    There is a error in this video - the GCM of the Triton is 5885kg, and I describe is as 5585kg. You can calculate values for any GCM (including the Triton's correct value!) here -> l2sfbc.com/towing-weights-calculator/

    Good analysis. Towed a 3t van 40,000km around Oz with a BT-50 XT 3.2. Picked the base spec XT for better load capacity. It did the job but the next van will be

    This is a great summary. I'm sure there are innuances eg adding bull bar etc but I like the graphics and simplicity.

    Thanks for the video. To my mind a key thing that really matters is the ratio of actual mass of the loaded ute v the actual mass of the trailer. I have a Ssangyong Musso so that is not anywhere near the top 6 selling anyway. However I think your video is really helpful for any ute owner. Sadly the people who should watch it probably won't.

    Having owned different utes and currently owning a 200 series, v6 amarok, and 2 v8 grand Cherokee’s I can say that out of the utes the amarok is a clear winner due to powerful and responsive engine. Towing 3500kg and shifting weights around to get 300kg Tbm the amarok has more power delivery than you would ever need only dropping lower than 7th gear for a tall incline.

    A really great video
    It is just sad that Ute manufacturer con the buying public that towing capacity is the only 5hing that matters.
    Best off being very conservative and allow a bigger margin or buffer so decrease the ATM of the trailer and don't stick the huge bull bar on the front.
    Interesting that if you do tow 3500 kg with a Ranger you would be over the GVM with four adults 8n the car plus a toothbrush to share.

    The GCM,of the Triton is 5885kg, I have one and when you quoted 5585 I thought that sounded incorrect, so looked it up on the Mitzy site

      So I did - someone else commented. I have pinned a comment and edited the description. I see what happened, mixed up 5885 and 5585 :-( Sorry about that everyone.

    I have just come home from an Outback trip. Between Winton and Longreach, I saw two caravans being towed by midsize SUV which had crashed being cleared up. Both accidents had lost control and run off the road severely damaging the vehicle and caravan and there were wild brake marks on the road.

    One thing thats missed here is engine power....you can put the 3t trailer behind a 4cyl, but the amarok is going to handle it so much better....

    Enjoyed this Rob. Next time you do this I reckon RRP would be good to give a bang for buck factor. Also since doing it as the 4x4 versions which are most popular describing how and when each can use 4 paw power is critical IMO as their is a significant safety factor between AWD or RWD esppecially towing where the sometimes lighter tug can get pushed and pulled around by the trailer and as the lion's share of towing heavy trailers is on bitumen this really matters!
    Love your work.
    My comments are suggestions and not criticisms I trust you understand.
    Your diagrammatic presentations are awesome.

      @L2SFBC  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Wayne, I really appreciate your detailed comments and encouragement, and understand it's not a criticism - wouldn't actually bother me if it was, I do listen to feedback when it is substantiaed like yours.
      I may do 2WD vs 4WD version - I very much agree AWD is better onroad. However the 2WD versions can often tow more due to greater payload, they are cheaper, and more fuel efficient so there's advantages.

    • @waynehobbs5175
      @waynehobbs5175 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@L2SFBC it is appreciated that you read and respond. Yes RWD only in utes has advantages in payload and running costs but I reckon the resale equation negates the savings from my observations.
      Love your work mate!

    All this being said, the payload able to carry, how many people, bullbar, towbar ect. If payload allowed 400kg with gcm at Max, add say 3 x 80kg people bullbar at say 80kg, that's 320kg, then there's towbar ect. You can't really carry a esky with a few drinks.

    I think you made an error with the Triton. Just checked my MQ manual and GVM is 2900 kg, GCM is 5885 not 5585 kg. This means there is a 115 kg difference.

    • @lauriematicic2114
      @lauriematicic2114 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also noted this error and have been reading all comments before I made a comment. This makes the Triton shine even further than suggested on paper but in real life that long distance from rear diff to tow bar is a real killer as far as stability goes for towing.

    Surprised that the manual variant (hilux) can tow more. Usually automatic variants (i.e hilux 500Nm) have slightly more torque than their manual counterparts (i.e hilux 430Nm).

    I'm curious, these trucks seem more like the mid sized line of trucks in the US. Like Dodge Dakota, Nissan Frontier, Chevy Colorado? Maybe I'm misunderstanding the conversions? Is there a larger truck line available? Like a Ram, Titan or Silverado? I hope that makes sense! 🤔🇺🇸

    If I leave my wife and kids at home how heavy a trailer can I pull ? Just joking , this is very helpful stuff . However I can't see that Triton should be at the top when only towing 3100 kg against others towing 3500 kg . If the others dropped to towing 3100 they can take an extra 400 kg payload . That part makes no sense to me .
