‘Screws’ follows a group of newly recruited prison officers through training at the country’s most controversial jail: HMP Belmarsh in South East London. Known as Britain’s ‘Guantanamo Bay’ or ‘Hellmarsh’, the Prison Service’s flagship institution is notoriously secretive. This is the first time Belmarsh’s governors have allowed cameras to follow their officers in training and at work.
With the highest prison population in Western Europe, Britain’s prisons are reaching bursting point. Nearly a third of all prisoners are from ethnic minorities, but less than 5% of officers are. The Prison Service is desperate to adjust the balance. Having lowered the entry requirements, now they are taking all comers and getting all sorts.
Prior to joining, new recruits are not even interviewed. The only requirement for a job behind bars is a clean criminal record. Today’s recruits are fast tracked into uniform, and hurled headlong through an intense training regime.
The class of 2004 is meant to represent a new generation of screws. A Moroccan bus driver (Mustapha Bouker), a 47 year old Hindu civil servant (Jaya Karir), a young Jamaican single mother (Sharifa Wade) and a 21 year old bachelor embarking on his first job (Jamie Barker) are among the group of 8 starting out. For most of them, prison is a completely alien territory. They soon learn it’s an intimidating world of menace and discipline, rules and political correctness.

I was a Prison Officer for nearly 30 years. I've seen a lot of changes, and a lot of things, people would only see in nightmares. The average life expectancy of a Prison Officer following retirement, is 18 months to 2 years. If that is the case, I have about 3 weeks to live. 😂
If anyone has watched this, and still think they could do this job, don't. If you have a family, are an easy going, laid back person, don't. The Prison Service will, change you as a person. I have, in 30 years, been involved in some horrific incidents, seen many dead bodies, of which, some have used the most horrendous ways imaginable, in which to kill themselves. I now suffer with severe PTSD, and find it difficult to trust, even my closest friends.
Contrary to popular misconceptions, Prison Officers do have compassion and heart, and are not all bullies, who think the uniform is a Superman suit. There are many documentaries out there, but nothing, nothing will ever prepare you, for this job. If you value your sanity, stay well away.
agrafes6 yes guv. Spent a lot of time inside and the change's that are going on throughout the whole system are catastrophic. The only bad time i've personally ever had on a wing is the induction wings. The rest of my time was spent going to the gym,working and getting stoned. Only thing missing was a woman. Had all kinds of technology. The screws in Northumberland (once off the induction wing) mostly just let us do what we want as long as we went to work they let us be. There were blades and shanks stashed all over the wings phones, pads,computers,shops and poker. Never had any real bother with staff bar induction they show you respect and they get the same back

agrafes6 , well said i was locked up in Belmarsh in 2012 on Houseblock 1 , the officers do a good job there in a strict regime , i found only a couple of arrogant cocky screws there . And many so serious murderers and true wrong uns there . I have a lot of respect for the screws there as they did not put any of us there . It opened my eyes as to what a difficult job they do . Its a highly dangerous place and if your ok to them they will treat you properly . Every high profile terrorist is there and every high profile killer is there. Also Mustafa the new screw i know from there , a very decent man i felt . Always good to me he was .

What's not being clearly stated here is that correctional officers who "can't cut it" are a danger to both themselves and their fellow employees. Diversity should never trump genuine fitness for the job.

Yeah agreed - being fit/qualified for the position and having potential should come first before anything else. Fair enough if you choose someone who'd improve diversity over someone else with most else being equal, but why not improve performance rather than reducing standards(?)
I’d not be cut out for it. I got depression issues and don’t handle stress well. Plus I get bored easily in jobs. I’d end up being a liability

What do you think the assessments are if not an interview. They go through many assessments, physical trials and medicals before they start Officer training, which is some time before they are sent out to prisons.
It's not like this in 2017. It's a 3 step recruitment process which includes physical tests, role plays, maths tests, and an interview if you get through all of that. Maybe they realised this approach wasn't working too well.

@@pivottech8881 She worked on houseblock the lifers block when I was on there , a soft woman but it was not too bad for her as most were on huge sentences and the worst houseblock was 2 with all the plastic gangsters

@@ptrekboxbreaks5198 No idea as left in 2012 , but she was well ok on the lifers block , houseblock 1 . She was ok like most of the other screws on that block back then . A very tough job to do . Many cons were in the papers and on national TV when I was there .
A prison officer once told me that the biggest problem he faced in the service is the small minority of staff that shouldn’t be in the job. After watching this I now understand what he means.
The biggest problem in Prisons is the management (Governor grades), the officers working by Home Office rules tell the inmates no and the Governors then OK it

For centuries the qualification was being white so what is the issue. In Germany prison officers have a two year training course trained in psychology the Germans aim to rehabilitate prisoners

Served for 34 years in all ranks and appointed to Governor grade for the last 9 years. Applied to join August 1962 and had to pass the Civil Service entrance exam, a full medical and several interviews before training starting at the Prison Service Training School. Had a 6 month and 12 months probation report and interview. Officers could (and regularly were) dismissed at any time during training and probation. I have a family member still in the Service and he is disgusted with both the selection, training and standard of the current recruits. I have been retired for 25 years and am proud to have served but feel sad at the way the Service has gone.
How to staff it though when inmates are increasing and more and more staff are needed?

I can understand them trying to be more diverse there's no harm in it but they need to be just as trained

Its good training because we all need to get along within this job with all types of people. Actually it’s very good. It takes all types to make a world.

What is her problem? She hurt the male officer, not the other way around. If the roles had been reversed, the male officer would have got it in the neck.

I also served 30 years in this job working at various jails.I learnt not to over analyse incidents and left my work behind at the gate.Mostly I enjoyed my job,good colleges and job security,had about 30 days sick in the whole of my service,never assaulted and don’t regret joining,no ptsd and happy memories.

Fair play mate. I was like you in my work. I was never on the sick for 20 years. Up until 3 year ago at our team brief 2 lads were retiring. One was like us ,never on the sick. The other had at least 6-8 weeks a year sick. They both got the same handshake & well wishes off the manager and sent on their way with a bottle of wine or whiskey I cant remember. This made me think you are just a number. One lad has 2 month extra holiday a year for 40 year and is treated the same and gets the same wages as someone who is barely or never off. Who has been the fool? Me, for 20 year. I now have a few weeks a year sick myself different weeks and months of course. Nothing has been said and I still bet paid. Happy days.
@@S.Hitchcock yep, saw the same, staff would have up to a couple of years on the sick because of “assaults” paid their wages average overtime and most had insurance for work related sickness so were actually better off not being at work.A lot of staff took advantage of this situation as they were never challenged or investigated.

Unfortunately all new staff from 2019 r young, majority look like they have just left school, even the young 20yr old females, so innocent and sweet.. Prison need the old school screws that are alot elder and game.. Experienced staff left after pay cuts wer introduced, wasn't worth the risk thats a part of this job..

As dangerous as these men are, hearing the man speak at his hearing about the broken TV and watching the guards handle the men on the yard, it reminds me of dealing with small kids. It seems almost like a high security, extremely dangerous preschool.
Lots of them have never learned proper coping skills. It's sad!

That's basically what prison is in the UK, Your punishment is losing your freedom, the prison is meant to rehabilitate you, reeducate you.
I worked in HMP Brixton with that young black female officer, she did not last long, was under investigation as she knew quite a few inmates, turns out she was recruited by some kind of gang to infiltrate the prison system, from the first day I met her in Induction and she was talking to a fellow officer in earshot of prisoners that she was about to have breast augmentation and that her father was paying for it I knew she would not last long, the African officer is a lovely guy still working at HMP Brixton, so glad to have got out of the prison service after 11 years in 2015!

A prisoner DID escape about 20 years ago---he just walked out of the visitors room with the other visitors and solicitors and went home,thats where he was arrested the next day watching Coronation st !!! FACT !

I did ten years as a Prison officer and I just caught the end of the old school method.
The standard of people they’re recruiting now is an utter embarrassment. The turnover of staff is astronomical, proof in itself that the recruitment focus on ethnics and women is a disaster.

This was a really interesting watch. Not sure I could do that. I would be constantly paranoid surrounded by that many dangerous criminals. Kudos to the staff that carrry out this job keeping everyone safe!
Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.
He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, life isn’t always fair, and maybe it was my fault. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don’t spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting (adults, not children, are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned, but overbearing, regulations were set in place.
Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate, teenagers suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition. Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job they had themselves failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer paracetamol, sun lotion or plaster to a pupil, but could not inform the parents when a pupil became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.
Common Sense lost the will to live as churches became businesses and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn’t defend yourself from a burglar in your own home, but the burglar could sue you for assault because you protected yourself and your own.
Common Sense finally passed away after a 7-year-old child was suspended from school for chewing a Pop Tart into the shape of a gun.
Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust, his wife, Discretion, his daughter, Responsibility and his son, Reason. He is survived by three stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, Someone Else is to Blame, and I’m A Victim. Not many attended his funeral because so few realized that he was gone.
If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

Yeah that older lady is just not suited she gets all giggly whenever she gets nervous and if she does that to the wrong person it won't go well especially if they have nothing to lose already. She's just far too timid, I haven't finished watching yet but if she makes it through training I would be surprised if she stayed long at all.

I worked in prisons as a nurse, we had to go through extensive training too - including C&R, I still remember my first class of my first day "what to do in a hostage situation", so yeah, we got chucked in at the deep end!
I'm surprised the nurses are trained in C&R. Here they are only used to monitor the prisoner during restraint.
Diversity is great. But when it's prioritized over qualification and suitability, we have a problem. The older lady who started by saying she wasn't happy with non-elasticated waistbands and is hugely offended by abusive language for, she for instance is NOT qualified nor suitable. How she got so far through the process is frightening.
a prison officer should be really well trained. 9 week training is an outrage. Give them a chance. Inmates can be some of the most challenging people in society today.
Anybody that gets locked up behind bars for 23 hours a day will 'challenging'.

Worked as a Prisoner Custody Officer (15 years )for a private company, awful pay, awful conditions, awful job. It definitely changes your outlook on life. I would advise to avoid any job involving prisoners. Just a lot of aggro, it makes you tougher, but it’s a very negative and toxic atmosphere to work in. Just avoid at all costs.

I worked in Belmarsh between 1990 and 1995 as a Senior Officer, I was there when it was a building site and when we got our first prisoners from Brixton, eventually it had 840 inmates and a staffing of 650 Prison Officers, however when you put in shift systems, and take out leave , training, and sick leave staffing levels are always tight, now it appearss they have reduced staffing to 450 and upped the inmates to 1000 , very sensible especially as most of the staff haven`t a clue.

I feel that these prison guards need to have some sort of physical and or test not an academic test but something so you can have staff that are fit and capable to handle the criminals. Most staff in jails are not like that maybe even really extensive training programs like what the army/marines do just not to extensive.

The prison service is accused of racism, but yet they go out of their way to provide religious books, religious sermons etc. 90 percent of the time, it's the prisoners who because of political correctness, push it as far as they can. Human rights is not about getting everything you want all the time, it's about the right being treated fairly, adequate living conditions and the right to fair representation in a court of law. It's not about having a soft sentence I.e on holiday

Many seem to fail to realise that going to prison is meant to be the punishment. One is *NOT* meant to actually be punished whilst inside, unless they have done something wrong whilst inside.
What? They deserve to be given a kicking twice a day. Otherwise you seem to be suggesting being sent to some holiday camp is a punishment in itself. They are sent there to be punished.

I suppose it's because of the overriding culture and laws in Britton. It would have to suck big time to have a convinced criminal get off charges or time because they were misgendered or had racism claims.
I see this comment a lot, but i don't really get it. Very few countries have a better correctional system. People seem to want a more American system just because it is harsher even though it has demonstrably worse outcomes.

Back in the old days of the 80s and 90s prison officers stuck together and watched each other’s back on shifts to be a good prison officer your best chance if your ex army forces ect , you need to be able to look after yourself in a violent situation, I’ve met some real nice prison officers from my 26 years in prison I’ve heard belmarsh is a tough place ,
You know what I can say about this whole motley crew?
They all, from what I saw, displayed the absolute most important quality as a c/o and in life in general, empathy.

i know it was at least 13 year ago, i know that as office Skinner had me up against the door in the SO,s office by my throat. long story what brought me to the office to start with, but just shows how quick some of theses officers turn from people to monsters within a few years!!!

Sure sounds like they lowered the standards. I wouldn’t want unqualified people being the ones watching my back. Several of these fit that category, imo.
Some prisons should be run like oldschool boot camps ,especially the young offenders
tobinakatarx put drug addicts going through cold Turkey on a rigorous exercise programme, it will be cheaper and quicker just to hang them.
Sure if you want to send them back out into the world more likely to reoffend, with worse mental problems (a huge percentage of inmate have untreated mental illnesses) and being even more hateful of authority, go ahead and treat them like soldiers.
Thinking about doing this job but it just seems a right mess, there is an interview now? how hard is it to get into the prison service? before it was "easy" now now it seems harder? i'm 20 and thinking of doing this as a first job fyi. Some people are telling me like "too young" "destroy your life" but it seems like a job i'd want, either that or PCSO, thoughts?
