artist? preferably country?
Check out Sheryl Crow
It is a big deal to the real music fan.Nancy Griffith was out years before these girls in Texas and it might be prudent to check her out and see where these chicks get their influence from !!!!
Ah go eat a potato, you self-absorbed Douchebag.
@truck2cmfd that's not right because they were playin' it in live performance, that's not playback. You ain't right, GO DIXIE CHICKS!!!!
THIS IS COUNTRY!!!!!
that drummer is way cool.
wish they would
@Artajerjes2010 Agreed!!!
to my ex whom i still love for giving me two of the most beautiful girls in the world
so ur saying natalie's mouth is small thats why she does the tongue on bass of mouth thing? i thought her mouth looks pretty big just sayin.... also if thats the only reason they do it why are you making it sound like such a bad thing?

that voice is part scalpel , part bulldozer
Does it look like Natalie is crying at around the 5:10 mark? It's kind of hard to tell and all with such a crappy video quality.
Yeah the Dude is cool.....
@SingJiya It was an opinion. It's what the whole idea of "freedom of speech" is about. Actually that miscue led to their biggest (and most meaningful album). You need to let go.
I can hear Linda Perry.
She wrote it
@spongebobgirlfriend
a 6-string lap steel guitar
