Those nukes never belonged to Ukraine. They belonged to the Soviet Union. After the collapse of the ussr the Russian federation took the nukes out of Ukraine.
No, the Russian federation did not take the nukes out of Ukraine. Ukraine was pressured to hand over the nukes by the signatories of the Budapest memorandum, in exchange for security guarantees. Furthermore, those nukes were developed and built in Ukraine.
Yes they did as part of an agreement to dismantle them. Ukraine didn’t get its independence till 91. The nukes were in Ukraine at the behest of the Soviet Union as part of the Warsaw pact.
@@Szminsky One can say they were pressured, one could also say that without giving up those weapons, Russia wouldn't have allowed them to become a largely independent country. It is a bit of a dilemma, there is no question about it. But the way he pictures it, is disingenious in my eyes. He makes it look as if either Ukraine did as some sort of humanitary act or as a result of being pressured into it. Both is BS. Those weapons weren't Ukraines as Ukraine didn't exist when they were stationed there. The fact that they were built there doesn't really matter, those were weapons of the Soviet Union and Russia became its successor.
If you are correct it would mean that without those “russian bots” there would have been no commentators here. Well, almost no commentators. That does not sound right
I wonder why nobody challenges the notion that Budapest memorandum was somehow violated by Russia. The simple truth is that BM was meaningful as long as Ukraine maintained its neutral status. You don’t have to be a PhD to understand that the moment Ukraine decided to join NATO, the BM became meaningless. That is why the memorandum lived only 14 years, until 2008. I really expected Lex to ask that simple question.
To be fair, it is kind of his job. He has to do what is best for his country and involving more stakeholders on his side is nothing than benefitial to him. It is on the rest of the world now to not get dragged in there.
Did the Ukrainians ever actually have the ability to use their old soviet sites? Like the ability to even use nuclear weapons in the first place, they had the material to do it in theory
They had to give it up. It was an agreement upon dissolution of USSR between Russia and US that only Russia and USA keeps their nukes, but Ukraine. And now we are paying for it. Clearly invasion of Ukraine was planned during dissolution.
Ukraine wouldn’t exist if they didn’t give up nukes, leaving an opportunity for Russia to enter. This shit is a game played over 100 years, and Trump isn’t gonna magically stop it.
Yes, I think that NATO must fight to the last Ukrainian for the minerals, coal, oil and gas that Ukraine has. And as for reciprocity, after NATO makes its military bases in Ukraine, should Russia also put them in Cuba...
How will you be able to logistically sustain that base in Cuba? You can’t even Mai train your bases in Syria now. You guys can barely fight Ukraine right next store. Your troops in Cuba wouldn’t last a a day against the Americans lmao.
He has been bamboozled, and he doesn't even know it. That is exactly why it was the most important thing to secure dose weapons, keep it out of the hands of desperate people like he has be come....
@@Szminsky Well proper... He got an answer, the degree of autheticity is out there for everybody to look on their own. He also talked about his country being a front runner in terms of digitalisation - saying that an election isn't possible because there are so many people not in the country right now seems a little fishy. I am sure that it is way easier to not do the elections. More secure in terms of unwanted influence. More secure for people actually ahving to go to vote. But given what is at stake, it is a little too smooth to just postpone them into infinity. Because as he is the leader of the country, it is on him to say when this war is over and he also said that the election will be in the year the war ends.
@@mattdaniels6430 “because there are so many people not in the country right now” - This sentence was provided in a broader context, ONE element of the problem. And yes, I think it doesn’t require the sharpest tool in the shed to understand that holding elections while under a full scale invasion, is problematic. There are regions not under Ukrainian control… or do you suggest elections in the form of the Ruski referendums in Kherson, Zaporizhia, Luhansk and Donetsk?
@@Szminsky As I said, I can see many reasons not to do it. But I am sure there are just as many to at least give it a thought. Imagine the signal it would have to see the Ukrainian people vote for a president who stands for continuing the fight. But there is a good chance, that such a clear outcome isn't to be expected. Lets try to keep it neutral. No need to question somebodies general intelligence just because he comes to different conclusions than you do. You decide to believe the words you heard here. Thats fine. But those words don't become the truth just because you believe in them.
Misleading. They belonged to the soviet union, of which collapsed. That's like saying most of Russia belongs to Mongolia because it was initially inhabited by the Mongolian Empire. Should the US cede the territory that it stole from mexico? yada... yada. You can chase your tail with these historic arguments forever. The ICBMs (of which many key components were made in Ukraine) ceased to be property of the soviet union when the soviet union ceased to be. Just as the Ukraine, once occupied by the soviet union, ceased to be a territory of the soviet union, when the soviet union ceased to be.

He is totally right!
Great video Lex. Ukraine must be free
For real?
One of the best interviews
So many Russians trolls and bots here unfortunately
Could easily say ur NATO one
@@dpie4859 that’s not an argument
Good point
Please end war
Russia gives a damn about Ukraine.
What!? So that’s why they’re systematically destroying Ukraine?
Those nukes never belonged to Ukraine. They belonged to the Soviet Union. After the collapse of the ussr the Russian federation took the nukes out of Ukraine.
They never even had control of them. The launch codes were always in Moscow

@Szminsky Are you saying that Ukraine had complete control over those nukes, had the launch codes, and could have used them whenever they wanted?
This man can't be trusted. Period.
This is so dangerous, he’s essentially campaigning to get nuclear weapons. He doesn’t care about anyone but himself .
He cares about his country. He’s right to anything to protect his people from invaders.
His country was invaded. He must do everything to protect his people.
