Planter's Punch | How to Drink

- The Planter's Punch is the foundational formula for a great number of Tiki Drinks, but it's also got its roots in oppression, genocide and slavery.
**********************************
One of Sour, two of sweet, three of strong, four of weak- or so the old rhyme goes. That's the roots formula for this drink, the Planter's Punch, and even though the Planter's Inn in Charleston South Carolina lays claim to the creation of this drink, there's almost no way that could possibly be true. The version I'm presenting here is a roots version pulled from the pages of the fantastic Smuggler's Cove by Martin Cate, not the gussied up version served by Trader Vic or Don the Beachcomber. It's a delicious drink, perfect for the dog days of summer, refreshing and cool and honestly perfect. I declare it The Drink of Summer in fact! But there's no way in hell it was "invented" at the Planter's Inn. Watch the video for more!
Planter's Punch
1 oz. or 30 ml. Lime Juice
.75 oz. or 22 ml. Demerara Syrup
.25 oz. or 8 ml. AllSpice Dram
3 oz. or 90 ml. Jamaica Rum
Two Dashes Angostura Bitters
Shake over ice
open pour
garnish with mint

Hey, dude, I was wondering what days we can expect your videos to be out because I love watching them! /
Loved it! And I actually have the ingredients for this one already. Quick question: What glass bottles do you use? I like how slim they are, and if I get them from you I know they work with the pourers!
Yes riffs episode. Make amazing versions of this drink!!!
watching your vids is what its like to chew five gum
Pronounced 'Kah-Rib-Ee-Uhn'. I used to live down there...
Who makes and drinks tiki at 3am?!
Greg: It’s tiki time.
*DON BEACH:* Vic! Light Beer has escaped! Mix some Tiki Drinks with attitude!
Oh boy, 3 am!!!
I may have done this....
It’s 3am in the mornin’
Put my keep in the door and….
Try an "Off the Shelf" episode using the cheap stuff for those who live in hick towns and don't have access to the good stuff.
I agree! Maybe give us some interpretations of previous drinks you've done using more readily available alcohols. It's hard to find the vast majority of what you're using out here in the "sticks".
Agreed. I don't think I've made more than maybe 1 or 2 of the last 10-15 drinks or so on this channel, mostly because the ingredients are just too hard to find or you need to make them yourself. Or the drink is some kind of gimmicky thing from an obscure show with Trinidad chilies, nectar of the corpse flower, anchovies, llama spit and cask strength 35yr rum aged in sherry casks from Belaruse, that is impossible to find, but a necessity in the drink.
Aww Brandon there is Amazon you could get the good stuff =)
@@DoneFinEnd I think most places in the US dont let you buy liquor from places like Amazon. I know I can't in WA.
And call it the mcguyver episode lol, where Greg has nothing but some booze and a paperclip and makes a fully functional drinks cabinet out of it..
"How it feels to chew Five Gum"
Shit, Tasting Notes, that one got me.
me too man
Same.
As much as I love Greg, this episode really highlighted for me the people "behind the camera" who did an amazing job on researching this drink, as well as provided the excellent editing.
Why do I get the feeling that Gregg practices saying ‘It’s Tiki Time!’ In the mirror every morning?
Is it practice if he's making Tiki Drinks after saying it?
@@vampire847 Sure it is.
Grose attests "Punch" from at least 1788 (from his "A Classical Dictionary Of The Vulgar Tongue") - A liquor called by foreigners Contradiction, from its being composed of spirits to make it strong, water to make it weak, lemon juice to make it sour, and sugar to make it sweet." Great book, if you're interested in slang and "cant" and original of common words.
I live in/am from Charleston and never knew the Planter’s Inn claims to have invented this. You’re truly an educator, good sir!
You are the only channel I watch 100% of. I have yet to miss a video and every single one is so good. Bless us Greg.
This show just wouldn’t work without you man. No one else could host it
You should make your own cocktail book. Including the wierd tasting notes!
For a great many people they hear "rum" and think of the British Navy, or maybe Captain Jack Sparrow. One of the most underappreciated spirits, and it warms my heart that you embraced Tiki, which is a monument to that finest of funky refreshments. My plastic flask of Lamb's Palm Breeze is calling, have a great weekend!
Me i like some bacardi 151 straight up room temperature:)
There needs to be a random cocktail generator using that poem. Just has lists of ingredients appropriate to the 4 categories and spits out random combinations.
Magpie James To the JavaScript Console I go!
You are the Alchemist of Alcohol....I would also like to give you props on always bringing the humor & history...one of my favorite TH-cam channels and I don’t even drink ...shows how fantastic your content is......keep up the great work!
I’m not even old enough to drink and yet I watch this channel religiously. Love the old school vibe, mixed in with whatever fun theme happens to surround the drink. Keep up the good work man.
Planters.. why did my brain go straight to peanut cocktails?
I thought bananas 🤤
There is a whole episode from the original version of "Good Eats" regarding the sour sweet strong weak poem
Season 13 episode 6, "feeling punchy."
And Alton Brown uses tea instead of water as the weak part.
He does another episode where he makes allspice dram
I always look forward to your tasting notes. Gives a good chuckle every time I see them
while i generally enjoy jamaican rum a bit more than barbados rum, i really think you can't go wrong with a traditional barbados rum punch. 1:2:3:4 specs - lime, sugar syrup, barbados rum, and ice, plus like 4 dashes of angostura and garnish with fresh grated nutmeg. the nutmeg is super key to the flavor profile-and drink it from the glass, not with a straw. the way i've seen it done, you build a big batch and let it marry overnight then pour over cubed ice so tiny ice chips don't get in the way like they would with crushed or cracked. but i'm not bajan, so maybe my assessment is slightly off.
Nick Dank I had my first experience with this style in St. Lucia on my honeymoon. They called it St Lucia rum punch but it’s literally the same recipe. The nutmeg is a wonderful addition. That drink is what sent me down the rum rabbit hole
@@nickentros kinda same for me...prior to having rum punch in barbados i had only had captain morgan and bacardi in rum & cokes. it's been a long time since then, and i've now got a bar at home fully stocked with 6-10 different rums at any time, plus homemade falernum and pimento dram so i can get as tiki as i please haha
Man, this drink is so perfect. Love this stuff.
Also "we're a great show!" Yes you are Greg. Yes you are.
I went on a tour of the Appleton Estate rum factory. They gave us all the rum punch we wanted...and got to taste each of the varieties. Anytime I see the brand now....I have find memories of that trip!!!
Your tasting note list never fails to make me laugh a little. Mostly because it's exactly how I think and would word those things. Keep doing you, dude. You're doing great.
Oh man! Just seeing that you posted this today! AWESOME !
hey i hope that you see this but i really support this channel. you truly make my day with the episodes, take pride :)
It's currently 101 degrees outside in Florida, this drink hit the spot! I'm currently sipping it in my hammock in the shade. Thanks Greg! 💜
Love the editing on this channel - feels like I'm sitting in a lecture with a goofy friend making comments 'bout the guy up front
"Intergalactic, planetary"
Tasting notes keep on getting better and better.
@1:12 "Did they have taps...? Well water." - This is part of why I love this show so much. This is me every time I get a buzz on and try to explain something. So relatable.
Aaaaaaa highlighted comment! WE'RE NOT WORRRRTHY 🙌
We use that rhyme here in Barbados for traditional Bajan rum punch.
We usually put grated nutmeg on top
i am forever in love with whoever does the on-screen tasting notes
Thanks for the Thor: Ragnarok reference, made me laugh out loud even more than your episodes usually do. 😆
Thanks for pitting a smile on my face...I needed it.
I've heard the rhyme referred to how English sailors used to make punch, taken from the Hindi word for the number five. One part sour (limes), two parts sweet (demerara sugar), three of strong (Batavia), and four of weak (Earl Grey tea), plus spice (nutmeg), coming to five, in total.
Holy shit. How did I forget about Smuggler's Cove?! I'm sitting 6 blocks away right now. I might have to swing by after work this evening...
Thanks for reminding me about shit that should have never escaped my mind in the first place!
Listen carefull after 2:40 as he turns toward the camera. Sandals, has to be. That foot squeak. Its a big table, probably boxers, and sandals under there. Why? Cus.. I would too.
Greg in boxers and an apron mixing tiki drinks...yeah, that's mental imagery we needed. Thanks.
Ima need more rum.
He has a crew there, doubt this much. Sandals sure but not the latter.
Your editor is hilarious, love this show, love the drinks.
Years ago I was in Colonial Williamsburg, they were serving a drink they called punch which was rum, sugar, water & lemon juice. They had another they called punch royale which was lime juice instead of the lemon juice. The menu said you could have it made with your favorite spirit. I ordered a bourbon punch royale and the waiter seemed energized with how much he liked taking that order. I had a couple and my wife who is not a whiskey drinker sipped it and liked it so much she ordered her own.
“Intergalactic Planetary” really killed me lol I love the sense of humor
True to the rhyme: 1/2 oz lime juice, 1 oz gardenia mix, 1.5 oz plantation 5 year rum, and 2 ounces of ginger beer( can sub 1 oz seltzer and 1 oz ginger beer to dial it back) YOU'RE WELCOME PEOPLE! I call it the "Pearl Down Under"
I came across this elsewhere, and wanted to see how Greg made one. I tried one using the classic 3-2-1, but also added one dash of orange bitters and a splash of dry curacao. Fantastic.
Planters Punch is my favorite, and i have been waiting for this one for a long time
I busted the fuck out laughing, the ONE time the close-up macro visuals are fucked, with ice falling out. So clean, so close-up, then messssssssssssss, with a lovely caption. Thank you.
Another fantastically entertaining episode!! Just wanted to say thank you for your inspiration, you are the reason I've started my own bartending business and it has been the best time of my life!
I've had that book for years!!! It's one of the many bar books we have at home. There's some fun drinks in Smuggler's Cove.
Legit one of my all time fav! Well done mate now I have to make myself one. Cheers!
seriously who gives the thumbs down on Gregs videos?
Greg -
Speaking of summer, it would be great it you did an episode on large batch cocktails and punch bowl recipes for parties.
Here is a simple harsh recipe: have all your friends come to your house, have a brand new never used plastic tub that is closed in no holes in it, then have each friend bring at least 150 ml of hard liquors and liqueurs, add some chopped up fresh fruit and just mix it all together with ice, trashcan punch:)
Perfect Poolside drink down here in Florida! Love this drink!
❤❤❤ Woooo hoo new vid!!
..... in the distance, he heard the native Drams calling, beckoning him to come and drink........
I just made this and it’s sooooooo good! I’ll be drinking these till Christmas!
idk why I watch these, alcohol makes me sick. but I still really enjoy these videos
4:46 Not only is Greg's spill game on point, he continues to push it to the next level
You were preachin' the gospel in this one man.
Awesome work again Greg! Had allspice dram been available to buy in my country, I would make this drink tomorrow. In the meanwhile, I made your/Dead Rabbit's Irish Coffee tonight for me and my mom, and even dad who hates coffee thought it was pretty good! Keep up the awesome job!!!
First again! 😂
In all seriousness, great to see a new upload man.
I've always made my planters punch with orange juice while reducing the simple syrup its soo good
Sounds like an excellent drink you've inspired me to look up Tiki drink recipes and I will definitely give that one to try first loving the show man keep it up
If you have any suggestions on where to find Tiki drink recipes I would love to hear them
Just got off work and I need this in my life, stat. Nicely done!
I am enjoying the Tiki drinks series!
video posted at 10am? Am I drinking at 10am? Possibly... :^)
Is it morning? Then it's time to drink!
Dammit, Greg, I told myself I didn't need anymore appleton estate, and here you go posting this video. Oh, well... time to start drinking.
Been waiting for you to do this! This is my number 2 drink, only beaten out by a Mai Tai.
I would love to see an episode your take on variations on the Planter's Punch formula. From personal experience, I used the formula once for a whiskey punch. It was a real hit at the party I brought it to.
Went to our first Portland Tike bar - never got this far down the classics list on an amazing drink menu (Hale Pele). I need to say - a few weeks ago, I went looking for Smith & Cross online. Not at any OLCC store in the state. Then - lo and behold, shops started carrying it as of Tuesday. Now I get "banana funk". Delicious in a Painkiller #3.
I have watched your channel for some time now. I finally broke down and bought a good bottle of rum and tried it out. You don’t realize how much of this drink is just straight booze tell you are poring it into the mixer. I enjoyed the drink greatly however in the future I’m going to put a little less rum in so I can drink more then one.
Definitely have to get my hands on some good rum and start mixing tiki-style cocktails! Cheers Greg!
The mint belonged there! I feel I can envision how that tastes from the looks. It's a color of beverage I like.
Bless you editor who writes the tasting notes
I'm loving this Tiki Series!! If you ever come out to California, hit me up! I'll take you to the Tonga Hut (LAs oldest Tiki Bar)!!
Here’s my summer punch I’ve been making this year...
Cognac 30ml
Aged Rum 30ml
Giffard Peach Liqueur 15ml
Lemon Juice 22.5ml
Orgeat 15ml
Dash of angostura
Shaken strained over ice in a pint glass
Topped with 4oz of Lemon Shandy
I recently made a cocktail with this "recipe" that was delicious. 1 part acid adjusted grapefruit, 2 part black tea and mulling spice infused Demerara syrup, 1.5 part OFTD Rum, 1 part Lebon cachaça, half part Campari, 2-3 parts water (the rest of dilution I save for the ice), and a few dashes of Fee Brothers Cardamom Bitters.
I have been to smuggler’s cove! Really interesting atmosphere and great drinks (obviously). Their cocktails inspired me to start using velvet falernum, good stuff.
Loads of places across the Caribbean finish off their punches with a light sprinkle of nutmeg across the top right before serving.
Also, there are a number of versions that use tea as part of "the weak" (in addition to ice).
I don't care what anyone says, there is definitely an art to making drinks.
CHILLS at the “It’s tiki time” intro 😭😭😍 TIKI-DESI-FAVORITE 🤤
And one of my favorite and most used books on my shelf, thanks to you!
That book is a dangerous gateway drug. I would know, I made the drink along with you.
An episode on a bunch of planter's punch variations would be great!
Dude. We're early. Love the channel and my buddy and I are big fans. Gonna make Dole Whips next weekend!!!
Smugglers Cove is super close to people I know, definitely going to have to check it out
I love the music analogy
Variation videos would be awesome! Love the history of the Old Fashioned video.
Liked and appreciated, great video .
I love rum. I'll need to try this one.
Great video the drink looks amazing 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
Oh my Christ the Bajan rhyme/mnemonic is the best thing ever.
I use this formula to make "Iced Tea" for my family picnic every year, each part being 750ml, the sour being Lime Juice, and the "weak" being black tea. Needless to say, the family always asks if I'm bring "tea" and I seldom have leftovers...
also, tagged in /r/tiki
This sounds fantastic, I might need to try it this weekend.
Snagged from Alton Brown: 1 part lime, 2 parts demerara (I have recently started using demerara gum syrup for this), 3 parts rum (Not spiced works better, but pick something flavorful), and 4 parts black tea (Not Earl Grey, Irish Breakfast worked good this year). I'll also throw in frozen lime hulls to keep cold but not dilute, or just freeze all them in a block for color/presentation. I big clear dispenser with a bottom tap looks nice.
Really delicious. I tried it with one dash of orange bitters and one dash of angostura.
I knew grabbing a bottle of pimento dram would serve me well. Looking forward to making this :D
That's roughly how I make my grog, just lime as opposed to lemon. Very cool, thank you.
Had an idea you might be interested in: Are you familiar with the song Alligator Wine by Screamin' Jay Hawkins? Might make a good October episode, being as he's got alot of Halloween swagger about him.
I propose making a drink equivalent to the Alligator Wine recipe:
Take the blood out of an alligator (blood orange?)
Take the left eye out of a fish (olive? or maybe lychee?)
Take the skin off of a frog (lime peel?)
And mix it all up in a dish
Add a cup of grease (I always thought he was saying "green" though) swamp water (IDK, some sorta booze)
Then count from one to nine
Spit over your left shoulder (probably intended to spit in the Devil's eyes, like the spilled salt superstition)
You got Alligator Wine
You know Greg, you're right. This Is a good show :D
that intro was a gut punch to my bad mood, perfect timing lol
As always, clever production and fascinating recipes. Amateur you are not.
I have to stop just watching and star mixing because that looked delicious.
Love what you did with the notes. XD
It would be neat if you did the Shirley Temple with and without alcohol. :)
Another stellar ep dude
Never heard of this one, but it sounds amazing! I'd give it a try this weekend but I'm not sure how easy the allspice dram would be to find.
God, the editor was on a roll on this episode!
Fantastic as always :)
A video I would be interested in by you, maybe as a chasers episode: homestyle drink making vs. Bar style drink making.
I cater friend's birthday parties a few times a year for fun, and it's kinda tough after a few hours when you run out of prepped stuff.
Also regarding speed, at home I don't care about the time it takes to make my drink, but with guests, I guess even in a high end bar you don't want to wait 5 minutes for your drink. Even though you never worked in a bar maybe you have some ideas there. Anyways, thanks for the recipe, cheers
Bought the book because of this video. Was a good call.
