    "I wisely started with a map, and made the story fit (generally with meticulous care for distances). The other way about lands one in confusions and impossibilities, and in any case it is weary work to compose a map from a story - as I fear you have found." -Tolkien haha

    I loved Evan's point about his books being largely single POV and how many problems that inherently solves. It makes such a huge difference in regards to focus and pacing, and it's amazing how difficult it is to find a single POV fantasy book that isn't YA!

      I started First Law knowing that it's very character driven, with no major focus on the story - I thougth I give it a try but I didn't expected anything. It turned out that I LOVE it, it is now one of my favorite series and it has one of the best character (if not the best for me) I ever read. Somehow it is my cup of tea.. I don't know how that happened.

  • @ninnusridhar
    @ninnusridhar 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    The highlight of an abercrombie book and what I've learned is possible from him is successful destruction of a character. I used to think destruction of a character was wrong. But then along came Nicomo Cosca.
    Has an incredible character arc. Evolves and grows into one of my most favourite and best characters by the end of Best served cold. But his character in red country is just the natural progression of that man. And works soooo well

    • @artemislogic5252

    • @judahfade1003
      @judahfade1003 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For real, I loved him in Best Served Cold, and then hated him in Red Country. His conclusion was very satisfying.

    • @ninnusridhar
      @ninnusridhar 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@judahfade1003 and loving then Hating him is completely natural. Coz the very same attributes that made him a hero and made him lovable, make him a villain
      Coz its all those attributes taken to its extreme.
      He liked money, and gambling and drinking. That's nice. But the like evolves to obsession and becomes evil.
      If a character doesn't know their limits they become evil. And abercrombie is a genius at writing exactly that

      I don't care what anyone says, I rooted for the true hero of the two main trilogies, the payoff when he finally shows up to "save the day" near the end is just incredible. You have to give it to him, he might be a heartless bastard but maybe that's what it takes to beat the immortal immoral monopoly guy, and that he does, at least for a time.
