Yeah, Charles Wesley died in 1788, just before the US Constitution was ratified, so he wasn't adding stanzas as the Germans were invading Poland in 1939.

FYI the RC church adopted a lot of Protestant hymns after Vat II precisely because the theology is the same in them and the tunes are so much better. Nice to see Catholics singing! in 1995 attended Corpus Christi Mass in Munich Cathedral - the Catholic congregation sang its heart out - Germans, Catholics or Lutheran love to sing!

This tune is definitely from the Baroque period of Hymnody along with Judas Maccabeus, Mendelssohn, Nun Danket, Adeste Fiddles, and others.
