The two biggest problems with our prison system is overcrowding and lack of staff. There are far too many people in prison and the system cannot cope. Because of this there is no effective rehabilitation, most prisoners just end up doing their time and eventually being released without anything being done to help them to stop re-offending. The government and the courts need to realise this and stop sending people to prison for minor offences where other more suitable measures are available. I am surprised that many more people do not die in prison, it is a very dangerous place to be mostly due to lack of staff, prisoners are often locked in their cells for 22 or 23 hours every day, and this frustration is what forces them to try drugs to help pass the time, prisoners need help, not just being locked up, help them to learn new skills, help them to stop offending, provide them with the skills they need to lead lawful lives once released. But none of this is happening.
I'm a PCO down there and I'm glad I've still there because when Sodexo got the contract they made a great number of officers redundant (mainly dog handlers) so I'm glad i managed to keep my job.
Taxpayers and crime victims pays, risk capitalists get the money and the inmates are just raw materials for the prison-industry :-) It is lika bad dream.
Correctional 'services' should not be run by a profit motive. Inevitably it will lead to far higher incarceration rates with less security, fewer resources for rehabilitation and higher rates of recidivism. People who run correctional services should answer to us, via government, not shareholders.
Look at how Sweden and Switzerland do their prisons and jails, need to have therapy rehabilitation and skills to help the inmates . More staff and more pay for the staff, more art and exercise programs, gardens and ability to earn degrees . Help once outside with housing and re-habitation. Less crowding and more environmentally friendly jails and prisons with gardens and relaxing spaces for inmates who behave well and are in programs
I worked for sodexo as a chef many years ago and it was a shambles.. corrupt management... very low paid staff with zero motivation... and an attitude of your not happy the door is over their..

Spent many a year there they send mattresses from the outside into the jail to be chopped up with all kinds of blades and scissors,recycled and sold on for shit money. They paid us £12 a week. Took months to find out where the mattresses came from but it happened. From machete to iPads to any drug under the sun to boxing gloves and mitts. It now recycles CDs instead. The job you did for the money you got was pathetic so you have to make your own or you go hungry and stressed,but for a prison it's a lot better then say Wandsworth,now that's a cesspool of despair,over 30 languages spoke fuck that

Sodexo are a joke, not sure if they still do but when I was in they ran the cook house on army barracks in the UK and the food was absolute crap, the worst quality ingredients some of which was mouldy and well past its sell by date.

the bad thing about this is i went for a fitness test and a interview at this prison fuck me im glad i didnt get the job there was a line of 10 of us getting escorted from the prison gym the the exit and all we heard was chanting from what the PCO's call 'residents' NOT inmates was paedos and they werent told to shut up all the PCO's done were laugh and said when the fitness test was underway we were told if any RESIDENT was to come in and cause trouble WE were to gang up and pin them to the floor until THE CAVALRY arrived what a joke sodexo should have the contract taken away

Im me old life ive bin in HMP an a private prison in Liverpool an the private jail was a joke i seen more spice in there than on the streets, at least in HMP the prisoners are locked behind the door, in the private the spend about 5 hours on the wing, enough time to do all the dealing an drug taking they want, so glad ive left all that shit behind me

Having been in prison, the rot has already set in. The cutbacks are making things worst, and I dare say the morale of the staff is at an all time low.

I've been to that jail many times... I was lucky enough to get released in 2013 before the privatisation properly kicked in.
