In the wake of the September 11 attacks, Captain Mitch Nelson leads a US Special Forces team into Afghanistan for an extremely dangerous mission. Once there, the soldiers develop an uneasy partnership with the Northern Alliance to take down the Taliban and its al-Qaida allies. Outgunned and outnumbered, Nelson and his forces face overwhelming odds in a fight against a ruthless enemy that takes no prisoners.

Viet Nam vet here. Not even close to being realistic. In the movie you see about 20 gasoline bombs going off, but the Buff carried 108, 500 lb bombs. Leveled a path up to 1/2 mile wide and at least a mile long. Real bomb missions were a sight to behold!

I worked on crypto equipment in Vietnam that was used to call OFF a B52 strike (Arc Light) when it was determined that there were friendly troops in the area at the last minute. Needless to say, it was our highest priority circuit.
I experienced a B52 strike from about 5 clicks away. It's been 48 years since it happened, and I can still feel it. I've got to say it's nothing like this movie. Not quite right! Our team leader (the Cpt.) moved in to get a better sighting. Then, some of the Taliban came up to his new overview position and tried to kill him. Members of the Captain's unit then rallied and providing "covering fire" until the Cpt. could call in the better coordinates for the B-52 strike! Always tough to get the first volley of heavy fire power units exactly "on target" . Adjustments usually have to be made; quickly and accurately, though. Some FAO's are better at doing that than others. Similar to "aiming and hitting" a golf ball toward the next hole!

B-52s and B-1s can fly much further before needing to hit a tanker and once over the Afghani airspace they could stay there much longer. The navy could provide protection for the buffs and bones with tomcats and hornets, but they would have to hit a lot tankers.

I thought in the first year of fighting the Taliban still had control of a national "army" (such as it was) --they were still trying to mop up the Northern Alliance, so they had all the old regime's tanks, APC, artillery etc. Being it was mostly Soviet era equipment the gear was easy to use and easy to maintain--the AK principle. As I understood it, there was something like 50 or 60 thousand troops of varying quality (AND I even heard there were tens of thousands of Pakistanis in A'Stan too), and they had no reason to hide or worry about what the Northern Alliance could throw at them.
I'm sure after a few encounters with the B52s, those who survived quickly altered their strategy.

The coalition of Afghan leaders was concerned about the USA being casualty adverse (of US personnel). The Afghans wanted US weapons, equipment, and $$$$$ More than killing lots of Taliban (expecting a decades long conflict; they had been fighting since 1989 against the Taliban).
The B52 was dropping JDAMs, one at a time.
The first JDAM missed by about 500 meters. The ODA wasn't happy. The Afghan leader and his men, knowing the bomb came from the USA, figured getting it in the correct valley was practically a Miracle!

Amazingly, the Taliban came out to inspect the Bomb Crater. They called back on the Radio, they Refused to believe it was a bomb that came from a Plane. I saw 2 B-52s drop their loads on the horizon in Vietnam. They came out of Guam. We got notice on my ship, about 20 minutes before the drop. This movie was not 1/10th the destructive power that I saw. I saw twinkling red flashes on the horizon going across a large area about a half mile long. About 45 seconds later, there was a long sound of rolling thunder for about 40 or 45 seconds. A half hour later the dirt and dust that had been kicked up had gone into the sky like dirty dark clouds. It drifted over the ship that I was on, several thousand feet up. It is not something that people forget. It turns the jungle into shredded trees and moon craters. German cities at the end of WWII got the B-52 treatment worse than anyone else did.

Most of that tonnage is 'mud moving'. Block 'The Trail' (the one in Laos that didn't exist) or bomb it to hit the supply depots, base camps and the like=-=the rest was hopefully to tear up the mud of the trail to keep supplies from moving. NVA Engineers bulldozed and shoveled the mud and dirt and craters out of the way so the supply traffic could move again--airforce comes back: rinse and repeat, repeatedly for years.

For those of you who enjoy a great non-fiction book pick up a copy of "Jawbreaker" by Gary Berntsen, published in late 2001.
Right after 9/11 I had no idea who attacked us. But the CIA did. Berntsen was a mid-level CIA field operative and they sent him along with members of the Special forces community to the tribal areas between Afghanistan and Pakistan to fight the Taliban and Al Queada. I don't remember anything at all about them using horses but other than that this video seemed really true to the book. My sense is that at no time did we have more than 100-200 Americans on the ground but we took advantage of the enmity between the Northern Alliance tribes/ warlords and the Taliban. The Northern Alliance was happy to do the heavy lifting and bleeding in exchange for American technology and B-52s. Just like in the video one of the main Northern Alliance warlords taunted one of the Taliban over the radio telling him that he's sending bombs with the Americans' death ray. By that he meant the ground-based laser targeting that aided the B-52 strikes. In the book they were not using an estimation of location via a grid system like in this video.
In another chapter Berntsen or another CIA guy had the cellphone number of one of the Taliban chieftains. Berntsen had a huge tupperware with $3,000,000 in cash. He called the guy and offered him a choice; in ten minutes he'd have a B-52 rain oblivion down on them OR he could accept the prize money and join the Americans. The guy took the cash and helped the Americans/ Northern Alliance. Other than the 9/11 attack itself I can't imagine a war being fought so cheaply (and with so little loss of American life.) Fascinating book, couldn't put it down.
