perhaps - we do not know. They would have been sanctioned and in the time it took to figure out what to do with all the nukes a large power may have invaded to disarm them. We don't know what would have happened. You can't take guesses about how 30 years of history would have panned out if you fiddle with the dials.

The sad thing is that Ukraine did what the West (led by the US and UK) wanted and in return got security guarantees, the Budapest memorandum - because of our half hearted support now that Ukraine has been attacked, the only logic response from Ukraine and others is that they must get their own nuclear weapons.
Expect countries like Poland and Ukraine and other European countries to aim to get nuclear weapons in the future.

    • @MostIntelligentMan

it makes no sense for small country have nukes, like france or UK have nukes, but what they gonna do with them? a big country like china, usa or russia could fuck up half the france or uk while they would only max get tiny portion of big boy. • @Nauda999

That arsenal was about as much Ukraine's as the one America has in Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Italy and Turkey to the country it is in. Control of this arsenal was in Moscow.
Ukraine could have dismantled the rockets and sold the bombs to whoever is willing to pay, and that was what both USA and Russia feared.

The US's pathological fear of nuclear weapons led us all to this point. International treaties don't guarantee anything really. Nuclear weapons can guarantee mutual annihilation and can act as an effective deterrent. So fear of weapons always leads to proliferation of these feared weapons in direct way or indirect one. The conclusion - develop weapons, plan it's usage, never fear them. Weapon never kills - it's always someone using weapons kill.

Nuclear weapons require meticulous and expert maintenance, unlike cars from brands like Toyota or Mazda. It’s likely that Ukraine lacked the expertise needed to properly manage and maintain such weapons.

the Soviet nuclear weapons did not belong to the zsoviet republics, the same way the US weapons do not belong to the individual states. the same applies to the weapons production, they were manufactured to different plants in different Soviet republics.
