  • A common problem with the b7 Passat is the struggle to get the car into first gear meaning the gear cables need adjusting. Hopefully this video helps you out

      Yes mate same issue I had buddy and this sorted it for me. It’s only the one cable that dose the side to side movement that needs doing really. I did have to go back in and do some fine adjustment on the one cable to make it perfect and not had the problem since

    This is awesome, I think this should solve the issue that I have with 1st and rear gear

    Hey, thanks for the video.
    I have a Volkswagen Passat B6 from 2005 with a 2.0TDI and a manual 6-speed gearbox. It is only FWD.
    Let me describe the symptoms and then I will tell you what I already did to stop this issue.
    Basically, I have troubles engaging and disengaging the 1st and reverse gear.
    Symptom 1: When I am in neutral and try to go to first or reverse, sometimes I can't push it in the gear. What helps is that I release the clutch, press it again or with the clutch still engaged, move the gear stick to 2nd and then slide it in the first or reverse.
    Symptom 2: Sometimes, when I am already in first gear or reverse, I hear that the engine is not completely idling and the car tries to move forward when in 1st gear and reverse when in reverse gear even with the clutch fully engaged. When I try to pull the gear stick out of first or reverse, the resistance is very strong and I need to pull hard. When I manage to pull it out of the gear, the car starts idling normally, meaning that the RPM drops a little bit. When I turn the car ignition off, the gear stick immediately loosens.
    Symptom 3: Another symptom is that when I am in first gear (or any other, but I am not sure), when depressing the clutch, at some point I feel the clutch pedal to jump a little. It feels like it stops following my foot going up for a split seconds and then jumps back.
    Actions taken already:
    Hydraulics bled (the brake and clutch share the same reservoir, so it was topped as well). Then, a mechanic changed the whole clutch with the clutch slave cylinder and the flywheel. After this, the problem persisted. It even feels that it the force I need to apply to pull the gear out from first or reverse is bigger and sometimes I rather turn of the car to take the gear out.
    I also changed the oil in the transmission but it seems that the problem persist.
    I am now deciding between changing the master clutch cylinder or have the linkage checked. My gear stick is pretty loose.
    Any suggestion? Sorry for the long comment.

      Hi mate. Did you ever find a fix? Mine is doing the same thing and I have done everything you’ve done bar the cable adjustment. I’m thinking it’s a hydraulic issue so I was thinking of changing the black round accumulator that sits next to the abs pump

      Guys forget it.
      It's the dual clutch.
      My Octavia had this problem also.

    My B7 Today decided to refuse to all of a sudden to not go into reverse gear. I am wondering if it might be something similar going on cable wise. It goes into all forward gears no bother but its as if the gate for reverse is no longer there..

    • @skidmores.garage
      @skidmores.garage  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes I’d probably say one of your cables may of stretched. One of the cables dose the left to right movement and the other the forward and back so you might need to adjust the left to right one. If not I wouldn’t know bud

      @@skidmores.garage on further looking I can’t get the mechanism on the top of the gear box to go into reverse when the cables are free, so I am now wondering if it is internal in the box itself

    I have a mk6 golf 2.0tdi same gear linkage setup as your passat, my issue is after driving the car and its warm I have difficulty selecting 1st and 2nd gear, the gear stick feels really stiff trying to move it side to side.. when the car is cold I can select the gears easy. Any ideas why its almost impossible to select gears when engine is warm?

    Interesting video I have a golf r I wonder if it works the same in them as I find sometimes I would have to go into 2nd and then up into 1st not all the time but sometimes so I must have a look to see if I can do that on it. Thanks Matt keep them coming really enjoy your videos.

    Going to attempt this today. Took car in for service yesterday, explained this problem and said id heard it was a common issue and poasibly cable tension. Theu reckoned it was fine but still having issues selecting 1st.
    One question: how did you repair the plastic pin you mentioned that broke as you took it out?

    • @JonGiles
      @JonGiles ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I attempted this today. Couple of things to note: it is possible to tension it such that you can’t select 1st or 2nd. Top tip: check you can select 1st over a short distance to avoid clutch damage….
      I cleaned out the plastic block as in the video and it helped. Can now select 1st a little better but it’s not like butter as in the video. I think this has to do with the fit of whatever you use to lock the gear stick. I tried a few variations on position but there is clearly a sweet spot I haven’t quite found.
      Anyone else found this?
      Oh I can probably take the air box out in about 30s now if needed to 😂😂

      @@JonGilesDid you get it fixed and buttery smooth?

    • @JonGiles
      @JonGiles 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@linuskristian 1st gear selection is easy with no problems. It must need some slight adjustment again as a couple of times it has dropped into reverse instead of 1st without pushing down as normal so something still not quite right. Haven’t got anyone/thing doing this but am careful to make sure it is in first!!

      @JonGiles that's wack! The only issue I'm facing with my gear shifter is that it seems that the gears don't want to go in properly every time.. like I have to force the gears in!! Gets stuck in the middle of changing the gear.. could this be because of the clutch? It's a 2006 wv passat b6 2.0l fsi
