We fixed it in 10 minutes! My son & I called Tim to see about having him fix the laptop. Tim mentioned that some laptops did not retain the "Touch Screen" capability with the new parts. It occurred to me that if we unplug the touch-screen cable then the laptop would work. Yes,,, the cracked screen was still there. But we only had a small section that was cracked. Anyway if you need to access the laptop to get data or just use it, you can disconnect that wire and presto, the laptop works! You can replace the Digitizer Screen at a different time. Thank you so much for helping us Tim. You are an awesome person.

Finally got around to doing this. It took about 3 hours for me. Great instructions. A couple things that I would add: the screws on the hard drive mount need to be removed before the bottom plate comes off. The rubber on the edge of the bezel is quite easy to tear when heated, I was using a guitar pick and made two small tears in it. Do not touch the LCD after removing the digitizer panel or you'll be spending a while cleaning it. Same thing with the back of the new digitizer panel, leave the plastic film on it until you're actually ready to put it on the computer so it doesn't get dust and fingerprints on it. Aside from those things, the repair was exactly as the video demonstrated, and I was only left with 1 extra screw at the end, so I'd call that a win.

However, I could not get to those screws behind the hinges so I followed your video and it worked well. I have the 17" TouchSmart model but the parts are so similar that it worked fine.
I am going to use this great video to repair the laptop I have. Mine also had damaged hinge mounts and I fixed them using a great epoxy I found at a local home improvement store.
Just have to say thanks! I would not have tried this without the video. HP service manuals don't even cover this screen, let alone digitizer replacement. I think the digitizer could have been replaced without all the dis-assembly if HP hadn't put those little screws at the base of the bezel---otherwise could have been done with the screen still in place.

Hey Tim, Very, very, informative video. The reason I've been looking into the screen glass or digitizer replacement is, the rubber that protrudes out from the glass on my M7-J020DX, is dry rotting. I'm assuming. It's getting brittle and pieces are flaking off when I touch it opening or closing the laptop. The seal understand seems fine. Very rubbery and clean to the touch. So I took a hobby razor knife and gently cut away the exposed rubber that is flaking. Id hoped the screen could be removed without base removal. Watching other HP models replacement it's possible. But obviously mine is the ones that aren't easy. I guess my question is. Do you think I'm fine with it like this, being the glass and the digitizer is just fine, and the bezel seal seems good where not exposed to air? I was concerned the screen falling out. But it seems that it's actually snapped into the top cover. I don't carry the laptop around very much, it's mostly in place all the time. Anyway you do seem to answer your viewers, so id appreciate your opinion. It's an older computer I know but its working fine so I see no sense in buying anything else or even opening it up if its good to go. On my hp envy 15 inch touchscreen (model 15tj100), I don't know what is broken. Can you tell me? The display simply fades to a white screen occasionally. Sometime I can push or squeeze the bezel along the bottom and it comes back to normal for awhile, but it doesn't stay long before fading back to a white screen. I have clamped it, which helped for awhile but isn't helping any more. Can you tell me which part I need or what to do? Thanks in advance.

Well, I don't own a laptop but family does. They seem to look toward me if something goes wrong......boy, are they in trouble..LOL. I just replaced a display on a 17" Envy J-100. And I erroneously thought this would be a similar type project, but far from it. Being a little intimidated I would only try this on a laptop that I would be ready to scrap if it went sour...and how expensive would that be right? Maybe one day I might try it if the conditions and opportunity prevails. Thanks for this video!!

Yes you can. You also can just disconnect the digitizer ribbon cable and that will deactivate the touch. Only thing is you will have to live with any cracks in the glass.

Hi, I am fixing the same model, but I believe that there is only an issue with the Video cable. The image goes blank from time to time and can be fixed simply by pushing on the bottom bezel of the screen. I got a new cable off ebay and am going to swap it over. I assume I will have to remove the front glass totally off the screen to get to the cable?
How necessary is the replacement double-sided tape for the bezel, and what size is it? I'm currently doing this repair, and got it fully disassembled before I discovered the need for the tape.
There are severa different sizes. From 1mm all the way up to 7mm. I would purchase a 4mm and a 7mm to have at least 2 different sizes around. Very inexpensive tape.

heat a metal tray in the oven, remove and WAIT until it is cool enough to be hot but not burn you. place the broken digitiser on it and let it warm up nice and hot. the bezel will come off with little difficulty

I have the 17 inch ENVY touchsmart and I can access all of the bezel/digitizer attachments with the laptop completely assembled. It seems like if there were no problem with the hinges, you could simply skip the first steps to about 5:30, correct? The only thing holding the digitizer to the top lid is the digitizer cable so wouldn't I be able to just spudge off the digitizer with the rest of the laptop in tact (except for the battery) and then continue on replacing it?

I even checked the model number under my battery and ordered the glass exactly for that one (17T-K000) but when I received it, it was too large. It seems I have a very rare HP touchsmart that is slightly less than 17 inches.
Welp, I held the heat gun too close and melted the bezel. Do you know where I can find a replacement that I can attach the glass to? I ordered one off of eBay but although it was stated it's for an Envy M6, it didn't fit the glass, nor did it match the one I'm replacing.
+Scott Sanford I hate when that happens! When shopping for the bezel be sure to match the exact part number up. There should be a sticker on the inside of the bezel with a part number. You may have a difficult time finding a match as these HP Envy's have been a elusive bunch.
You laptop would look terrible if you simply remove the digitizer exposing wires and components. You can simply disconnect the digitizer but that requires disassembly and you are still left with a cracked screen.

+MrKhalidinoo Can't say for sure. It's important to match up the exact model of the laptop with the vendor you are ordering the digitizer from. Many traps you can fall into with these digitizers.

Could the control chip on the monitor go bad, I have one that had one crack, but the touch was not working anymore at all, you touched one area and it might register somewhere else or not at all, after I replaced the digitizer it looked great but the touch was working exactly the same way
Thanks, you helped me remove and repair one. however you DO NOT have to tear down the entire laptop. Simply removing the two outside corner screen screws near the hinges and start as if the screen is already off the laptop. This is what I did. Seriously you do not need to take the whole screen off to anyone watching. you're only giving yourself more work

There was another issue with this laptop that needed to be investigated that required the entire laptop to be taken apart. This was not mentioned in the video. So no you do not have to take the entire laptop apart.

Sounds like you need to replace the screen however I would recommend replacing the entire screen assembly that includes the screen and digitizer

Digitizer Front Glass can you just remove the Digitizer Front Glass and use the laptop as a non touch screen?

Friend I need your great support I have a hp envy the same model that shows the video where I can buy the spare of the touch screen that model is or that number of excellent part video
The touchscreen 'module' if i can call this... is USB? or direct to the motherboard in the same wire as screen? What is the brand of screen and touch? Thanks in advanced.

I have the 17 inch ENVY touchsmart and I can access all of the bezel/digitizer attachments with the laptop completely assembled. It seems like if there were no problem with the hinges, you could simply skip the first steps to about 5:30, correct? The only thing holding the digitizer to the top lid is the digitizer cable so wouldn't I be able to just spudge off the digitizer with the rest of the laptop in tact (except for the battery) and then continue on replacing it?
+Sam Chaney You are correct. You do not have to completely dis-assemble the laptop.
Thanks Tim! I found out for myself but now I'm having the damndest time finding the right touch glass! I even checked the model number under my battery and ordered the glass exactly for that one (17T-K000) but when I received it, it was too large. It seems I have a very rare HP touchsmart that is slightly less than 17 inches.
+Sam Chaney Yes these digitizers can be tricky to find. Many ratt holes you can crawl down. You may have to order from China
Welp, I held the heat gun too close and melted the bezel. Do you know where I can find a replacement that I can attach the glass to? I ordered one off of eBay but although it was stated it's for an Envy M6, it didn't fit the glass, nor did it match the one I'm replacing.
+Scott Sanford I hate when that happens! When shopping for the bezel be sure to match the exact part number up. There should be a sticker on the inside of the bezel with a part number. You may have a difficult time finding a match as these HP Envy's have been a elusive bunch.

the digitizer is cracked on mine, would the laptop still work if I just remove the digitizer..
You laptop would look terrible if you simply remove the digitizer exposing wires and components. You can simply disconnect the digitizer but that requires disassembly and you are still left with a cracked screen.

+MrKhalidinoo Can't say for sure. It's important to match up the exact model of the laptop with the vendor you are ordering the digitizer from. Many traps you can fall into with these digitizers.

What adhesive tape did you use and what size was it on this particular video?
I used 1/4 inch 3M double sided tape
you dont have to take the bottom of the laptop off, or remove the hinges. just pry and remove the bezel then the digitizer.

Basic set of precision screw drivers, a metal spudger came in handy, plastic spudger also is handy and some sort of heat gun or hair drier. Thanks for watching.

Could the control chip on the monitor go bad, I have one that had one crack, but the touch was not working anymore at all, you touched one area and it might register somewhere else or not at all, after I replaced the digitizer it looked great but the touch was working exactly the same way
Hard to say. It is always best to replace the entire top lid with screen and digitzer to guarantee proper touch functionality.

however you DO NOT have to tear down the entire laptop. Simply removing the two outside corner screen screws near the hinges and start as if the screen is already off the laptop.
This is what I did. Seriously you do not need to take the whole screen off to anyone watching. you're only giving yourself more work

watching this to repair mine but doesn't seem that you need to open the entire laptop, I might be wrong.
There was another issue with this laptop that needed to be investigated that required the entire laptop to be taken apart. This was not mentioned in the video. So no you do not have to take the entire laptop apart.
