Why is crate training so important? Dogs that understand being in a crate is a positive experience will have an easier life. Dog crates should be large enough for the dog to be comfortable, but not big enough for them to play in. Teach your dog to like his crate so that they feel safe - if they ever end up at the vet, they will be crated, if you have to fly with them - they will be in a crate, if you stay at a hotel - a crate is a good idea. This crate training video should approach the crate as a crate game, not a forced crate time out. All in all start by training your dog that the crate is a positive thing. Too many people force dogs into crates and hope they end up liking it, this is wrong and damaging to your dog. In this video I spell out everything and don't miss a single detail. Whether you are having issues with crate training or are brand new to the topic, this video will get you to understand this amazing concept for your dog.
Puppy training and house training your puppy should involve using a wire crate so that the dog can see everything around them. This video will teach you how to get your dog to love the crate!

I recently adopted a young dog from a shelter who refused to go in his crate. Knowing that he is treat motivated, your video helped tremendously! By the next day, my dog loves his crate. Thank you!!

Such common sense, Robert teaches. ❤
We don't have to " trick" our dogs, and that's not a positive thing anyway. It will backfire. I love Mr. Cabral's instruction. He really knows and loves dogs! And gives simple, clear instructions. No needless chattering like many people's videos. He's #1 in our book.

Please....please if you have time, put together a video with this crate training process when bringing home a new puppy for the first time. I want to do everything possible to get off to a good start and build a lifetime foundation of communication and understanding with the new pup. Thank you in advance for your time, your blogs and videos are an invaluable source of knowledge and information I am eternally grateful to you.

Last Saturday my shelter placed a beautiful light frame pit mix ... a gentle, ez to train, easy going dog (from CA)w no apparent problems. Returned this morning because the newbie owners, wo training or habituation, crammed him into a crate for 10+ hours each night. He broke out ... good for him! Houdini Dog will find a home by next week easy.

      @Starry_Night_Sky7455 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Geezer, 10 hours! That's cruel. People are that stupid. Glad he is outta there. 4 hours is the limit. You can acclimate a dog to a proper sized crate to sleep through the night but Its done gradually or you are using a very large kennel box that is at least 4ft x 4ft and covered plus supervised. Dog gets turned out asap in morning or through the night to pee outdoors. Geez, maybe a knowledge test should be required prior to adopting? Houdini, lol. He was being smart to break out of a confined space that he had not been conditioned to accept. To him it was a trap.

I truly appreciate your videos. I currently have a Great Pyrenees/Newfoundland puppy who has the herding drive and doesn’t like her crate. I learned through you I don’t need to shut a door to be crate trained. Such a simple concept where she can still see her world and let her drive to herd still be utilized. She understands her bone is the only place she gets it and is a happy place. Thank you also for showing how to give a new dog treats without having your fingers bit. She’s going to be over 100# and definitely needed. 😀

My Belgian Malinois came from across the country, ever since then he has been afraid of staying in the crate for longs periods of time. When were at home he's fine, but if we go on a car ride; or even just to the vet's he freaks out. This video helped a lot, what I was doing wrong was rewording him when he came out from the crate. Thank you so much for this video, now I have no worries about associating him with his crate.

Thanks for this video! This helps me with my Malinois who seems to be terrified of the crate, it’s taken 4 days to get her comfortable to go in it. Treats weren’t working so I’ve had to place her food and water inside. I hope to get her use to the smaller carrier style, she won’t even approach that.

I’m so lucky to get to see this video!! Your explanation is clear and positive. I started kennel training my 2 year old frenchie yesterday and I made mistake by praising him also when he came out after staying inside for a while. I’ll follow your instruction today onwards. Thanks Robert!! As we will be flying long haul in few months’ time.
I wonder if you could also teach me how to get the dog sleeping in the crate too? As mine has been sleeping with my daughter since he’s a baby... thank you so much!!

    Awesome video!
If you have a puppy that hasn't grasped the concept of training yet, you might try it like this: put things that your puppy likes in the crate, close it, let the puppy stay outside and try to "break into" the crate but don't let it in right away, let it obsess about the crate first. Then choose one of the "goodies" that are in the crate, put the other goodies away, let your pup in and let it have fun with the treat/kong/whatever. After the pup is done, get it out of the crate, put tasty things back in, close the crate, the puppy stays outside. This way the puppy feels like the crate time is party time and wants to get in the crate every time you open it. Be greedy with the crate time at first, so that the puppy gets the feeling that it's awesome and it has a high value. You can then gradually increase the crate time because your pup will wanna stay in there anyway.
This also works well with grown-up food-driven dogs.

We do this with his dinner. Ours is very food oriented so we take him out and close the door once he's paying attention to me and sitting he gets into the crate for his food. It's worked a treat for both teaching him he only gets food when he's not obsessing over if and is looking to me for instruction but also he wants to go in the crate and can't and when he does it's very happy

Thank you for the video! I will post a couple of questions. Maybe you have links to more videos to answer. Ok, what about having a few toys in there? Do you cover the crate at night? Do you put a bed in the crate and stuffed toys? I think I had too many things in the crate with Fletcher (9 year old Golden), when he was a puppy. I think he got over heated and learned to hate his crate. We are getting a new puppy - so it is time to brush up on training. Thank you!

Robert! Thank you for all your good videos. When I adopted my GSD puppy 5 weeks ago when she was 11 wks old I first watched a video of some other trainer that was not showing these great tips. However, I naturally tried to make her crate a pleasant environment. She has her bed and her toys in the crate, and she is fed there. I will fix some of the procedures to make her crate the main place of the party.
My question is that shall I keep her in the crate all the time (I also have put the bed in the crate) as one other youtube video was suggested to keep them in the crate when they are not under training? One was advised to keep them in the crate to avoid developing bad habits...
Appreciated it if you guide me about the lifestyle. I and my wife have 2 kids (10 and 3) and we all love our puppy, but we are confused about how to train her and not to let her develop bad habits and how to do all in the way that is good for her.
    Thank You

My 5 month old puppy Golden retriever stays quietly in the crate but doesn't like to go in it voluntarily. As a smaller puppy I would carry him in and now he won't go in own his own. Also, I will be changing the crate to a bigger one soon. Also I usually keep a leash on him while in the house in order to tether him to me, so when it's time for a nap I ry to remove the leash and he bites by arm with alot of pressure. How can I fix these issues? He is very smart and he has learned many things and I watch and read alot but I feel overwhelmed. Thank you for your help. Your videos are very smart and so helpful.

I'm doing as much research as I can before getting a farm dog. If there are any specific books and/or resources you can direct me to, or if there is a specific kind of training that would be beneficial for a herding or livestock guardian dogs, I'd be grateful for any information you can give. A farm with goats, cattle, a cat, a mule, and ducks is a few years off at least and with so many living things involved im trying to get as much info as possible so they're all safe happy and healthy. I don't like how my mother trained our dogs, which I now understand was abusive from living with my friend and watching how she trained her hound dogs. I learn a lot watching her, but it's sometimes hard for me to understand when she verbally explains it. Again, any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

But I haven't been able to sleep all the way through at night.because of this me and my family has thought about maybe given the dog to the pound. we really don't want to, but we are starting to run out of options. So if you can do a video about dogs whining in the cage. I will really appreciate that. I'm so glad I found your videos, I will start watching them more. Thank you and keep up the good. 😊😊👍👍

Great video! I've been working on duration work in an open crate and sometimes reward my 8mo mini labradoodle on her break command and now see how this is a problem - thanks!
My labradoodle has a really bad problem with destroying sheets/towels/toys. I've been wanting to get her meaty raw bones like you use but I'm concerned with contamination resulting from the dog eating these and running/lying around house.
Do you take any precautions after/before your dog eats a raw meaty bone?
Do you know of a good source for raw meaty bones?

I keep the dog confined to a towel or area when eating raw bones

True! one exception. Puppies first couple nights home, it’s not a big deal,?and I tell new puppy owners to expect that God awful malinois yodelling/screaming. I tell them, it won’t last past three nights and the dog will have no crate issues .. but so many puppy buyers fold! Boom! Puppy just won first battle of wills. I’ve even had pups sleeping quietly through night, before they’ve left and new owners still fold when pups screams. In all my years it never been a big deal to place 7-8 week old pup in crate, late at night and just walk away!

My pup is 6 mo GSD and for a week I tried to not crate train but crate untrain 😂. He is crate trained since 8 weeks. Now he’s done with chewing and housetrained I want him to sleep with us and spend less time in crate . But guess what , he is still glued to the crate. This is where he gets best sleep , deep sleep and like you said “ decompressed”. He is not ready to give up his crate ☹️, I’ll wait.

    Hi, Robert. You're awesome.
Question: My Boxer/German Pinscher, Marcie, is 16wks. We started by using a crate with a pen attached to it with a pee pad (before I started watching you) inside the pen. When she wasn't being watched 100%, tethered to one of us, or penned, she was in her crate. She began chewing up her pee pads so we removed it since she seemed potty trained after the first three days. Then she started peeing, sometimes pooping, in her pen.
We've been only crating her (skipping the pen) for about 1 1/2 to 2 weeks to break her from peeing inside since we mistakenly conveyed it's okay to pee/poop in the penned area.
What is the maximum time you would keep a puppy this age in the crate and what kind of progression do you use (hours per day over time)?
Giving the pen a shot again starting today, but still would like to know.
    Thanks for your work!

Question please, Labs are food and treat lovers they will do anything for a food treat - what if you have a Jack Russel that is not food friendly, no matter what it is, beef liver etc she would rather starve, feeding her or a treat is a lengthy battle?
