    Why it failed imo:
    •The show and advertising used social media too much
    •Their outfits were either too boring or cringe (Bratz was a staple for street wear and club fits)
    •We never got to see their world beyond the studio (that's limiting for doll sets and stories)

    "Jade here likes extreme sports and making her own outfits! yeah, we can tell girl" im having a bad day and this made me laugh so hard, thank you!! as someone who grew up with the original dolls i was never a fan of them but i can definitely admit that they weren't as bad as i thought initially. it's mostly just the clothing i have an issue with - there's a few cute items here and there but most of it is really not for me

    Honestly, while the marketing and some lines are painfully dated, I have a soft spot for this era. There was a ton that was…less than palatable, but overall it wasn’t the worst thing ever. I remember wanting the pyjama dolls so badly, and loved that they came with their pets.
    Also, Raya’s burger heels were iconic. I don’t make the rules

    If anything, these dolls are a perfect time capsule of the mid 2010s. With the outfits, the box’ collage aesthetic and the hashtags, it all just screams 2015 tumblr/instagram!

      @jacquelinelugo5518 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      As someone who was 10 when Bratz came and was literally the Target audience. You said not one lie, they perfectly captured what the Mid-2010s was like. And I was just in my 2nd year of my Masters when the 2015 dolls came out. So many companies forget that us Gen Y were such a heavy influence for so many years. We almost rival boomers in population. So the market had so much of the influence of what we like at that time, even though we were in our mid to late 20s

    As original line they were ok and even predicted the cutesy style wave of dolls during the fashion doll drought, it's just they didn't feel like bratz even with the name, lips and pop off feets.
    One thing i think that you should have mentioned is that the two designers that worked on the reboot also designed L.O.L surprise, and you can find a lot of influences of the bratz reboot in LOL brand identity.
    Plus when they leaked a lot of fans thought they were a reboot bratz babyz, and they theorized that they were changed since the reboot flopped plus MGA previously did this with their brand Num noms that supposed to be a lalaloopsy pets spin-off line.

    The reboot wasn’t that bad, I agree. It has a special place in my heart, and it’s sad they did cut it off so fast because I could totally see improvements happening and the dolls heading in a better direction. Great video 😊🫶🏽

      I actually enjoyed looking at the dolls on the shelves and counting how many variations in the accessories I could find. One time I found ten different versions of Hello Jade’s scissors on one shelf and some of the colors were just bizarre. There was one that had blue handles but green blades, another that was all silver, and another that was neon pink. Study Abroad Yazmin I saw with an all green pineapple, a color reversal version, and one that had green leaves but a tan fruit.

    the reboot gives me disney live action remake vibes where it feels like so much of the marketing is based on how they've 'fixed' these female characters and made them more nuanced and independent (which really just means some surface level mantras tacked on), when in reality the original characters were already fine as they were, and people were just misogynistic towards them- but it's like that becomes the prevalent opinion, so the company feels like they have to respond to that rather than putting all their effort into making a high quality product for the fans. i was definitely a bratz kid growing up and i remember seeing the reboot on shelves for like half a year and just being underwhelmed by them. they're not awful dolls or anything, though. going back i probably would've at least bought music festival jade

    i was 11/12 when these dolls came out, i guess the target audience , but god i thought these things were hideous, bless their hearts😭 the first and last time i came across them was the ‘hello my name is’ line in an outlet store and i honestly thought they were knock offs of some sort. the dolls that came out later on seem cute and i probably would have gotten one but the hashtag and emoji marketing was such an ick to me and unfortunately that seemed to be the one marketed the most where i live. and it was the height of the emoji printed clothes epidemic ! just a very unfortunate time for those girls fashionably 💔

  • @skyephoenix9925
    @skyephoenix9925 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    i grew up playing with the original bratz dolls and i loved them. i loved how ‘mature’ they looked because i was the youngest of 5 so playing with them and giving them scenarios kind of made me feel like i could relate to my older siblings at the time. i was like 13/12 when this reboot came out, and i was mostly done buying dolls at the time trying to be more ‘grown up’. however i did see the reboot in stores because i fear no matter how old i am i’m going to look in the toy area of stores lol. i purchased one doll, it was a cloe doll with pink hair, and it was mainly because of nostalgia and i liked the color of her hair. but upon looking closer at the doll and realizing this was a reboot i was kind of off put. i saw it looked differently but it didn’t truly connect how different it was from the core bratz i grew up with. i didn’t buy anymore or paid any attention to the brand during this time because it felt very inauthentic to me and they lost the spark that made them so popular

  • @4everbratz
    @4everbratz ปีที่แล้ว +19

    I remember when these dolls came out and at that time I was buying so many Bratz dolls, and on the day of the 2015 dolls release, I bought the entire Hello My Name Is line (except for Raya). I had a bunch of dolls from this era.
    In retrospect, however, I can totally see why they flopped. For one thing, they didn’t give off Bratz vibes at all, they were just too cutesy and too try-hard. Plus, the whole emoji aesthetic and marketing was cringe. They’re weren’t atrocious, they had their moments, but overall, pretty disappointing.

    As someone who was a tween during this era of Bratz, I actually loved it. The outfits are 100% dated now but that's part of why I love it. The original Bratz took some time to grow on me, but I absolutely love the 2015 faces. I'm a big fan of the big eyed cartoony style on dolls, and the branding and social media aspect really appealed to me. I watched the shorts on TH-cam, listened to the song all the time, and watched every my froggy stuff collab. Some of the dolls are definitely dated and no longer my taste, but I find some of their outfits super fun and charming. I was definitely one of those "#frapacinno selfie stick 😘" kids and considering i exclusively shopped at justice and the childrens place i think tne outfits really resonated with me, for better or for worse. Putting that aside, i think a big reason bratz 2015 flopped was because of the parents. My parents were middle aged adults when bratz came out, and definitely had a negative view of the dolls. I had some friends who had younger parents who wouldn't even let their kids play with barbie. Come to think of it, growing up i may have only had one or two friends who was allowed to play with barbie. Not to mention around this time shopkins and blind bags in general were crazy popular, and monster high was on their decline. Fashion dolls just were not doing well at the time.

      The accessories of the reboot were actually pretty good. I still remember how one of the slumber party dolls had a tiny box of Chinese take out which is just brilliant and it’s surprising how rare such an iconic item is to find in doll scale. I mean even Barbie has only had a Chinese carry out box as an accessory just once for a Fashion Fever furniture set I believe. You’d think it would be used more often but it isn’t.

    I've been around and collecting all of the eras/generations of Bratz, I personally collected most of the 2015 dolls and they were a MASSIVE improvement on the 2010-2014 era. The 2010-2014 era had horrific quality with the worst hair thats ever been used on playline in recent memory as well as insanely lucklustre fashions and had eroded any of the personality the characters had in the 2001-2009 era, which in my opinion was mostly due to the damage caused by the Mattel lawsuit. While 2015 went in a much younger direction and a lot of the fashion was very bland, you can't deny there was a lot of thought, love and attention to detail put into every element, as well as references and call backs to early Bratz and each character having their distinct personality and fashion style returned, even if it was a more childish version. The quality and level of detail was there, the problem was it was just not really Bratz anymore, which was really the same problem MH suffered at the same time by doing a more youthful reboot. If they were a new line of dolls without the Bratz name attached people would've had a different take on them, and I think some of the later lines and leaked images of collections that were planned before it got cancelled were going in the right direction to improve. While I can appreciate this era and collected them, some of it was me just being glad that Bratz were back on the shelves and wanting to support them. However I completely agree with people who disliked this era because it really wasn't what Bratz was.

    I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for this era of Bratz since these were the first Bratz dolls I got. In my perfect world we'd be able to still have these dolls being made but called something other than Bratz since they're too cutesy and soft to truly be Bratz. Personally I'm glad this era happened since there still are several of these quirky, loud little ladies I love and cherish.

    I actually liked the reboot, for the most part. But I wasn't a bratz kid growing up so the cutesier style change wasn't as drastic to me. It wasn't until the first mh reboot that I understood why og bratz fans were so upset about it.
    I was also working at a toy store at the time & at least at my store, I was basically the only person buying them. & I mostly only got them on sale/clearance.
    Overall what I liked about them was how campy the fashions were & how many accessories they came with. I use their pieces to restyle my other dolls.

    I do think you're right about the overall branding being geared towards 'kids' but not understanding kids, but I think this was rampant across mass consumer products in general. I agree that caused it to be dead on arrival for the reasons you talked about. And the marketing team having more say in it feels right.
    For me personally, I'm super tired of the cultural phenomenon of being overly horrified by something being a lil aesthetically dated and wish people would have more neutral perceptions and chill out about it in general (I'm an 'anti-cringe culture' sort of person, I'm at the point I flinch every time I hear that word). It's just tedious to me. But I think the clothes can't really be judged next to what teens were wearing because I think they were going for more what 10 year olds were wearing to be relatable and generally age their product down. (Then again, my personal perception of fashion from about 2007 to 2018 and beyond is entirely skewed by being extremely active on polyvore, following runway shows, but also being a teen and adult guided by my own influences rather than the most mass tier mainstream culture of the times. I feel like if you were more influenced by that last thing more and maybe a bit younger, your idea of 2014 being this very distinct time period and being this specific look or 3 that I keep seeing brought up, which I mostly passively observed) (I sound a little pretentious, but I stand by it.)
    But I disagree about the goofy art style, I find that to be endearing...if their faces could be a little less googly eyes and the style more intentionally loose it would probably be better. It looks too digital to have the hand drawn feel and they could've easily given it a more traditional art style. But they didn't actually do much with it in their packaging marketing and opted for the emoji look instead which is interesting. I'm imagining a whole doodle-y sketchbook look.

    i’m consciously trying to be kinder to this line because a lot of its problems are just that the fashions are outdated, unlike the original bratz, who have the benefit of being “retro y2k”. it makes me wonder if the coachella girl or the basic girl will reenter the trend cycle and the 2015 bratz will suddenly be cool.

    I grew up on the original Bratz releases and I was sooo disappointed with all the reboots, I do think there was potential for the 2015 one- but I don’t love the faces still and the shoes were *way* to heavy for the dolls, which was good for standing them independently- but ultimately makes me worry about breaking the knee joints. And the hair quality wasn’t fantastic. I really love the collector reboot dolls they’re making and I hope they lean into the counter culture energy they had at the beginning- especially with the wide variety of aesthetics around now!

    I was a bystander of Bratz back in the early 2000s, most of my friends had them but for one reason or another I never had my own. I suspect my mother was one of the "those are too slutty" parents who judged the dolls based on the unfair internet criticism, but that's neither here nor there.
    Later in life, now close to 30, I have taken up thrifting and rekindling my love for dolls- as a result i have found lots of Bratz dolls; one of which being #Selfie Jade. I personally like her outfit so much that I can get around the fact that her face leaves a lot to be desired. I love the amazing make up from Monster High, and the fashion sense of Rainbow High or LOL dolls, but with Bratz there is this special sweet spot I require to find a doll and connect with them. This Jade didnt do that per-say, but I did end up liking her outfit enough to consider it Y2K and relatable, putting her on display.
    Side note, Raya's burger heels... I actually love them. Sue me. xD

    I love how Raya's outfit seems themed after bees...and then you got her BURGER themed shoes. It's like someone wearing a flower themed dress with a HOG DOG themed hat! It's so ridiculous that I can't help but laugh, it looks really funny.

    omggggg ok so i was a bratz king growing up. i had a few from every release as a kid, but when i was about 9 or so my mom decided to give them all away to someone else’s kid without my permission. so when this came out in 2015 and i had full capacity to spend what little money i had from chores on the new bratz. i was so excited… until i saw what they looked like. their original edge, and for lack of a better word, cuntiness was GONE. i was devastated. this is all to say your opinion on this come back was so so so valid. (btw i love your videos and i hope you’re doing well)

    i feel like bratz is a timeless fashion doll brand and it is exemplary through this era. honestly speaking, i do feel that out of all bratz reincarnations this was probably the closest that it has gotten to its roots, minus the focus on fashion. i mean this in the sense that:
    1. unlike the 2010 reincarnation, they introduced a small amount of characters at a time similar to the brands first launch in 2001, only having 4 characters
    2. throughout the years, i would agree that the girl's personalities have been incohesive and altered so much. however, i feel like compared to other reincarnations of the brand (2010-2013) the girl's personalities were probably the closest to that of the original and early days of the brand, but i would say that they were exaggerated and dramatized which was a very interesting take on them. cloe being the girly girl who has a sporty side, yasmin being the shy boho chic one (but she loss her sass), sasha being sassy and hip (i'd argue that out of all of them she probably stayed the closest...but she kinda lacked her sassy/street/musical/dance elements) and jade being the cutting edge sporty experimental fashion diva. this kinda shows that they never lost sight of the girls true personalities
    3. while the artwork might have looked a bit lackluster and uninspiring, and it may have looked like clipart that came out of a kids coloring book with uneven outlines, i really feel like the stylized, cartoony disproportionate proportions were very reminiscent of the early bratz artworks from 2001-2002.
    i also felt that the stop motion series was an interesting direction in terms of media for the brand as it has never been done or broadcasted in the U.S. before.
    i just don't really like or get why they had to add a 5th character, (i guess to refresh the brand in a way and make it new or an extra to look forward to) but they were always the girls with a passion 4 fashion 4 a reason. not the girlz with a passion 5 fashion.

    I had a few and bought & liked them but never quite enough to fully invest in this version of the line. And the dolls I did like only got to my area after my interest past. One thing I will always give bratz tho is that they are unafraid to try new versions of themselves each relaunch and while this one didn't quite get an audience I do think it's nothing to be ashamed of either.

    putting aside the toned down make-up, the 2015 faces just dont look as good. the proportions are off. the eyes and mouth migrated in to the center of the face. it just doesn't work.
    also, the fashion itself fell flat. the clothes are in garish colors and look cheap and juvenile. being more individual to the girls is a good idea, but the clothes looked like trash.

    okay so i'm gonna be real the biggest reasoni didn't buy any of the 2015 reboot dolls.... because i hated the matte lip look SO BAD, on top of that i was like 19-20 and the emoji stufff+ web series were both hella lame to me. Though if i had ever found a couple of those dolls that i KNOW never made it to stores here i woulda bought at least Yasmin so bad!!
    also tho... let's be real, the mid 2010s mainstream fashion was equal parts ridiculously plain and hilariously tacky, i'm surprised not to see more food and galaxy sublimation printed onto things and i'm kindof proud of them for holding back XD

    Bratz is one of those brands where the clothing of the dolls are reflective of the era they’re in. In the 2000s, they did a lot of lines inspired by 70s aesthetics, were based around “bling” and rhinestones, etc. because that’s what was popular at the time. The 2010s Bratz reboot flopped because the clothing styles of the 2010s were garbage. You can’t advertise your brand as a fashion doll if the fashion on the dolls are terrible. For those of us that grew up in the 2000s that were too young to wear crop tops, mini skirts and the like, Bratz were aspirational. By the following decade, popular stores were flooded with graphic tshirts and all over print leggings that people of any age could wear and none of it looked good. Dolls in general were falling in popularity but when you give consumers nothing to look forward to, you lose your appeal.

    I haven’t watched the whole video yet, but i’m just curious, was i part of a minority as a child ( and now i suppose) for not wanting my toys to have prepackaged personalities, names, and characters? When i was younger (and to a much lesser extent now) i never wanted to buy like disney princess dolls, or dolls that had a television series and pre-established personality. I wanted to be able to create my own character and my own world for them to be in. I want to decide there personalities and names.
    This is probably why i didn’t actually like dolls when i was a kid in the first place, i for the most part played with stuffed animals. I didn’t get into dolls until i found the youtube doll community actually lol

    The think is, Bratz were never that inappropriate, even in comparison to Barbie (I have a outfit from a 2011 pact where the shorts are very tiny and the top has spaghetti straps and it looks no more appropriate than what Bratz had. Similar to Monster High, I think parents (and Mattel, to try and sabotage the brand out of jealousy, and not just the sales) really made them more inappropriate sounding than they were. But with the fashionistas’ reboot in 2015, I think they were matching the times, if not gearing a little younger. But the issue was, people just wanted the original Bratz and that’s why they geared back to them.
    I actually wish Bratz would do playline once again like in 2011, but with the original look and maybe just a slightly higher cost of a Fashionista doll. There were characters from 2010/2011 that I think still hold up, especially Shadi, who I got. Her hair isn’t the best, but for that time, she’s honestly a character I wish would be rebooted into a new doll.

    The reboot was my first experience with Bratz, and as someone who never cared about the dolls before it and still really didn't then, it was a fun new thing to me. Also the selfie stick in one release was unironcially used to take a few hard photos for art reference, so there's that.

    Keep thinking that Jade's "homemade" fashion in this reboot looks in line with some of the stuff offered by Cool Shirtz. Especially the colorful patchwork outfit for the first line, reminds me a LOT of their one sweater just with plaid instead of solids.
