    Brilliant, thanks so much for the review! I've tried Brooks, Vibram five fingers and Luna trail running sandals in the last few years. Honestly I love the minimal, natural zero drop feel from my Vibrams and Lunas but sometimes I feel like I just need a bit more cushioning - but not as much as normal running shoes. The Brooks had so much cushion they were bouncy and there was just no feel. So much cushion it was like I was on a cloud. But these Altras seem like they'd be perfect.. I've narrowed my search to these racers or one of their trail shoes, probably the Lone Peaks. I sometimes run on pavement but prefer trails, I just can't always get to trails easily, but who knows, I may get these and trail shoes. Honestly I'd love to run in my Lunas all the time one day, it just feels like I need to alternate between them and shoes for a while till I'm stronger. Thanks again..

    Great review, kev. One of the few Altras I've never tried, but have always wanted to. I just don't run that much to warrant even more shoes (I currently have 7 active pairs 🤣 and am reaching 2,400km/ 1,500miles in 2021) it's a shame if the Racer really does get discontinued. But as long as Altra keep the "lasts", it should be easy to reintroduce the model in the future. Many people will miss it.

    I realize this is an older video, but I'm sure people are still referencing it. I have just hit about 290 miles on my pair and they are cooked. The midsole has gotten very soft and I worry the fact that your foot can loam around isn't good and can cause injury. I was pretty sore after my last run in them, not in a good foot-strengthening sort of way. When the midsole breaks down, it's probably not a great idea to keep running in them just because they still look decent.
    I have migrated over the Torins, which I'm liking quite a bit. However, I'll likely get another pair of the Racers, or maybe the new Escalantes, as I like to have more than one pair going at a time, and do prefer the thinner sole for shorter runs. Thanks for putting this out there!

    • @KevinHoegler
      @KevinHoegler  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment! I agree, at that point seems that the shoe was cooked. I have been running in the escalante 3 and really like it. Going between a pair or racers and escalante 3s can be a great rotation. I don’t like the torins a ton anymore. I feel like there’s so many sizing issues with them from model to model.

    Escalante Racer is awesome. It’s my only road shoe. I have 5 pairs I rotate through…2 pairs in black, 1 pair in grey, Boston 2019 and the Alohas. I wear 9.5 and no socks with the racer. The best road shoes ever. Rumor going around that they are being discontinued but Altra told me it’s not true. The current black pair that you’re holding seems to have no availability anymore. Assuming you do not run heel to toe, you land on your mid-foot?
    I've been running in Vibram Five Fingers, trying to transition to fully barefoot running, for about a year. I can wear them on trail runs for as long as I want, but for road runs, 4 miles +, my arches start to hurt to the point that I have to stop running at about mile 4. So, I'm looking for something like this to run on road until my feet are built up enough to run fully on VFFs on road for longer distances. Thinking this might be the best choice.

  • @shillens1

    Is the fit the same as regular Escalante? I fit nicely in a 9.5 with that knit upper but my outside toes felt jammed during a 5 mile run. A size 10 felt like it had too much length (like a thumb and a half) and extra material in the toe box, but I didn’t run in them. You recommend a half size up?

    • @KevinHoegler
      @KevinHoegler  ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe it fits like a 9.5 but a little bigger with the way the upper is. I usually wear a 9.5 because I have a longer second toe. This allows me enough space to run fine in them. I found the escalante racer for really well with plenty of room

    I just found this video in my research on which Altra to purchase next. I currently run in the rivera and while I like them, I've recently developed a few issues with them. After a little less than 200 miles, they've started to give me a blister on my left arch. The other issue I have with them is that they fit very big for the size they are. Before purchasing them, I did a bunch of research and a bunch of reviews said some people might want to size up a half size. I purchased true to my normal size that I wear in everything, including other altras. When they were brand new, they were a tiny bit long, but nothing crazy (In reality, I could've sized down probably at least a full size) so I decided to just go with it. They have "become" really big feeling on my feet. I'm wondering if this is what's causing the blister issue.
    I'm trying to figure out what shoe to buy next. How do the rivera's and escalante racer compare to each other? For me, the rivera's are too soft for what I wanted them to be. I really wanted a zero drop, foot shaped kinvara-like shoe. The rivera's are too soft for my liking. This becomes very noticeable on longer efforts, especially without any sort of "pop" to help with the soft midsole. Thanks in advance for any insight.

    • @KevinHoegler
      @KevinHoegler  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the detailed question! I’ll be honest i thought the Rivera was very tight when I tried it and honestly because of that didn’t use them. If the Rivera is a little big, I’m not sure the escalante racer will be for you. I feel as if it is pretty wide in the toe box and it offers a lot of space. I think all around it is a shoe that has a lot of room. I’m not sure how minimal you want, but maybe like inov-8s zero drop shoe will work for you. The racer definitely does have some pop and isn’t soft. It’s more firm with additional ground feel. Hope this helps!

    • @robertmorano2372
      @robertmorano2372 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KevinHoegler hey, thanks for the reply! I think I fixed the issue with the Rivera for me. I removed the insole all together. On longer runs, where the insole meets the shoe was rubbing causing the blister, if that makes sense. It's not a toebox issue for me. I wear wide barefoot shoes as my casual shoes and work shoes (not the 5 finger ones) (I cook for a living, so on my feet all day) It's almost like the Rivera's I received were a size 12 labeled as a size 11 (which is what I wear. I contacted Altra and they said they have not heard of the issue of being too long. Only complaints about it running small.
      Either way, I think I'm going to be able to get a bunch more miles out of my riveras (without the insole) and I'm currently staring at the escalante racer in my cart😁.

    does it have high volumen on arch area? i don't have wide feet but i do have very high arches. i'm running for a bit less than 5yrs now and i'm yet to find a shoe that won't make my feet numb after 2hrs. getting a bigger size shoe would just make my feet swim around the shoe. i've tried all the lacing technique out there without success. i've ran 4 marathons but couldn't run it to my potential because i had to rest and wait for numbness to subside before continuing the run.
    zero drop is no issue as i could run 12km completely barefoot and half of my mileage is with vibram five fingers and half with high cushioned regular shoes

    • @KevinHoegler
      @KevinHoegler  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not 110% sure about the arch support. The shoe is wide in the forefoot, but definitely a happy medium from barefoot shoes and max cushion. Besides the wide toe box, I think it does fit securely.

    My Escalante 2.5 after 30 miles: Cushion gone. Energy return also gone. Probably defective since I never had that problem with the originals or 1.2. Use them now to "run" errands around town. After running in the Sketchers Razor 3 same as the 3+, I'm over the failures of the Escalante since its better in everyway. The Razor 3 with its responsive long lasting nitro infused midsole, 2 oz. lighter, cheaper, flexable and has a 4mm drop which I promise you won't feel the difference compared to 0 drop. The same can also be said about the nitro infused Puma Liberate but it has a 10 mm drop but feels just as natural as the 0 drop Escalante. Does not impact my forefoot strike in anyway. If the wide toebox is the difference maker then just wear Injinji toe socks for splay and for me it feels almost the same but with the lesser toebox a more efficient toe off than Altra.

    • @KevinHoegler
      @KevinHoegler  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question, I think it comes down to how much cushion you’d want. If you like a little bit lower of stack height and more ground feel, the escalante racer gives you that. If you want some more cushion, the torin is probably the better option. It comes down to your preference
