So I've always taken an "if it ain't broke don't fix it" approach to ROM updates, and as a result, I'm still running a January build. Tempted to update at this point but terrified that this process won't be as reliable when skipping 7 months worth of releases, and I really can't be bothered clean flashing... You reckon it'd still be safe or should I continue to hold off?
you should ask your particular device's ROM maintainer about this, he will give you the best advice!

Depends on how old the firmware is which you're using already. If it's not compatible with new rom builds then it'll show Error 7. So it's better to flash newer firmware first then flash latest build and fcrypt if needed.

If I used custom kernel as a daily I would have made one. I don't use a custom kernel personally so I am unable to recommend one or show how to do it cause it might break something

Bro, i need help. I'm using redmi note 5pro and i installed evolution x in October 2020 and today i got an update notification so i updated my device and my phone got restarted but now my phone got locked. I tried entering my password several time.
Note: i did not remove the device passwords and face lock and all while updating. How can i unlock my device now??

I did and it works fine as long as you are on latest vendor and firmware just keep them updated before using Default System Updater.

I never flashed vendor while dirty flashing. Is it required??
No. But if there's a new update on the firmware side and if you don't flash latest firmware, you'll get error 7 that's why it's recommended. But not needed all the time. It depends on when the update is coming.
