In this video I cover a summary of the book How to become a straight A student. Many students don't think of true optimal ways of how to get better grades. This book focused more on unique ways to study in order to maximize your time and efficiency. The author did not focus on students who simply studied longer hours to achieve high grades. These aren't exactly study hacks, but just proven study techniques of straight A students.
High scoring students often participated in "deep work" where they worked with no distractions but for shorter periods of time. Your brain can only handle so much focus at once, so it's important to take breaks.
You should keep a calendar handy for time management purposes. It's important to keep track of what needs to be done on a given day so you don't waste mental energy worrying about remembering everything.
Note that even top students couldn't beat the urge to procrastinate, however, they were able to manage that feeling. In the video I discuss 5 ways to manage that feeling of procrastination including...
    1) Keep a work progress journal
    2) Give Yourself Energy
    3) Make Studying an Event
    4) Build a Routine
    5) Choose your Hard Days
Lastly make sure when taking exams to plan out your time for each problem and work from easiest to hardest. If you don't know something during a test, skip it and move on.
Some things mentioned may seem difficult to adopt as a habit but if you give it a few weeks it will become second nature and you should see your grades start to improve and even your free time go up.
Remember if you want to get better grades it's not just a matter of having more time, it's about managing your time well, organization, and mimicking those who are successful. If you make a habit of proven study tips, you'll see how you can get straight A's in school.

Best way to do exams is to just do them. Seriously, I know it sounds dumb but literally do it. Don’t look at the time, don’t look at the amount of questions. Just be confident in your knowledge base and do them. Only double check your answers once you finish the exam. Sincerely-Someone who has never made less than a 90 on an exam.

As a fourth-year engineering student with a 4.0 I would say this video is mostly accurate. Here is some advice and a few thing I differ on, tho:
You will still need to work hard and sometime for long hours, these tips don't replace hard work, just suplement it.
Avoiding procrastination is hard, but the more you do it, the more you will thank yourself later. I try to stay a week ahead of all my classes, which is very difficult at first, but by the end you have way more flexibility and free time. Treat assignments that are due in 8 days like they are due tommorrow. This forces you to start early and if you slip up, it doesn't hurt your grade
I don't study everyday, like the video recommends. For exams, I do tend to start studying 7 to 5 days before, if I can, which gives me enough time to absorb and review the material. However, I do review relevant material before, after, or during every homework assignment, which keeps it fresh in my mind and helps me make sure I am correct, improving my homework grade. (If you are in a class with optional homework, always do the optional homework). Any assignment you do the night its due, or where you litterally have to rush to turn it in on time, is not one you are going to do as well on.
This may be a no-brainer, but never turn down extra credit. Do every single extra credit assignment, unless you have such a time crunch that it would affect your regular ones.
Study where you focus best. If you can turn your room into focus zone, this will be insanely convient for you. However, if you have a roomate, this is probably impossible.
Study groups generally suck, unless you really get the right people. If you are aiming for As, you should study with the people also getting As. If you study with people doing less well, you will generally spend most of your time helping them, which will help you with remembering the material, but won't allow you to focus on the things you are struggling with.
Go to your professor's office hours, or to learning centers (especially in early classes). They will know how to solve those problems you are struggling with and will really help you out. A five minute conversation with a professor can sometimes replace hours of struggling. Also, some times your professors will mess up grading or misread your answers. Talk to your professors about why you got a problem wrong if you don't understand, including on exams. They will either help you get the material better or they will give you points back.
If you struggle with motivation, constantly remind yourself what you are aiming for. What you want with your degree and why you are in college. What you are putting in all this effort for. If you don't know what you want, figure it out as soon as you can.
I don't do journals or anything like that, I generally just keep things in my head, which works fine as long as I remember. I do make sure to plan out what I want to accomplish each day either every night before I go to bed or every morning before I wake up.
I generally just do exam problems in order. For the vast majority of the time, its fine. Also, if you have extra time before the end of exam, never leave without first reviewing all your answers.
There will be times when it is hard to figure out how much more effort you need to put into succeed, especially when just starting college. I hate to say, but if you want straight As, the answer in those situations is to just work harder. You will eventually figure out how much you need to study and work (maybe after the first exam), and can start to chill out. I always try to aim for 98% to 100%, and once I feel confident I will reach that point, I move on. That way, I fall short, I still tend to get around an A or above. If you spend all your efforts on one classes, your performance will start to suffer in others, so space out your time between classes, even if you have an exam in one and not the other. You still need to get other work done.
Take time to relax, but only if that thing actually makes you feel better. If you spend 8 hours watching tv and feel guilty and shitty afterwards, you wasted 8 hours. And if you ever suddenly get the urge to work, drop whatever you are doing and go work. Those moods won't happen often and they are your productive times.
If you got to the end of comment, Congratualtions! I hope this long comment on a three-year old video helps you!

EE student here. These are my recommendations:
-DO YOUR HOMEWORK. I cannot underestimate the significance of homework. Through it different problem solving techniques and questions styles get revealed to you. It is also the best way to check if you understand the material.
-Do not skip classes. Even if the professor sucks, it is better to only understand half the topics discussed and catch up (which you will probably do anyway at some point) than to not being in touch with the pacing of the lectures.
-DO NOT study with more than 2 people at a time. This too is sometimes too much. From personal experience I'd rather study by myself and keep in touch with other students you know are good, then when you get stuck on something, have a discussion with them over this question on the phone. Both parties will benefit.

With procrastination I have my own technique. Basically when I procrastinate it's because I really don't feel like doing the work and can't focus on it properly but I also don't really want to fully go off doing something else because I've told myself I "might" get back to it later. This is a mistake. Procrastination is the result of feeling burnt out so what you need is to let yourself take a real break, rather than clicking random youtube videos or something both feeling bored and dreading having to go back to work. This strains your mind in the same way as actually working does, so just go off and give yourself a couple hours worry free. When you eventually get bored of what you're doing, you find it much easier to spend time actually focusing on your study and may even have motivation.
It's important to note this is a technique best used when getting work done as soon as it's handed out. Also don't just tell yourself you're going to do it later right at the start that will never work. As soon as you get an assignment, write out whatever is easiest to get down on paper and keep going until you burn out because the words on the page will serve as an excellent starting point when you come back from 46 straight hours of KSP. Doesn't even matter if it's good. In fact, the worse it is, the easier it is to get stuck into it because you can see mistakes immediately and will have a very clear starting point. This is basically the easiest way to get into flow and come out with a finished assignment a few hours later with minimal motivation required.
There. That's my low effort high productivity plan. For context, I'm studying math and physics and hand all my assignments in weeks before they're due and get straight As.

Getting an engineering degree has been one of the hardest things that I have ever done. I hate school and so many of the things associated with it. • @ajf9408
      @ajf9408 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@William Shakespeare eh the physics and chemistry probably won't be that relevant to the career path anyway but the math might. My best advice would be work hard to get good grades, find some sort of club or society at school that is relevant to your major and participate and be active and try to get some sort of leadership position like even a secretary, go to all of the career fairs, and be trying to apply to internships the whole time. That's kind of my personality but I really hated school and wanted my sacrifices to pay off and there are a lot of people that go to college and put a heavy emphasis on just hanging out and having fun with friends outside of class but then have a really hard time finding work once school is over. People who work really hard and do that stuff might still struggle to get a great job after graduation and for the people that didn't go hard, it's even tougher. But all of that stuff can really help give you a good chance at landing something competitive/well paying and that you can be proud of when it's time to graduate.

I completely agree with everything in this video/book! I used to use most of these habits and for my first 4 years of college maintained a 4.0 and got my associates in CS and Math. But, since then depression, distractions, and especially one particular course sent me on a downward spiral and my habits were ruined. I work far less efficiently now than I did before, and don’t get enough sleep or have enough time. The sooner you can institute these habits the better, and don’t let yourself allow any course, professor, or life problem ruin your schedule/habits. In fact, I’d argue that if dropping a class is necessary for you to stay on your game, you should do so, because it will only affect you one quarter/semester, but ruining your habits will follow you for years!

  • @williams.779
    @williams.779 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Yes, a lot of things are so true. In my first semester, I got sick for ~ 2 weeks and it ruined my motivation to go to class. I survived the semester, but with a few too many C’s for my comfort. No failing, no D’s, so I can’t complain too much. Last semester, I got COVID disturbing my classes, and I was forced online. Since I was at home all the time, I was technically doing more work. I didn’t have anything else to do. I still missed the synchronized “in person” classes but I got the recordings afterward. Despite the unique challenges that COVID provided, I did much better. Some of it was knowing what to expect, some of it was “attending” more class. For those of you who work hard in high school, you’ll make it. Your main challenge is to manage stress, but that’s potatoes in comparison to those of you who are like me- who didn’t have to try in high school, and whenever you did, it still felt kinda easy. Stress will be an issue, but it’s nowhere near as bad as trying to pick up the slack. Also, this is for everyone, your first semester will go poorly. Maybe not as bad as mine, but you will not meet some expectation you had about college. Your GPA or social life will suffer, but you can pick yourself up for the second semester and you will do better.
If you are on the fence about going to college, I will say this: don’t go to college just to make your family or friends feel proud of you. You must personally feel the need to go. Otherwise, you’ll slack through college and get a useless degree with mediocre grades. Go to college for yourself, not others.

Thank you so much! I’m a sophomore in Highschool and chose this year to take some hard classes (Physics and AP Euro). In those classes I find it very hard to remember most of the things we learned (especially in AP Euro since my teacher just bombards the whole class with notes, reading assignments over the weekends, and a quiz on those reading assignments the day we return. A LOT of people are struggling with that class.

Does anyone else have issues to getting into that deep study mode? I've tried things like leaving my phone off across the room and removing all distractions but especially when working through math problems or writing, my brain wanders and I blank out when the answer doesn't immediately come to mind. Does this happen to anyone else and do they have any solutions to it?

    • @Siass007
      @Siass007 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

two years ago...hope you found a solution but if not here is something that might help you.
-you could try staying focused for as much as you can and then when your brain blanks out try just let it go, don't think about anything nor force yourself to think about nothing. Go for a walk, take a shower, or anything else honestly and after that you can come back to styding.
This is the deep focus combined with the defusive method if you're interested

Good advice! Been there... GPA4.0, sadly life is sometimes not only about the grades.
Especially, when you actually get 4.0, but on a completely different study path than you wanted to begin with.
Before aiming for 4.0 - first ensure that you're actually on you OWN path, before... too late :))

But I think doing the work on your own is much more effective than going to class actually. For example, in biology I'm much quicker on my own. That's because in class everybody has to understand and only then the teacher will move on. It really depends on the person and the classes they take I think.

Average time of 3-4 days from the time of thinking of the video idea to having it up on youtube. 1-2 days to write the script (which is the longest part), 1 day to animate and record, then less than a day to time it and upload it. Some videos take longer and some shorter. But after I read deep work I finished like 2 videos in three days which is faster than I ever have.

I think that true you should give yourself time per problem, but if you just go from easiest to hardest I dont think you need it as much.
not all problems are created equally and require some time for you. do your most easy problem firsts, you will finish it faster then you think, then go up and up and up. sometimes doing this I end up in 3-hour tests with 1 hour just for one problem, which gives me all the time to try alot of methods if I just forgot what I needed to do specifically.
if you don't know what to do, do what you know. never get stuck on the same problem if you have other ones that you didn't finish, but also if you do move to a different subject, try to clean your desk so the progress already done on that one problem is quickly available and easy to return too.
also between each problem if you got stuck, take a 2-minute break, just calm down. but if you finished an easy problem and you are in the zone, in the mood, do as many problems as possible until you feel like your head is about to explode, take a 3-minute break, then do the hardest problem left.

Honestly im not going to say any of these tips will be impossible for me to do because that has never been my mentality.
But one thing all my life i have struggled with has been in reading comprehension. Ive even taken IQ test and scored very well in everything but in anything reading the percentile i was in was the high 80s.
The point of me saying this is that I find that reading has set me back from easily being able to manage the tips you have given me.
Even if i am preemptive in the way your tips want me to be in tackling a lot of my work load from my classes, a lot of the study time is extended to where i feel like even with a lot of time the work blows out of proportion.
I hate the fact that it seems like no matter what it is inevitable that even with efficient methods i manage to have to put in more work than others do. I dont know if there is a tip on improving in reading because other than that i feel like doing things in college would be super easy for me. Ive made it to the 3 year mark in software engineering with this problem.
Also the bigger issue is that a lot of the things given for you to learn from in college are textbooks. Not interactive things such as videos or hands on things that will help you understand the concepts. So ive had a difficult time in studying through out the day because i could spend a whole hour trying to read understand and memorize a single paragraphs worth of content for a specific class ... considering i have 5 or 4 classes where i may have hw assignments for the others i cant afford to be spending all day on just one class.
Furthermore it seems to me if the semester starts bad, it is harder mid semester to implement these new methods. If you dont start well its super hard to bounce back without overload.
And lastly, i think one thing i hate is having struggled through most of a class how when i manage to pass the class i feel like i dont pass with the full understanding of the course i would have liked to have (and i love the conceptual aspect of the courses). So i feel like although im that much closer to the degree ... i am depriving myself of the learning im paying for.
I have a lot of problems sorry i put it all in one comment but if you come across this and can help in any way anythings appreciated. Ive thoroughly enjoyed all your videos.

Yup; that’s why math it’s better to write out the problem, or do it in your head than rely on a calculator.
As for the photos or screenshots, as long as you write down what you photographed, you’ll be fine
