    the top and bottom plates
    have such a gentle curve over the supports, along with the grain direction, makes for an easy bend .

    I made the crank...heated and bent some steel and welded ends on!!

    Absolutely Beautiful! I muted the sound and played Hurdy Gurdy music instead and almost cried! LOL!

    The axle can be, say, 8mm with bearings to fit. A bearing in the wheel and two to support each 'end' of the axle. The handle can be a length of 5mm for example set into a hole drilled through the axle(superglue or soldered in)
    Hope that helps. Mike

    hi...you can use either cello or violin strings...there are specific gurdy strings obtainable from The Early Music shop here in uk. ....not sure of the box length as i dont have it nearby but it was built to the plan and works fine.

    they are both glued in place! the front or top (... and the back) are glued over the ribs which are curved. The one by the wheel is shaped and fitted and the rest worked out from that to give a gradual slope to the peg end.
    Hope this helps....please ask again for any more info. mike

  • @chrismcagle

    Is this from a kit? If so, which one? If it's scratch built, do you have plans to follow or instructions? I'm VERY interested in making a hurdy gurdy, but can't find a good resource. Also, I don't have a lot of money to spend.

    Very nice build. The tangents are very interesting. How did you attach the wood to the tubing? Ingenious.

    • @mjlyam
      @mjlyam  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi... Thanks for watching. As you can probably see in one picture I made the tangents as one long strip before cutting them off to make individual ones. The wood is just epoxied onto the brass tube then shaped as single tangents. Seems to hold OK. Mike

    After 3 months, hi again! Hurdy gurdy is almost finished but I have some problems about the wheel. The wheel has some wobble, the wobble cannot be seen and not possible to understand it by touching. When the crank is turned, you can understand by looking the move of the wheel. ( Wheel is made of maple ) I tried to make it round with chisel and sandpaper but it still has wobble.
    Also I didn't use the layer around the wheel. I cant get enough information about it, is it necessary to use and which material is used for that layer?

    • @jesusernestozeferino3831
      @jesusernestozeferino3831 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to give it shape with a lathe. The mark your lathe will make on the wood will be the center of the entire wheel. Place it on your hurdy-gurdy following that mark. Don't lose it or you'll have to make it again.

  • @mjlyam
    @mjlyam  7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Guevedoce....as long as the edge is smooth and you use resin/rosin it should be ok. I used a maple strip because the wheel was a softer material. When it "wobbles" is it up and down on the rim or side to side.? The main string passes over a bridge and as long as it doesn't affect that it might not matter. The drones will just vary in pitch or tone slightly......in my opinion!! We'll done for getting to this stage . mike

    • @Guevedoce
      @Guevedoce 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We have found out the problem. The reason of wobble is hole of the wheel wasn't perpendicular, so we filled the hole and redrilled it. Now there is just side to side wobble but not that much and as you said it doesn't affect melody strings.
      Thanks for advice!
