Agree with Jim Fariello's comment below. This is an outstanding video about sailing and entering a new unfamiliar harbor. I wish your videos were available more frequently, but it is what it is. Thanks for sharing the experiences.
Wow, this was so exciting. Everybody on board so happy to be finally arriving on land. I can understand. The was fog, whales, dolphins and birds for the welcome. And you even had some nice folks help at the dock. I'm ready for a beer!
Whew! Finally finished season three. I have been following you guys for a few years now and I am so grateful that you are sharing your experiences with us! Following along on your voyages and steadily seeing your production quality improve has been an absolute delight. I know you folks have a lot of backlogged footage to work through (and thank goodness for that!) so, I just wanted to say that you've made a fan for life and I deeply appreciate all the hard work you put in to documenting your journeys. I am not a sailor, but it's always been a dream of mine. You are imparting a candid view into the realities of cruising; a tale of personalities and landmarks and friendship, good times, and rough waters. As documentary series go, self-funded as it is (with help, of course, from your patrons), anyone with an inkling of love for the ocean and sailing would be hard-pressed to find a better crew to follow and cheer along. And I mean that from the bottom of my heart. Congratulations on publishing three seasons and I'm looking forward to seeing more of your adventure! Best, Mira
I love your videos. I've been wanting to take the plunge and live aboard a sailboat for nearly five years now and hopefully by next year it will become a reality. Your videos are an inspiration and I like that you show what life is really like at sea. Safe travels and fair winds to you.
It's in front of your nose @18:20. lol This is a classic, don't need to be long time DP viewer but it sure helps. And thier is so much more to come!!!!
Terrific video. I have sailed New England...and up to Halifax too. Very much wish to do Halifax to St John's by water. I was this past August. You are correct, a magical place with lovely people. But yes...with the dock wide open smart thing to lock up. Even a magical place can have a few unmagical people. :)
I don't think I could get anymore pumped up and motivated then I am right now. AWESOME VIDEO!!!!! Can hardly wait to get out of Florida and get up North. Thank you so much for the videos.
bound down for Newfoundland are crew they were. another season comes to an end with our crew taking shore leave as they leave us but fear not internet crew members for I am sure that they shall return. we can only wait and see what happens in the next season of the adventures of the mighty sailing ship Paragon ⛵
I was taken back a step. Being from New'found'land although not from St.John's it surprised me that there isn't a Marina or at least a secured place to dock. Then having no power, pump-out or water shocked me and I'm so disappointed. Being from a smaller North East Costal harbor town many smaller ports offer all of the above. I have never taken my boat into the St.John's harbour so I really was curious what was there. Thanks to your video I now know..
It would appear that the yachting and boating resources for the St. Johns region are on the Conception Bay side of the peninsula to the west, not the exposed Atlantic Ocean side where the commercial port is. But that's over 50-nm father, at-least 10-hrs of additional sailing. Lunenburg NS was a similar situation, the yacht club and the marinas were in the next bay north on the northwestern-side of town in Back Harbor and at Hermans Island, a full day's sail around the peninsula.
Apparently, similar to Lunenburg NS where the sailing clubs were on the other side of the peninsula, the St John-area's yacht-clubs and marinas appear to be on the west-side of the peninsula 12-miles to the West. Sailing the long-way around to Conception Bay is about 50 naut-miles away though. The Atlantic Ocean side of the peninsula must be too-exposed for much recreational boating...just the commercial traffic and the fishing fleet. It's probably a good thing that you cleared Customs in Lunenburg, other than the occasional yacht transiting to or from Europe it doesn't look like they don't get much traffic. ...By contrast, imagine what St. John's harbor must have been like in 1939-1945.
Intro to Season 4, "On this episode of DrakeParagon; who stole the mast?" 😂😂😂 Best of luck on your upcoming journey. Unless you've already pulled off🤔🤔🤔 I can't remember, too hot here. Thanks for the birthday wishes as well.
Thanks Joshua! In real time we'll be pushing off from Faroe to sail to Svalbard around July 1st. Can't wait to film it all. I'll send you some links. :) Happy Birthday!!! 🎂🎂🎂 - Drake
Drake, when does the next season start? I'm curious why you broke the season here. We arrived in St J a few days after you and tied up on the other side of the dock, so I know you went on to Greenland (through a gale) and then Iceland. Can't wait to see the next installments.Scott Sv Billy Ruff'n

Thanks Terry! We absolutely loved St. John's - what an incredible city and we met some wonderful people from there. Sorry to say that one night while we were sleeping we did get a pair of binoculars stolen that we accidentally left in the cockpit. - Drake
25:00 Not correct; while there are no services at that little dock, water and electrical are available farther down the harbour to the west. Though no fuel company is going to deliver only 35 gallons of diesel!
@@drakeParagon If you stop in Newfoundland on the way back, skip St. John's, round Cape Spear and tie up in Petty Harbour. 47º 27' N, 52º 42'. Nice small fishing village, great people, an easy 15 minute drive to St. John's.
Hi Bill, I wish it was possible for us to voyage, film, interview, edit, and publish all at the same time but it just isn't... not just because we almost never have the internet access while we're voyaging, but also because of the amount of time it takes us to edit each episode. Each of our episodes in Season 1-3 took us at least a full week just to edit, in addition to countless hours of filming. Over the years we've published hundreds of videos, and every single one has been our best effort. I think people watch our story because of the hard work we put into making the episodes worth watching, and we will continue to do so, but please realize that it takes us an enormous amount of time and hard work, and we can't do that while we're in the middle of voyaging. Our current plans are to spend our Summer focused on voyaging and filming, and to start working on Season 4 when we settle back down for the winter in November. Docking one of the things where it really helps to have crew! If I had to dock single handedly then I'd first use a line tied to a cleat on Paragon right at amidships, and with a loop at the other end. Approach the dock as slow as possible and somehow get that loop onto a cleat - throw it to someone on the dock and ask them to put it on the cleat, or if you can use a boat pole to put it onto the cleat, or with the boat stopped, quickly get off the boat and put it on the cleat and get back on the boat. From there it's easy to use the engine in slow forward gear and the helm turned all the way over steering away from the dock - doing this will put tension on that line and make the boat hug up to the dock. From there with the engine and that line keeping the boat on the dock you can take your time setting all of the other lines. But ya, way way easier with crew! Nowadays, Mo is usually the one at the helm bringing us in for a landing and I'm usually the one that jumps onto the dock with that line. She's actually much better at maneuvering into the dock than me. :)
John Morey-- Trouble with the Newfoundland accent... Well I have lived here in Newfoundland my whole life ( at least all of it so far ! ) And I listened again, and at 19:00 I hear "Port" ... HI Edward, We did get Screeched in! What a night. :) Coming in Season 4! :) Paragon originally had stanchions with regular lifelines. But then I hired a welder (I don't know how to weld myself) and he cut the tops of each stanchion off and then welded a long stainless pipe to the tops of each stanchion going all the way around the boat. Later I realized that I could have saved a lot of money if I had instead cut the tops off each stanchion and then just connecting pieces of stainless pipe in between each station with a simple stainless T connector like this one: www.westmarine.com/buy/whitecap--stainless-steel-90-tee-1-tube-outside-dia--17287319?recordNum=19
Yikes!! At $28/ea. the welder may have been less expensive than buying several cartons of tees and the tubing yourself. I'm endlessly appalled at the cost of marine-grade stainless steel hardware....
When we're underway offshore the salon is the most comfortable place to sleep on Paragon. Our aft cabin originally had 2 single sea berths with lee cloths, one on each side. But as a part of a big refit, I changed it by putting in a platform with a queen size Tempurpedic memory foam mattress on it. It's much more comfortable in port, but doesn't work so well at sea because we can't set up lee cloths anymore. - Drake
