This has got to be one of the most amazing musical theatre tunes I've ever heard! I can't believe that it took three, four? decades for me to discover it! Thanks to Patti LuPone's current Don't Monkey With Broadway tour, I got to hear it in person last Saturday night.
The Baker's Wife has a wonderful story but she is definitely correct by saying that the book and everything else just didn't work, but the score itself is actually probably one of Schwartz's best, with this song probably being one of, if not THE, best composition of his career......plus Patti LuPone sounds the most open and free than she has on any other recording.
AWESOME! I've heard her sing this so many times but she always belts the entire song, (which I LOVE) but it's nice to hear it a little softer here... I LOVE THIS WOMAN!!!!
When I was a girl, I had a favourite story Of the meadowlark who lived where the rivers wind Her voice could match the angels' in its glory, But she was blind, The lark was blind. An old king came and took her to his palace, Where the walls were burnished bronze and golden braid, And he fed her fruit and nuts from an ivory chalice and he prayed "Sing for me, my meadowlark Sing for me of the silver morning. Set me free, my meadowlark And I'll buy you a priceless jewel, And cloth of brocade and crewel, And I'll love you for life if you will Sing for me." Than one day as the lark sang by the water The god of the sun heard her in his flight And her singing moved him so, he came and brought her The gift of sight, He gave her sight. And she opened her eyes to the shimmer and the splendour Of this beautiful young god, so proud and strong And he called to the lark in a voice both rough and tender, "Come along, Fly with me, my meadowlark, Fly with me on the silver morning. Past the sea where the dolphins bark, We will dance on the coral beaches, Make a feast of the plums and peaches, Just as far as your vision reaches, Fly with me." But the meadowlark said no, For the old king loved her so, She couldn't bear to wound his pride. So the sun god flew away and when the king came down that day, He found his meadowlark had died. Every time I heard that part I cried. And now I stand here, starry-eyed and stormy. Oh, just when I thought my heart was finally numb, A beautiful young man appears before me Singing "Come Oh, won't you come?" And what can I do if finally for the first time The one I'm burning for returns the glow? If love has come at last it's picked the worst time Still I know I've got to go. Fly away, meadowlark. Fly away in the silver morning. If I stay, I'll grow to curse the dark, So it's off where the days won't bind me. I know I leave wounds behind me, But I won't let tomorrow find me Back this way. Before my past once again can blind me, Fly away. And we won't wait to say goodbye, My beautiful young man and I. If I ever fall in love again If I ever fall in love again, It'll be with someone just like you. I don't say that I'm in love again But on the day you came my way, I knew. Haha no they had already been on again and off again and on again and off again by now this was after she left the acting company and they got together when they were still in Juilliard
It's sad that this show was not recorded with Topol, the original star a far superior singer to Paul Sorvino. I remember vividly when Topol appeared on a talk show and performed the jaw dropping first act finale [which might have been changed given the show's troubles]. I was so sad that the show did not make it to Broadway on the basis of that great number alone.
Very nice version of this song by Patti Lupone. But in my mind I try to imagine Judy Collins singing this song, it's her style of song, and i think she would do a great version of this song.
Judy Collins? Interesting. In a Judy Collins rendition, I expect we would lose the INTRICATE and SPECTACULAR DON WALKER ORCHESTRATIONS, which contribute exquisitely and powerfully to the emotional impact of the song. This has to have been an absolute joy for the orchestra to play.
Perhaps the quality of the recordings suffers from age and conversion to YT. I think the style is a bit dated in this recording but the performance is stunningly beautiful and pitch perfect to my ears.
its written like that and it's genius!!! Stephen captures so many emotions in the song with the notes on the score and the amazing Patti lupone has brought it to life with the ability to act with her vocal the emotions portrayed through the way she sings it - her technique and control is absolutely superb! not many artists now days can do that they are very few and far between!

At the wonder of feeling the way
That I suddenly feel?

If I ever fall in love again
I shall know exactly what to do.
And when I fall in love again

No, it isn't. The recordings for this took place in 1977, two years before Evita started its run on Broadway.
Is the beginning about Patti and Kevin Klines relashionship?😂
Haha no they had already been on again and off again and on again and off again by now this was after she left the acting company and they got together when they were still in Juilliard
Love Patti Lupone. Love this song. Sorry but i thought Wicked was obnoxious.
This recording is -after- Evita.
No.
It is not after Evita.
Ironically the worst version I've ever heard.
All of these recordings and videos are horrible. No one is singing it in tune and vocally correctly. Sorry.
Perhaps the quality of the recordings suffers from age and conversion to YT. I think the style is a bit dated in this recording but the performance is stunningly beautiful and pitch perfect to my ears.
Honestly, check your speakers and your ears. This recording is great and she's singing in tune.
its written like that and it's genius!!! Stephen captures so many emotions in the song with the notes on the score and the amazing Patti lupone has brought it to life with the ability to act with her vocal the emotions portrayed through the way she sings it - her technique and control is absolutely superb! not many artists now days can do that they are very few and far between!

Kristin Lidström sings it very well! Maybe try listening to her version
When I was a girl, I had a favourite story
Of the meadowlark who lived where the rivers wind
Her voice could match the angels' in its glory,
But she was blind,
The lark was blind.
An old king came and took her to his palace,
Where the walls were burnished bronze and golden braid,
And he fed her fruit and nuts from an ivory chalice and he prayed
"Sing for me, my meadowlark
Sing for me of the silver morning.
Set me free, my meadowlark
And I'll buy you a priceless jewel,
And cloth of brocade and crewel,
And I'll love you for life if you will
Sing for me."
Than one day as the lark sang by the water
The god of the sun heard her in his flight
And her singing moved him so, he came and brought her
The gift of sight,
He gave her sight.
And she opened her eyes to the shimmer and the splendor
Of this beautiful young god, so proud and strong
And he called to the lark in a voice both rough and tender,
"Come along,
Fly with me, my meadowlark,
Fly with me on the silver morning.
Past the sea where the dolphins bark,
We will dance on the coral beaches,
Make a feast of the plums and peaches,
Just as far as your vision reaches,
Fly with me."
But the meadowlark said no,
For the old king loved her so,
She couldn't bear to wound his pride.
So the sun god flew away and when the king came down that day,
He found his meadowlark had died.
Every time I heard that part I cried.
And now I stand here, starry-eyed and stormy.
Oh, just when I thought my heart was finally numb,
A beautiful young man appears before me
Singing "Come
Oh, won't you come?"
And what can I do if finally for the first time
The one I'm burning for returns the glow?
If love has come at last it's picked the worst time
Still I know
I've got to go.
Fly away, meadowlark.
Fly away in the silver morning.
If I stay, I'll grow to curse the dark,
So it's off where the days won't bind me.
I know I leave wounds behind me,
But I won't let tomorrow find me
Back this way.
Before my past once again can blind me,
Fly away.
And we won't wait to say goodbye,
My beautiful young man and I.
