    A lot of people get that wrong; Guzzis, Hondas CX's HAVE LONGITUDINAL engines since their crankshaft is mounted "longitudinally" to the bike frame and HD's, Ducatis, Viragos and many more HAVE TRANSVERSALS engines since their Crankshafts are mounted transversely to the frame, make your research but don't worry, many people has the same confusion because the cylinders orientation 🧐

  • @louisashley2347
    @louisashley2347 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great job explaining the two configurations. The orientation makes a big difference on the amount of torque delivered to the rear wheel. Every time you change orientation of the path of power 90 degrees, you lose significant torque. So a SHAFT DRIVE bike would benefit from a transverse mounted motor significantly because the crankshaft is oriented in the same direction as the drive shaft, eliminating turning the force 90 degrees until the final ring and pinion gear. On A longitudinal V configuration the crankshaft is perpendicular to the frame, then it must be turned longways to a drive shaft in order to reach the rear wheel, where it will have to be turned back at the ring and pinion set in order to deliver power to the wheel which the axle is oriented perpendicular to the long axis of he bike again. With a chain drive coupled to a longitudinal V, a 90 degree turn is eliminated due to the lack of a drive shaft. Chain drive/Longitudinal V the power comes off the crankshaft at 90 degrees to the long axis of the bike, and remains that way as its delivered to the wheel. So all the shafts are oriented the same. Perpendicular crankshaft delivers power to a perpendicular output at the transmission and then through the chain to the wheel, also perpendicular to the long axis of the bike. So a transverse mounted engine definitely has advantage over long mounted IF power is delivered to the wheel using a SHAFT. And a longitudinal engine has the advantage if the power is delivered to the rear wheel by a chain.

    I've owned maybe 20 different types of motorcycles. The two that I have "loved" are the Guzzi and the Harley. In both cases, it was the strong character of the machine that won me over. The Guzzi actually makes you feel a little like your riding some kind of living creature.

    You got the longitudinal vs. transverse thing backwards.

  • @johnlebeau5471

    Beating a two year old video here, but it is indeed the crankshaft that determines if an engine is transverse or longitudinal. Guzzi engines are longitudinal, Harley's are transverse. Interestingly enough, I was looking up tire pressures today for my Moto Guzzi V9, and I noticed the list the motor as traverse, traversale in Italian. Transverse means set crosswise, traverse means something that crosses. So, transverse-set sideways in the frame, traverse-mounted longitudinally with the V crossing the frame. The only inline longitudinally mounted engine I can think of is in the BMW K 75 and K 100 with a three/four cylinder inline laying on it's side and it's crankshaft pointing towards the rear tire.

    your explanation is reversed, engines with longitudinal layout are like bmw boxer, moto guzzi v twin, honda cx. while the transverse layout is like Ducati's L engine, v4 honda rc, vfr, rvf, etc. The easy way to tell the difference is that the transverse layout moves in rhythm with the wheel's movement, while the longitudinal layout doesn't match the wheel's.

  • @stuglenn1112
    @stuglenn1112 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you think about the way everything is rotating inside each engine, a longitudinal engine is more suited to chain or belt drive and the transverse engine to shaft drive. This is to minimize directional changes of the power being transmitted.

  • @johnhess351
    @johnhess351 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very nice to have you discuss this concept: There are more easily described simple differences between transverse and longitudinally mounted v-twins that could be stated in one or two sentences than the torque sensation of revving the motor at a stop. Without being super technically engineering oriented, you could have said: "Transverse V have these features compared to Longitudinal V-twins: 1: run cooler with jugs out in wind. 2. are right alignment for shaft drive 3. rev higher 4. Feel like a push-rod V-8 when pulling hard 5. Shaft drive is typical with most Transverse Vs and is much superior to chain in most Longitudinal Vs, but shaft is major repair if it ever needs replacement."

    • @thesmoker4027
      @thesmoker4027 ปีที่แล้ว

      How can a transverse v twin rev higher than a longitudinal? Just turning the engine by 90 degrees won’t change it’s rev capacity.
      Also the evidence says otherwise: guzzis revs lower than same-volume engines from other companies.
      But that’s ok because guzzis engine are very low rpm torque and power. Don t need to push them over 6000.

  • @MegaAvijay
    @MegaAvijay 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I guess transverse and longitudinal are witj respect to the way your crankshaft rotates with respect to the motion of the vehicle in that case transverse must be the standard vtwin

    Interesting topic. "Character " is the adjective here. Inline 4s have their place but ultra smooth. It's what you prefer. Had couple longitudinal v twins, not ridden the V7 but a Honda cx500 which, is similar in principle. Loved the torque pull at idle on the cx500, that rock from side to side. Will have to try a HD one day. My lack of midriff and lack of leather waistcoat ownership permits that at present lol. BTW...love the way Americans say " Dewkaddi" and you're definitely right. Its "Gutzzeee" ✌👍

    i dont know if it's a cali thing, but i saw my first transverse (i didnt know what it was called, i called it a lateral mounted v twin when i searched for it) a couple days ago, and it just looked... wrong LOL. i was like, wtf?? and i didnt understand how the center of gravity would be when banking/leaning. i would imagine it would be heavier on the sides due to that configuration, but idk, its not like i got on it, i just saw it ride by.

  • @alfredwilson3915
    @alfredwilson3915 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Same principle as a car. A V8 engine mounted along the front/rear longitudinal axis of the frame is a longitudinally mounted engine.
    A V8 engine with crankshaft mounted 90° to the longitudinal axis of frame is a transversely mounted engine.
    Same for all vehicles including motorcycles.
    Weirdly Moto Guzzi advertises their engines as transversely mounted, which they aren't despite the many attempts by Guzzi experts/historians to make Guzzi correct this error which they have not and likely never will.

Pozdrawiam.

    dry clutch comes with transverse engines and usually a driveshaft for the rear wheel .
    these features do not come in handy when commuting in heavy traffic .
    moto guzzi bikes are very nice for long rides and twisty mountain roads
    maintenance cost is high and the heat that comes up from an aircooled engine is unbearable.
    they are more expensive to make from factory and the transmission from the engine and back is heavy and complicated .
    where i live it gets up to 45 celsius
    even a 125 1 cylinder bike gets ridiculous heat to your legs in traffic at 40-45 Celsius .
    As most things in life you need the proper thing in the proper place at the proper time
