Yes, this is an outstanding performance of this song. She truly understands, acts, and gives it her own interpretation, such that I actually found a different way to understand the meaning of the piece. And, she takes the HIGH Note at the word "past" at 4:13 with a Belt that no other singer has been able to do, without wrecking it completely. Very impressive. Also, another extremely fine performance of this song, and arguably one of the best, is the performance by Liz Calloway. You can find it here on youtube, of course. And, the orchestra accompanying her is excellent. One of the Patti Lupone performances is way too fast and not in the same league, though I truly treasure her talent. Enjoy!!!!
@@verkaiking7450 I'd argue Judy Kuhn has never wrecked a thing in her life. Sir, please check the facts. Also..... Patti Lupone, and Betty Buckley, and Liz Callaway
I was so lucky to work with Lindsay on this song before most of her broadway career. An evening with Stephen Schwartz and he was in the audience. I believe the magic created that night led to her entire career.. and it was this song years before! Lindsay is an epic force I’ve known for at least 20 years. I got to music direct stuff in her childhood and it was such a treat... LINDSAY ROCKS!

I think I remember her singing this song when she went to high school with my sister at OCHSA. Actually I think that was the last time I heard this song almost 2 decades ago.
When I was a girl, I had a favorite story Of the meadowlark who lived where the rivers wind Her voice could match the angels in its glory But she was blind, the lark was blind An old king came and took her to his palace Where the walls were burnished bronze and golden braid And he fed her fruit and nuts from an ivory chalice and he prayed "Sing for me, my meadowlark Sing for me of the silver morning Set me free, my meadowlark And I'll buy you a priceless jewel And cloth of brocade and cruel And I'll love you for life if you will, sing for me" Then one day as the lark sang by the water The god of the sun heard her in his flight And her singing moved him so, he came and brought her The gift of sight, he gave her sight And she opened her eyes to the shimmer and the splendor Of this beautiful young god, so proud and strong And he called to the lark in a voice both rough and tender "Come along fly with me, my meadowlark Fly with me on the silver morning Past the sea where the dolphins bark We will dance on the coral beaches Make a feast of the plums and peaches Just as far as your vision reaches, fly with me" But the meadowlark said no for the old king loved her so She couldn't bear to wound his pride So the sun god flew away and when the king came down that day He found his meadowlark had died, every time I heard that part I cried And now I stand here, starry-eyed and stormy Oh, just when I thought my heart was finally numb A beautiful young man appears before me Singing, "Come, oh won't you come?" And what can I do if finally for the first time The one I'm burning for returns the glow If love has come at last it's picked the worst time Still I know I've got to go Fly away, meadowlark Fly away in the silver morning If I stay, I'll grow to curse the dark So it's off where the days won't bind me I know, I leave wounds behind me But I won't let tomorrow find me back this way Before my past once again can blind me, fly away And we won't wait to say goodbye My beautiful young man and I

When I arrived home, there was so much stuff ( not good), still happening, I didn't have time to listen to music. Today I was feeling nostalgic, and started to think about the songs I listened to while I was abroad. This was obviously one of them. I remembered a bird's name being in the title, thought it was cuckoo! Couldn't remember the name of the singer either, so I had a 'big job' googling US musical theatre female singers, knew if I saw the name I'd recognise it, but safe to say, her name didn't come up. Maybe not American. Then I googled songs from musicals with bird names in the title. Plenty of them, however, not this one! And now I can't remember how I got it, but I'm delighted to say, with much perseverance I did! Tears still welling up....

Revel Anthony no one responded? This is in E. I searched the top videos of this song on YT and most people do it in E, the standard key. I really want to hear it in different keys customized to each instrument 💜
I am sure many on here know this, but the character is actually singing about herself. She is the meadowlark. But, not having the entire show, in the context of when the song appears, does she realize this?
She just has a much darker tone and a wider vibrato than most musical theatre singers who usually have a much brighter tone. I thought the same thing the first time I saw her play Elphaba. It sounded like it had been lowered then I realized it was just her tone making it sound deeper. She's just incredible.
Love her voice and it was a great performance for a show, but on a purely musical performance i still prefer Sarah brightman's version-different style of performance-but what a wonderful song in General
This was nice but Sarah Brightman does this song the best justice vocally, emotionally and technically, just brilliant!! Like no other. The added operatic elements makes it extra special too.

Can it be wrong
If I burst into song
At the wonder of feeling the way
That I suddenly feel?
If I ever fall in love again
I shall know exactly what to do.
And when I fall in love again
I know it must be someone just like you.
The way that I suddenly feel!
If I ever fall in love again
I shall know exactly what to do.
And when I fall in love again
I know it must be someone just like you.

OH !!! I saw Lindsay in Carousel! How could I have forgotten. I completely didn't recognize her from her stage appearance. ~ Mark
Does anyone know what key this is in? This is perfectly in my range and I have an audition in a month!
Ps. My goodness I love Lindsay 😭
Revel Anthony no one responded? This is in E. I searched the top videos of this song on YT and most people do it in E, the standard key. I really want to hear it in different keys customized to each instrument 💜
Everytime I listen..she gives me Judy Garland vibes..unbelievably talented ..Best version I've heard..and I've HEARD most 😁
Would be amazing to have heard Judy sing it. ❤
Love Lindsay! But my favorite Meadowlark is Liz Callaway’s :-)
YES YES
Amen
Sensational! Also, who is this keyboard player? I would like to be married.
Don’t mind me: 2:58 - 4:32

Best singer ever….
The best female performance of this song. Period. Definitely better than (In my opinion) Patti.
I would argue best performance period. Are you thinking of a specific male performer that's better than her?
I really enjoyed the Andrew Rannels performance because I'd never heard a man do this. I like to respect that separately in it's own way!
Uhm for me Lindsay and Liz are tie for the best version of this song. Lindsay did it as a performance, Liz like telling a story.
Is the pilkington version on YT?
Liz Calloway was also great
I am sure many on here know this, but the character is actually singing about herself. She is the meadowlark. But, not having the entire show, in the context of when the song appears, does she realize this?
Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaas!!!!!!!
Is this in the original key?
It's in the original
Yeah its the original
It sounds lower because her technique is flawless. She makes this difficult song sound virtually effortless. Brava.
Why did the meadowlark die? Did the Sun God kill her because she told him "no"?
I think that's the implication.
This was nice but Sarah Brightman does this song the best justice vocally, emotionally and technically, just brilliant!! Like no other. The added operatic elements makes it extra special too.
It’s supposed to be belted tho. You’re incorrect.
WILLEMIJN VERKAIK SINGS THIS WAYYYYYYYYY BETTER! NO 1!
elisabeth nerolk ooh I gotta look that up
no
wait where's the question
I cringed so much watching her tongue and jaw tension!! It sounds fine but she's definitely pushing a little too hard haha.
Aaron Noriega Really? You cringed? Please post your rendition of this song, perfect and free of tongue and jaw tension. We'd all love to hear it!
@@andrewsawler777 Everyone's a damn critic !!
When I was a girl l I had a favorite story
Of the meadowlark who lived where the rivers wind
Her voice could match the angels' in its glory
But she was blind, the lark was blind
An old king came and took her to his palace
Where the walls were burnished bronze and golden braid
And he fed her fruit and nuts from an ivory chalice
And he prayed:
"Sing for me, my meadowlark,
Sing for me of the silver morning,
Set me free, my meadowlark,
And I'll buy you a priceless jewel
And cloth of brocade and crewel
And I'll love you for life,
If you will sing for me."
Then one day as the lark sang by the water
The god of the sun heard her in his flight
And her singing moved him so
He came and brought her the gift of sight
He gave her sight
And she opened her eyes to the shimmer and the splendor
Of this beautiful, young god, so proud and strong
And he called to the lark in a voice both rough and tender
"Come along.
Fly with me, my meadowlark,
Fly with me on the silver morning,
Past the sea where the dolphins bark
We will dance on the coral beaches,
Make a feast of the plums and peaches
Just as far as your vision reaches
Fly with me."
But the meadowlark said no
For the old king loved her so
She couldn't bear to wound his pride
So the sun god flew away
And when the king came down that day
He found his meadowlark had died
Every time I heard that part I cried
And now I stand here starry-eyed and stormy
Oh, just when I thought my heart was finally numb
A beautiful, young man appears before me,
Singing â??come, oh, won't you come?â??
And what can I do if finally for the first time
The one I'm burning for returns the glow?
If love has come at last it's picked the worst time
Still I know
I've got to go
Fly away, meadowlark
Fly away in the silver morning,
If I stay, I'll grow to curse the dark
So it's off where the days won't bind me
I know I leave wounds behind me
But I won't let tomorrow find me
Back this way
Before my past once again can blind me
Fly away
And we won't wait
To say good-bye
My beautiful young man
And I.
Thanks for the lyrics :)
