This has been a great voyage through classic tiki cocktails. I am trying to come up with a few standards for my bar. This has been really helpful.

We’re on the same wavelength...just made this for the 1st time this weekend. Changed 2 things. Increase each rum by 50%, then ad 1/4 oz. pineapple gum syrup. Damn fine stuff!

I've really enjoyed your journey through these classic tiki cocktails. It's helped a lot of people get through the days of Covid lockdowns I'm sure. However, we have got to work on your ability to drink the occasional shot of rum.

@@BreezewayCocktailHour That's a great idea, I've made my own orgeat, tastes so much better than store bought stuff. I used the recipe from the Total Tiki app.

I think an orange wheel would work depending on what else you're using. I've used a sprig of mint, a lime wheel and some expensive ass cherries, and the lime wheel kinda disappeared into the mint. It just seemed like it needed a little bit more color to pop out from the mint.

    • @BreezewayCocktailHour
      @BreezewayCocktailHour  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Wade ah, good thinking. Expensive ass cherries!! Right??

@@BreezewayCocktailHour But the cool thing, the syrup they're in makes a good secret ingredient. I know Beachbum Barry said it's an old tiki bartender trick, and there are couple drinks in the Grog Log that use it. And I was messing with a Daiquiri recipe that used it, and it was just enough to make it a little different where you know that taste, but you don't know what it is.

    A few recommended changes:
    1. Use the Appleton 12 as the Jamaican Gold Rum
    2. Use Cruzan Single Barrel vs. Cruzan Diamond
    3. Use 1/4 oz Meyers and 1/'4 oz Coruba for Jamaican Dark Rum
    4. Only use mint as the garnish
This mixture propels the Donn the Beachcomber !937 Planter's Punch into the stratosphere...

My opinion, garnish for the senses, sight and smell, if you can match ingredients to a garnish, start there and work your way up

I am not sure that I would be upset with an elaborate garnish. It’s like a snack to go with the drink. But aesthetically, it could be distracting.

I found this drink a bit too rummy (and small) for my taste. The small spicyness from the Ango and Falernum was interesting. I'll give it 75%.

Where exactly the Planter's Punch was invented I do not know. But there's a zero chance it was created to cool off plantation workers in Jamaica. First, alcohol is the worst thing to drink in very hot weather. It actually makes exposure worse (in cold weather too).
Second, the idea that concern for the health of plantation workers in Jamaica was on the plantation owner's minds is absurd. Read up on the conditions of those workers. Though it did improve after emancipation, during slavery it was considered cheaper to work slaves to death and replace them (6 to 9 years life expectancy), than to spend money on medical care, proper food, or even sufficient sleep.
It might have come from some plantation, but it would surely be a drink for the owner class, and not for workers.
Oh, and the recipe is a heck of a lot simpler too. Lime, sugar, rum, water. (1, 2, 3, and 4 parts - in that order.)
