Hi Just bought number 79! Fed up with bloated uninvolved cars, sold my 992 and paid £9k for an 17 year old Renault. Happiest I’ve ever been behind the wheel!! Love it
This video cost me several thousand pounds. Proud owner of number 478 for the past few weeks. Reckon Evo's words alone are worth £2k on used car values - fantastic car, everything he says is true!
I worked for Renault UK and had 15+ Renaultsport models: 182, V6, 197, Megane GT175 (diesel and actually quite quick) + Megane 225. We had to specify the Cup suspension on all models, and the 182 was by far the most fun, so small, and light and lively. (the V6 wasn't any quicker anywhere below 100 MPH and demanded total focus at all times, it also attracted every boy-racer for miles for a drag race!) The 197 was certainly more grown up and a better car in many respects, but carried too much weight and you needed to be right in the power band to overtake or make real progress, the 182 just seemed to go whatever gear you were in. You could be quite silly and the car would just let you get away with it, as close to a (torquey) go-kart as you can get on the road.
Harry's garage This is one cracking little sport hatch! I never realized how special this was. We don't get Renault in the states. Shame really, because I love it. Thanks for sharing your expertise and thoughts on this, Harry!
Interesting to see the massive changes to the collection... Maybe an episode in the future to update why/when those missing classics moved on????? As a late-to-the-party US fan, I LOVE hearing about the cars we never got. 😢
He still has the two lambos.the lotus and the Clio is still around. He has an own episode on the Zonda, the rest I don't know. I bet he regret selling the Lancia delta.
Top Gear has had it's day. Harry is exceptional, really a significant part of the heart and soul of EVO. Thanks, Harry! Now to find a nice Clio Williams to import...
Just sold mine after 6 months. Would have loved to have held onto it but need to invest in the house. Had a 182 Cup for 7 years. Trophy was always an itch that needed scratched. 127k miles and it was faultless in the time I had it. One track day, two hillclimbs and a good few b-road blasts. Cost me -£500 as I managed to make a little on it despite investing in a wheel refurb and service. Can't complain at that!
Harry's back catalogue of video is a treasure trove. No Clios or Megans in the US but some old Civic Si's knocking around Craigslist. Had a Pug 306 XSi in the 90's, was great fun. My GTI MkVII is great, but not very visceral.
I don' have a 'well stocked' garage like Harry, but I do have a 2006 Mini Cooper S. Mine has been modded to 225 BHP, and I had to smile when he was talking about small, light, fast cars. It's not the fastest car on the road, but it's so much fun, and so rewarding for a weekend blast. I'm onboard when he talks about the BHP / fun ratio of hot hatches.
I’m still love with that Lancia of yours, but I’ve drove a trophy for an afternoon whilst on vacation in France and Germany. I saw it in traffic I said I always wanted to drive one of those, my Boyfriend bei g the impulsive guy he was I’m told me to follow him and ask. Best present ever.
I so agree with this video. I drove one for a couple of months as my work car (worked at a Nissan/Renault dealer), and to be honest, never had or have had so much fun in a car.
Another good thorough walk around. Don't have to convince me of the greatness of great small performance cars. Love the adjustable, remote reservoir dampers. Dampers are critical suspension elements. What stood out to me was the GRP 308. I'd like to see a Harry tour of one of these rare 308s.
I have a 260 bhp 2003 Seat Cupra R and when I got into my mums old 172 i was surprised. The NA response and the light weight just make for awesome fun.
thank Harryfor another great, enjoyable video. Not everything on cars is about the present or distant past. Loved it. About the clio, I get it, it makes me feel the same way, I just can't live with the fact that for the same price it is possible to get a TypeR, and that engine alone is everything.
The external resivouer on the Sachs shox isn't just there because the damper is thicker and needs extra fluid room! It's for damping adjustability, most have around 8 different settings to either stiffen the damper or soften it, this one is for adjustable bump and rebound which would be faster or slower, it allows you the adjustability to fine tune the the cars front suspension to your own liking so it's not either too stiff! Or too soft! With this shock you can always find a setting that's perfect for you!
This video made my mind up to sell my Mk5 Golf GTI a Clio, budget didn't allow a Trophy but i managed to pick up a Cup packed 182 and i love the little thing. It feels like you wear it rather than sit in it.
I've got the stock 172 for almost 5 years now and I can't find any newer alternative that comes close in terms of price, fun, practicality and running costs.
Among the ones I've driven, both the 182 and 197 (Cup Edition) are certainly up there. But to me, the older hot hatches are still worth a mention. I absolutely loved both the Mk I Golf GTI (1600 and 1800 versions) and the Mk II 16V. And the one car that really surprised me back in the day was the "E"-model Opel Kadett GSI 16V. Not a very good or desirable car compared to its main rival (Golf Mk II), but that engine was phenomenal. What I miss in all modern hatches is the feeling of being involved in the driving, the feeling of "directness" and responsiveness that you got in older cars. IMO, the switch to turbo-charged engines and electric power steering plus the massive increase in weight has killed a lot of what made old-school hot hatches so special and desirable.
I agree. Something like the today's Focus RS is not a true hot-hatch to me. Way too big and complicated. In my book, the smaller the donor car, the better the hot-hatch it'll be..
'bout time for a Trophy update isn't it? I know your son has now acquired it but surely after the success of the Range Rover update it may make a bit of sense? 😊
Harry's garage Great video on the clio Harry. Oh the subject of Hot Hatches i would love to hear your take on the Mk1 Golf Gti? Excellent videos, look forward to the next!
Ian Townsend I bought a Twingo RS Cup last year as a dayli driver on side of my Porsche 944 S2 "Clubsport".... and a few month after i bought the Renault a good friend and i made a tour around the german countryroads.. i was in front with the Twingo and he in the Porsche(250hp) was behind me. I managed to make a few hundred meters of ground at these curvy roads =) People who know me thought i was totaly bonkers to buy a twingo but after a little ride with me they agree that it is near the same fun as the Porsche ;)
I can't believe how much work they put into what is a niche model built off a niche model! Bespoke tyres and racing dampers? Sounds like the sort of thing you get in a Macca P1.
If you like this trophy, you should definitely try the Renault Twingo RS 133, especially the cup version, I'd consider it one of the last hurrahs of the NA hot hatch
Fantastic little cars, I'm a younger driver and had one as my first "hot" hatch a year or so back, having now swapped it in for a Megane R26. Not the fastest thing in the world but a rev-hungry peach of an engine that just begged to have the piss kicked out of it and a chassis that never seemed to give up! Great starter hatchback that's almost impossible to not misbehave in. My old man used to complain about the ride whenever he was a passenger (as everyone else did!), but he'd never complain when he was behind the wheel.
My mate had one of these last year but decided to sell it. I begged him to hold on for just two months whilst I saved up the 5500 he was asking so I could buy it! Unfortunately he needed the money though and sold it straight away. I so wish he was able to hold on, always wanted one of these!!
Harry great video. Have you ever tried a fist generation Type-r EK9 with the 1.6 litre 185 hp? I think it is pretty much comparable with the clio trophy if not better.
I love it how the MD over at Renault was surprised that when you build a fantastic, well engineered car, well, they just sell themselves. No need for any marketing or sales BS. Just build great cars that ppl want to own and drive.
so. way back when... I was sitting in a friend's living room and complaining about not wanting to fix cars for a living anymore... she.. an older woman.. about 35 or so.. so wiser than I... says.. if you could do anything... what would you do?... me.. working in car dealerships all my short life... think back to all the cushy jobs I've seen.. I'd like to sell Jaguars.. so I cut my hair, bought a couple ties and went over to San Jose British Motors and got a job... they gave me a Midget to drive.. far out man ... big fun up in the mountains where I lived... but I blew up 3... and they gave me a Renault le Car... looked pretty goofy to me... but... it was better handling, better mileage, and.. the cops absolutely ignored me.. in the days of the 55mph speed limit here that was a big bonus for me... and I couldn't blow it up... awesome 😎.. sunroof... lots of room for two people.. a dog and luggage.. ya can't judge a book by looking at the cover... it was big fun to drive

I would to see you drive your Clio back to back with the JCW GP2 on your favorite rd.
Real world on real roads smiles per mile, a hot hatch is hard to beat! As a modern comparison, Mk8 Fiesta ST can just nick the Clio Trophy on performance figures and the extra weight extra weight probably makes it more planted whilst the turbo’s extra torque provides a great linear power band and makes the ST more driveable more of the time when you don’t always want to be ‘on it’. Not very hooligan but extra bonus; over 40 miles average MPG with the ST.
Great video Harry, I can’t help but think Renault got this car spot on. How do you think it compares to the mad Alfa Romeo 147 GTA with the V6 under the hood? Cheers
Watching this at home lying in my sofa, and looking up on my kitchen shelf where a Megane RS trophy key is waiting to be unleashed :) .... #frenchhothatch #fwdisfun #dontmesswithfwdcars #harrysgarage
Hmm, even Harry forgets the 206 RC when he did his comparisons with other hot hatches. After all it has 177hp/1084kg, but I guess it wasn't as good in the damper department as this Clio.
Exowar01 Not really, it's the cheap transmission of the Peugeot that ruins the car, because it hasn't even got double or triple(Honda) synchros between gear 1 and 2, grinding if you shift very fast is unavoidable. Engine is indeed very similar to the Clio just look at the numbers, all are almost the same, RC even has more torque lower down than the Clio. Peak torque for the Clio is at 5250/Pug 4750 which gives the Pug a broader powerband. Performancewise, I've creamed several of my friends Clio's on the track and my RC is stock(except a straight-through exhaust) , so also seems more on par with the Clio 182 than anything else.
If you mean that he is English then yes but to an Englishman, he doesn't. If you aren't English you won't notice the different accents but they are from different parts of England and have different regional accents.
As for hot hatch history, if the Mini gets included, which I agree is entirely fair, then couldn't other cars be included? Isn't it more about taking a small, less assuming, inexpensive kind of car and turning it into a seriously formidable performance car. Quick, yes, but perhaps more about being a nimble driver's car than about brute force? A Lotus Cortina (which is earlier than them all), a Ford Escort RS and Cosworth? Others?

You absolutely can, but they're stupid expensive (no longer made), plus a fair chunk of money to have them rebuilt every few years. Far better getting a set of modern coilovers for track work, or just sticking with cup dampers which are 95% as good on the road.
Even though it's technologically advanced, I never fond the Renaults....This one looks like an egg... Dear Harry, I think the only Renault you must keep,in your collection is the Alpine A110 group 4... Now that's a proper Renault...and would be great to see a review on such a car...

You mention the Mini Cooper and the Golf GTI, great cars, but I think the grand daddy for this car is the Renault 5 GT Turbo.

The twingo uses the same chassis as the old gen clio. Same as the trophy
Renault SPort Clio 2nd generation best hot hatch ever definitely agree. Great video.
Miss EVO magazine...greatings from🇮🇹
I can't believe how much work they put into what is a niche model built
off a niche model! Bespoke tyres and racing dampers? Sounds like the
sort of thing you get in a Macca P1.
You should host Top Gear instead those of those wankers they hired.
what. you're questioning a former sitcom actor as a choice to present a motoring show? hahahahah
They had to find more wankers to make up for the loss of the arch wanker, Clarkson.
Damn, this guy keeps me glued to my screen with his knowledge, passion and enthusiasm
I've got a FF 182, always wanted a Trophy but now the price of them is just ridiculous.
If you like this trophy, you should definitely try the Renault Twingo RS 133, especially the cup version, I'd consider it one of the last hurrahs of the NA hot hatch

:)) OK :) If you say so I trust you. :)))) ...how much passion pump out of your soul :)
Great vid Harry. :)
Try the Peugeot 208 gti by Peugeot sport. That last bit makes it quite a special hot hatch- proper lsd, brembos, sticky Michelins, wider track etc...
Harry great video. Have you ever tried a fist generation Type-r EK9 with the 1.6 litre 185 hp? I think it is pretty much comparable with the clio trophy if not better.

My hot hatch to match this beautiful collection would be the peugeot 205 t16 mid engine
man definitely
Great review. I'd love a mk1 clio 16v, but wouldn't say no to a clio cup either, the French seem to do small hot hatches really well.
The Delta intégral on garage 👍

Nice. These things don't get enough respect on the roads, people can get a bit snobbish until they see it disappear into the distance that is.
Best hot hatch ever ~ Renault 5 GT Turbo ;)
No your wrong , Fiat Uno Turbo was faster and better
Yes it was...there was a similar story with a Porche 911 and a GT Turbo keeping up round a European race circuit!
Ok ok ok I'm envious,. But Many thanks for sharing part of you extraordinary life . Love
I've watched twice! Nice story, nice car!

I'm surprised you haven't been pulled by the old bill with these videos showing you whizzing around - keep up the good work!
I don't think I'd argue about cars with Harry!
Ford Puma 1.7 was a great car.
😍 Blue edition 2004 (cup), MÉXICO 👌, 🚘/150.
the words ... and, a Renault Clio - made me laugh. Great video again. Keep up the work!
Hmm, even Harry forgets the 206 RC when he did his comparisons with other hot hatches. After all it has 177hp/1084kg, but I guess it wasn't as good in the damper department as this Clio.
The 206 RC actualy never was as good as the Clio, the clio had more performance and a better engine.

Interesting. You prized engine size and power over everything else in a hothatch, yet I've never seen you in a 147 GTA.
nice one
Alright Harry. I've got a 172 Cup and I'll happily give you a race if you get it arranged. Cheers
He kinda sounds like james may correct me if im wrong
I think he does :-)
His choice of language is very similar, the enunciation is quite different
If you mean that he is English then yes but to an Englishman, he doesn't.
If you aren't English you won't notice the different accents but they are from different parts of England and have different regional accents.
Which one is better as a drivers car? By that I mean the handling in purest form possible. This Clio 182 or Toyota MR2 1999-2007?
Strange place to put the ultrasoon sensors for the alarm on the A pilar? They usually are in the back pointing to the front.
Others?
I love Rouge vif Clio trophy. ..
will you ever do a Lotus Esprit review? for me, it was a defining sports car during the 80s.
How do you feel about the Megane 225 cup of the same era? My mate owns one and i quite like it.
I wish he would a review on the Fiat 695 tributo Ferrari
Best Braai It's just like a 595 competizione but with harsher suspension and the unfortunate no-option automated manual gearbox.
Great review

I had a phase 2 172 for a while, I managed to pass an s2000 on track. Special little cars.
2001 clio 172 facelift, 2004 clio 182
No the 3.2 V6 Clio was the best version 252bhp from a clio
Am really suprizes Harry doesn't have a V6 Sport version Clio or A Talbot Sunbeam Lotus.
The French know how to build a proper hot hatch.
Imagine if the word "just" wasn't around Harry would be stuff
I'm getting a Clio 220 Trophy in 2 month and 2 weeks. Shame for the dual clutch box, that's the only drawback I can see.
"just can't help but drive this think like a tit" Like the cut of your jib Harry.
I don't think I'll ever sell my 182. Sold my 205 GTI and still regret it.
"I just can't help but drive this thing like a tit" 😂😂
I have heard it was renault not vw to bring the first hot hatch
is it fwd?
Harry, what about the EK9 Civic Type R??
I'd rather ek9 any day!
+Adam Woodford wouldn't say ek9 is mass produced or shit
Harry's garage Is that a Patek 5100 J 10 Day?
Pasquale Franze That's an amazing spot! You are correct..
+Harry's garage Beautiful watch. May I ask, did you purchase it new? I own a smashing Golden Ellipse myself, and would never be without it. PP watches are an amazing experience in themselves.
The watch is worth more than the bloody car!
Now we are talking
Can you not install those dampers on a regular 182?
You absolutely can, but they're stupid expensive (no longer made), plus a fair chunk of money to have them rebuilt every few years. Far better getting a set of modern coilovers for track work, or just sticking with cup dampers which are 95% as good on the road.
I'm afraid I'll have to disagree with what was said about the 205 GTi! It's the king of hot hatches in my eyes!
👍
i am in love with mk1 gti but am cheating with fiat 130 tc how lucky i am
Give it a revin Kevin
Hold it flat Mat
Give it a squirt Kurt
Why did Switzerland want 50 right hand drive Clio's when they drive on the right?
They didn't got the righthand-drive, they got the lefthand-drive.
Hmmmm, So was the test car "breathed on" by Renault for the test, and did then Harry "twig-on" ?
?? Car was absolutely standard when I bought it. Only thing I've changed on it since owning it is the exhaust.
how is that compare to the Clio V6?
better
Much, much, much better!!!
Not better at all.. very very different.. but not better. I’ve owned both. Used the v6 as a daily for 2 years. Phase 2
Meh Civic type R is best hot hatch by miles
Its the first time I've heard harry use a rude word..............shame on you, Harry!!!! you are better than that!!
What about the v6?
Apparently it's not nearly as sharp as the RS.
Mojo Just like any crazy car, needs a proper alignment and it's bloody brilliant (the mk2, the mk1 is just faulty)
Even though it's technologically advanced, I never fond the Renaults....This one looks like an egg... Dear Harry, I think the only Renault you must keep,in your collection is the Alpine A110 group 4... Now that's a proper Renault...and would be great to see a review on such a car...
Drive one...
In another life maybe mate...On this one, thanks I'll pass...
No doubt that they are technologically advanced...But the shape man...the shape...OMG..!
Indeed mate , the Alpine 110 trophy was a very beautiful Renault...
an ongoing debate - but nothing beats an R5 GT Turbo for me.
