I space out deep work by using the Pomodoro Method. It helps so much. I like that my only immediate goal is 50 minutes. Then I get up and walk around for 10 minutes in between. I usually wear a rubber band on my wrist and when I find myself spacing out I just snap my wrist and tell myself wake up.
Thank you so much for the brief and clear description! I actually put it off and procrastinated but now that you mentioned it, I guess is a type of sign that I should finish reading it and get the best out of it!
I am really impressed by the review of this book and I am definitely gonna buy it... thanks Brian for this awesome review and my fav idea was WHEN WHERE AND HOW LONG
Wow! This is really great! I've read the book and I came here to make sure the points are cemented! And you did present it effectively and efficiently! My points are definitely cemented! You're a great teacher sir!
nice video. cal has a lot of ideas about learning from the book "make it stick - the science of successfull learning". i highly recommend this little book if you wanna learn more about "learning"

The strategies mentioned in "How to Become a Straight A Student by Cal Newport" for writing papers are for writing Term Papers or the same strategies can be applied for writing a Journal/Confernece paper especially in engineering or technical field at Master and Phd level?

Actually never mind, Thomas does pronounce is little different because the word is pronounced as, " Psu-e-do". Whereas I am not as sure, if that is how I spelled that right for knowing how to break down the word to pronounce the word right.
I don't understand Brian, doesn't he says in "deep work" that we should work for 1h30 and more to produce deep work ? Here you say we shouldn't study for more than 1 hour. Is it because office work and studying are different ?
Martin Vrz, it's because he talks about different books in these videos, it's not Brian's advice based on his personal experience, and the authors give different advices. It's up to us which one we choose to study/work by.
Yes i got that part. I read Deep Work from the same author and C.Newport (the author) says we should work for long chunks in order to produce valuable work, whereas in this book he says we shouldn't study for more than one hour (i confirm, i read it). My question was : why this same author give two radically different advices ?. I just guess it's because studying and memorizing is more demanding than working at the office (but it kind of seems like a weak explanation)
Martin Vrz I don't think they're necessarily different, one is about studying, committing concepts to your memory, while another is about producing work. If I'm writing an essay for example, I can write for long stretches of time once I get in a rhythm, but I'll get tired pretty quickly if I'm constantly revising unfamiliar concepts
Martin Vrz If I remember correctly, Cal wrote in his blog that studying and work, as in office work etc are kinda different and you need more breaks when youre studying. These breaks are supposed to be "deep breaks" where you can do things like meditation, rehydrate etc. Nothing that will break your flow and as a student you shouldnt study for more than 50-60 mins at time.
The way how you pronounce Pseudo is kind of awkward. Because another study tips Guru Thomas Frank, he mentions Pseudo Skimming in his covering the 5 reading strategies. Not only that but Thomas is already my first favorite study tips guru. But doesn't Pseudo work sound like your passively reading. Whereas, reading by word excluding the different ways without reading paragraphs by words. Instead, Thomas states, is to hack Akrasia by using this short term award for eating healthier snacks like almonds for each paragraph. And also, tracking your progress is much important because Thomas uses BeeMinder which, is basically a website of keeping track of the assigned tasks for certain numbers by time in minutes. Overall, I am worried that I may be missing important key terms, phrases or few details and fast facts from, certain parts of the paragraph when using Pseudo skimming.
great video brian but cal's idea's are not so revolutionary ,first of all the best way to improve your knowledge in a subject is to apply the knowledge but memorizing wont do any good

1. start early---Isolation---max 1 hr
2. space out your sessions
3. reread no-->quiz urself / test yourself
I have my finals in less than a week and this really helped me, I feel more motivated, and hope I’ll use this tips. Thanks for your time and content
Thank you so much for the brief and clear description!

It helped me have a awesome result on my recent tests, math and history
This is the best study video I have ever seen
working, studying etc can be boring, but if you have to do it anyway, then it's better to make it meaningful.

Great Ideas! I need to start applying this.

Deep Work and How to Become a Straight A Student which one buy first? I got interested on reading Cal Newport books
Read both
I'm thinking the same
@@ndndndnnduwjqams I read both and they are not good
@@ketsune23 why not
@@wonwon9656 there are many ideas I don't agree with and others are just common sense like for example having a notebook to plan your to-do list.
Nicely presented!
