Starting the Quadzilla

- This is my friend's 1989 lt500r that is cursed. I've never dealt with a machine that has had so many problems and bad luck. During the filming of this the kill switch quit working, then the next day the counter balance sheared the key on its drive gear.
Update: After we made this vid we found that we weren't starting it the correct way. Need to advance the starter a bit farther to really get a good kick going. After a few more hiccups and a little tuning the 'zilla has been running strong.
If you can start it, you can ride it! I do this prank all the time on my CR500 and my Zilla!
My Dad had one a few years ago. It was 87 if I'm not mistaken. He bought it used. It also, was a pain in the ass to start. He always had to have myself or some other young guy in the group start it. He sold it to a friend who took it down to a shop. There were some wires somewhere that were corroded. He had them replaced and it works like a charm he said. But, my father is much happier with his electric start Raptor 700.
i had a 85 kx500 when i was 13 and i could fire it up cold on the second kick with the choke on and full throttle everytime...man up dude.

Banshees and Zilla are both great bikes it's all up to the riders opinion best to two strokes bikes ever made
Not good in the woods. I'd take a 250r over both those. Especially the banshee
TECATE 4 is my favorite
Banshee is much easier to start and would be long gone lol
i remember hearing that from my cousins when i was little, if you can fire it up you can ride it
@xiiTurboClutchiix The stock gearing is a bit high for the type of riding around here, u can burn the clutch crawling over rocks or in tight trails. Once set up correctly though, I think it rides pretty nice. Throttle control is key, spinning the wheels in any gear just takes a jab of the throttle. That's nice to have the ability to slide the rear end at will, but you also have to watch it. It also has 4 stroke like torque down low, you can short shift like crazy and it just keeps pulling.
They do have problems, but when you maintain them well, that won't happen so much.

You're right, it technically should work, but I've never had much luck getting a reliable reading from 0- 1/4 chop, that helps starting. Have sleds that would read good during low throttle, but barely able to start, usually end up a little rich on the pilot or air screw to start easily.
The counter balance itself is on the mag side, it has a shaft that runs through the case. On the clutch side is where a gear connects to the shaft, where that key is. I think it sheared during a backfire.

Definately worth doing to this quad: New clutch, carb and engine cleaning, newer, longer swing arm, and newer, longer a-arms. Not only will the new swing and a-arms be longer, but they will cut off a shit ton of weight, seeing as this is a steel frame. Also gives it a modern look. Oh, and cutting the front fenders off makes it look even more like a champ.

Could have been the best quad ever built. . I have owned all he two-stroke racers, the 500 was king.. HOWEVER, they were all cursed. Was not built well.
Can you explain what you mean by that..? How were they cursed..?
its two strokes in general. most two strokes ate the same. this guy just happens to be trying to kick over a 500cc engine. its harder than lower cc's.

did not ban, suzuki decided it was not practical to make them anymore. We're lucky they made them for the 4 years they did.
They had problems from the factory but are ez fixes. Once they are done they are very reliable bikes. I have no problem duning all day on mine.
Yea, NEVER use starter fluid on a 2-stroke. Starter fluid is not oil based and you run the chance of seizing the piston.
If u tighten u r rear shock dampener, it would crank easier!!!!

The counter balance shaft has a woodruff key between its drive gear and the shaft.
This was pretty much the first time we rode the bike since I rebuilt it, I know the jetting wasn't perfect. Doing plug chops ain't going to do a whole lot for the idle circuit. I did bump up the pilot one size from stock.
Since this vid I figured out we weren't kicking it right anyways, wasn't going far enough past tdc to get a full kick in. Starts half decent now, will give the "priming" trick a try.

The counter balancer doesnt have a key to shear... Drive gear? you mean the flywheel woodruff key was sheared??
Fyi, Lt's dont like to start if their jetting is off. Do plug chops to determine if your jetting is correct.
Another thing. You're not priming the motor... kick the bike about 3 times through with the engine off (cold only). Roll the piston just over TDC and kick it from the top of the crank. If you're jetting is right along with everything else, it should start right up.

that is true. someone that is really big can start it up but what if it was the reads in the read cage. that could be another thing why they had to kick start it many times.
Sure a plug chop will work on the "idle circuit" The "idle circuit" uses the pilot jet. Up to 1/4 throttle.
I'm still not following you on the counter balancer woodruff key.... Are you sure your not talking about the flywheel? The counter balancer is the half mooned shaped thing just to the upper left of the flywheel.

I've yet to see someone kickstart my 400 cold in 2 to 3 kicks.

Its not cursed dude, its just an old bike. I had the same problem, fixed one thing and later on something else would fail. The best thing is to tear it all up and replace what needs to be replaced or should be...
I asure you these bikes are better than the new ones one up to their same level of being fresh.
do all quadzillas have this problem? or is it just this one and also does it ever kick the shit out of you?
yea but as soon as the big dude got on it he started it up first kick so everything is fine on the bike just the person kicking.and if it was the reeds your should have a dead spot in the powerband.
Hey, would someone with more experience with these quads tell me if $1500 for one of these with with cracked plastic is a good deal?
Plastic is available still but not always in yellow
If it runs they are worth more than that .
i have a lt80 i have alot of problems geting it started but once i do it runs good. i cleaned out the carb but it still hard to start
What u should do to it now is to cut the fenders a bit to where they bend at the top (both front and rear fenders) and then have an extended swing arm on it.

@jhardytnarvd Right it still is this bike was able to achieve speeds in access of 100+ I have passed cars on the interstate doing 85 and I had to of been doing 95 and it was still climbing and I gave them a five second head start and I'm tired of people saying that the raptor 700 and 525 outlaw is the fastest sure it may be in acceleration but when you hit 3rd gear the 500 blows them all out of the water same with the banshee. It still is the fastest atv ever made and if you find a stock four

My friends quadrille (lt 500) has been sitting in his barn for about 8 months, I pulled it out turned the chock on and it started in 2 kicks. Don't know what you did with yours but that is shitty.
Zilla's dont like to start when the jetting is off. If pilot is spot on they are ez to start.
Reminds me of the first time i tried to start my 86 CR500....

Really, because last I heard these were, and still are the fastest stock quads ever made. They are apparently illegal in some states because people were being killed on them because they have so much power and weigh very little. These still beat machines like the Raptor 700 as far as acceleration and top speed. You either have a heavily modified 250 or you have misidentified the quads you are able to beat.
You can't just kick it u have to prime it first then get it to TDC and it'll start easier

I have 2 87s, just won a county fair 300 foot drag race with em open class, one stock bore, one oversized, with dragpipe. stock head, stock cylinder, no porting. stock CARB. Shit on banshes, and the R crowd. 450s and 700s did even worse than the banshees. plus they sound like dog shit.

start these machines with motor bike boots with dirt bike desighn in mind,this will give you more kick power lees pain
