The priest was another fascinating character with an interesting philosophy. I was intrigued with his description of the falsehood of human love. When he described a mother’s love to her children as discrimination against others rather than love itself, I was originally offended. It felt like a rather extreme approach, but I think there is value to his words, and it provides a unique perspective I haven’t ever heard before.
it is what I've kinda come to understand as: humans are not inherently evil or good, but rather inherently selfish, this is not a bad thing necessarily. your family you love because it is "yours" your country you often love because its "yours" like the priest describes it is discrimination of those that are yours and those that aren't and thus can it be truly said that you are/have true love
the flaw with the priest's argument is he doesn't realise there are different types of love. Loving what/who is yours IS a type of love, but it is a completely different concept from Jesus' unselfish love, which is what the priest was trying to achieve.

In any cases, canute basically rejects god, saying he is a dick, refuses to seek heaven and create heaven on earth. He is basically mad at god cause he isn't loving as he should. I did think once before I watched the first episode that they meant Finland (because they sound the same). but then when an anime expert friend explained it to me, I thought it was North America. And then I forgot about it because I was infamous for forgetting important details and watched Nux's video. And then I thought, "Ahhh, it was an imaginary land, I thought it was a real place", and then I watched the first episode and I thought again that it was Finland. And then I thought, wait a minute... those natives were awfully suspicious and Leif Erikson mustache dude seems to have a familiar name... BRUh
The Vinland they're imagining doesn't. It's true that the Vikings discovered Canada at one point, but they decided against staying there or colonizing it. The land where everything is great that the characters keep imagining isn't the historical Vinland, nor how historical Vikings saw the real thing.

He was dead serious but he broke the ice to cover himself. He later thought and regretted it deeply when he was on the boat. He wanted to get Thors out of his head cuz he reminded him of the type of "Warrior" he'd never be. But Thorfinn followed all the time so you get why Thors was always on his mind. His character is complex and really deep.

But Vinland, the legendary land that Leif describes where slavery and war doesn’t exist is absolutely not real, there was slavery and war in America long before the English arrived, and long before the Vikings did too.
Asheladd is honestly one of the greatest characters of all time, when he makes some reappearances in the manga it's always super great. Same with thors. Top lads
S A D M A N E : ( Well Thorfinn also had some great development as a character throughout the story. He went from generic revenge driven shounen protagonist to a deep in-depth character with complex thoughts and feels. Especially in the farmland arc
As much as I like Askeladd, Thorfinn and Thorkell, Thors remains my favorite character in the series. Which is a testament to the author's skill, considering Thors wasn't around for that long.
My favorite moment form the anime is when the priest is talking about “love” and how the only example is Jesus and his sacrifice but believes that true love is not real. However when the two Viking pals mention Thor’s lack of killing the priest has a 180 change because now he believes that humans can truly “love” one another.
DarkFishGamming He didn’t have a change of heart after hearing Thor’s backstory. He expressed what he thought love was to prince Canute after he find out about Thor. Thor’s backstory didn’t change his definition of love, but rather gave him hope... that humans are able to love each other.
All jokes aside, Vinland Saga is yet another work of art by Wit Studio nonetheless. From its openings to the story and the character development, Vinland Saga was personally one of my favorites last year, I highly suggest giving the manga a chance if you're an anime watched only.
I really like how three of the five most important characters are named after Thor. It really subtly shows how important and beloved Thor was in Norse culture. Also a good indicator of just how well the author knows Norse culture.
To say that the farm arc is great is a gross statement, it shocked me to my core, just by remembering the first time I read it my body simmers, truly one of the greatest arcs in all media
Actually, Askeladd is the name of the most famous folktale hero in Norway (I'm Norwegian), which I think really adds a great element to Askeladd in Vinland Saga. The animators have obviously added something from Norway, since they're talking about Norwegian kings, and a girl in the show called Rogaland, which is a state in Norway.

vinland saga was never a generic recomendation for me. ive been telling people that its a legit masterpiece and one of the best, if not the best anime i have ever seen. it makes demon slayer look like shit.for just this year only attack on titan and promised neverland come close
Ash Although Most people who don’t like it are the ones that judge it based by its looks or by the concept of animals or the genre without even watching it. Most people turn a blind eye to it. I am not into that anime’s genre or anything related to animal characters, however, I don’t want to shit on it also without seeing it. Some romance, some cool action scenes especially some future ones in the manga, drama, and some other stuff but these are the three main ones. So if your not into one aspect, theres something you'll be into.

I could go around telling people of an amazing paradise on Earth, but that doesn’t make it real even though there is an officially unincorporated place called ‘Paradise’ right next to Las Vegas.

Well, I think that this guy took the central point of Vinland saga: if you want a better World you must build it by yourself. This will become clear at the end of the second season, if they follow the manga. That said, this video also contains some blatant mistakes and misunderstandings. What follows will contain some SPOILERS, but I'll try to reduce them at minimum. Let's start from king Knutr/Cnut/Canute/Canuto, who is described in the video as a historical tyrannical ruler. This is a mistake, as the historical Canute is remembered as a wise king of both England and Denmark, who restored prosperity in Great Britain after decades of war and pillaging by Viking raiders. Of course, he was more similar to Macchiavelli's prince than to King Elessar of the Lord of the Rings, but that's the reality behind all middle age rulers, from Charlemagne to Salah ad-Din. Please note that it is implied in the anime and even more clearly in the manga that Canute is fated to become a wise ruler of England and Denmark. Therefore, most of the descriptions contained in this video about the development of the character of Canute in the anime contain the mistake of believing that Canute is fated to become a tyrant. No, he is fated to become a much better ruler than his father. This also leads to a profound misunderstanding of the motivations behind Askeladd behaviour. Indeed, what is missing in the video is (SPOILER) that Askeladd decided to induce Canute to become the wise ruler foreseen by his mother and the Welsh legends of King Arthur. He did not decide that at the end of the season, as implied by the video, but well before. And, what is also missed in the video is that for one instant Askeladd also offered this possibility to Thors. What comes here is that Askeladd never gave up upon the search for the "king that was promised", but he only decided to change his strategy. He decided to mold prince Canute to become the wise King Artorius, instead of waiting to find a man that would fulfill that role. Therefore, claiming that Askeladd would have become the hero Artorius by himself is, IMHO, a misunderstanding of his real motivations. Instead, it is clearly said in the anime that he used the facade of claiming himself king of Britannia to allow Canute to fulfill his destiny. Finally, I can concur with the idea that the "Vinland" of the title, and the one Thors and Thorfinn are talking about are more places in the mind than real lands, but Vinland was not a "mystical place" for Norse people. It looks like the author confused the idea of Avalon, a mystical place of the Arthurian legends, with the landmass discovered by Leif Eríksson (America). In fact, Norse people did not believe in mystical islands located in the far west, and the discovery of Vinland occurred just by chance. Although Vinland was certainly located in North America, there is a lot of debate where it was exactly located. The only formal proof of the presence of Norse people in America is the site of L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland (Terre-Neuve), but whether that island is what the Norsemen called "Vinland", or just part of it remains to be established. Besides this, it would have been helpful if the author would have said that the "Vinland" of the title is much more a place in the mind (and soul) than a real place, instead keeping saying that Vinland was a non-existing mystical place. In fact, Vinland is a real place also in the anime, as rightfully explained by Leif. This would become even more apparent in the fourth season, I believe.

Yeah, his constant saying of Canute being one of the most tyrannical rulers in history bothered me as well. Maybe for today's standards, he might be considered somewhat of a tyrant. But then you would have to consider just about EVERY medieval king a tyrant. From what I know about Canute the Great, he wasn't any more tyrannical than other rulers of his time.
I recently picked up this “Sagas of Iceland” history book, and I do a little squeal every time they name of one of the character’s from the anime. So cool.
Other way around for me because I took a class on the Icelandic Sagas at University a few years ago. Also, Anime Canute is historically inaccurate. For one thing, he was already married with kids by this point in history.
Careful with your wishes, with the success of Vinland Saga, there could be ten more series like it within the next year. Then everybody will be bored of it. But I do agree.
I love this manga, the mental struggles the main character experiences of being a killer, and what he had to go through in order to change his ways almost made me cry. When he said no swords in Vinland and explained why...Good God just read it.
This is not a spoiler. Like so Nux can see this! Just a small correction: Vinland does exist! It is how the Vikings of the time called the Americas. They stumbled upon an entire continent by accident on a exploration expedition, hundreds of years before Columbus made his own trip. Leif Ericsson (sailor dude from the show) was a real person who, according to historians sailed across the ocean around the arctic circle and landed in what we know today as North America, probably somewhere in Canada. They even interacted with natives in the region and created a small colony that eventually perished for mysterious reasons... No proper archeological evidence of this colony has been found to this day, which is why it is still considered a contested theory and not a historical fact. The more you know!
I read the manga, the only thing I regret is catching up and having to wait for new chapters. It is my all time favorite manga. Amazing story and character progression.
My favorite anime of 2019. I had low expectations going in and by the end of episode 4, I was immediately hooked. Askeladd isn't one of the best characters written in just Vinland Saga, he's one of the best fictional characters written period! An amazing show from start to finish and I'm glad I got to experience the journey alongside with many others in 2019. PS- Also shoutout to Vinland Saga giving me my first 10k viewed video ever, HELL YEAH this show forever has my gratitude!
King Cnut is not really thought about historically as a tyrant, rather the opposite. This could be simply due to the good relationship he kept with the Church, but no one knows for sure.

Personally I see that more as the idea of the forever green Vinland that is so pure is what Thors is referencing. I know the whole Leif Erikson saying that’s what it is, but I think it’s is more of the idea that this perfect land/utopia doesn’t exist. More of like a foil for Thorfinn for reality.
The fact that it is in fact a real place but is also in the show an idealized form of 'heaven' is really well done, as its a metaphor for how if each person can find there purpose in life and achieve that "Vinland" on the metaphorical level, its possible to achieve, though with great strife and sacrifice, which is what Cnut seems to have understood.
Wait Vinland does exist, it was determined by historians as most likely being the areas of which vikings discovered, explored and settled within Canada. Eventually these places within modern day Canada became mythologized in the Nordic pantheons, especially when the settlements in Canada died and no one was left to know where or how to reach Canada again.

Also Aot's animation was worse than Vinland's. If you actually paid attention to the episodes before Ragnar dies and a little after, you'll realize Canute's development wasn't 'out of nowhere'. Also Character writing and development in Vinland is much greater than aot, manga wise and anime.
I don't like reading manga, the experience just isn't for me, but I sat down and read nearly the entire Vinland saga manga after the first twelve or so episodes of the anime, because I was so desperate for the rest of the story. This series immediately became one of my favorite anime, super excited that you finally did analysis.
Askeladd really is my favorite character. I couldn't even call him a villain. Even though he did a lot of shady things. There was so much going on with his character that I was drawn to it. TL:DR: Askeladd is a complex character that I respect.

If anything, King Sweyn deserved that title of main villain in the series.

Vinland Saga is a work of art. I can't wait for the anime to continue into the Farmland Arc and Baltic Sea War. It's not getting slept on, but like Nux said, it went under a lot of people's radar. (Honestly at least the fandom isn't really toxic since it's not overhyped) I feel like it got robbed for anime of the year.

My favorite moment form the anime is when the priest is talking about “love” and how the only example is Jesus and his sacrifice but believes that true love is not real. However when the two Viking pals mention Thor’s lack of killing the priest has a 180 change because now he believes that humans can truly “love” one another.

Actually, Askeladd is the name of the most famous folktale hero in Norway (I'm Norwegian), which I think really adds a great element to Askeladd in Vinland Saga. The animators have obviously added something from Norway, since they're talking about Norwegian kings, and a girl in the show called Rogaland, which is a state in Norway.

Well, I think that this guy took the central point of Vinland saga: if you want a better World you must build it by yourself. This will become clear at the end of the second season, if they follow the manga.
That said, this video also contains some blatant mistakes and misunderstandings. What follows will contain some SPOILERS, but I'll try to reduce them at minimum.
Let's start from king Knutr/Cnut/Canute/Canuto, who is described in the video as a historical tyrannical ruler. This is a mistake, as the historical Canute is remembered as a wise king of both England and Denmark, who restored prosperity in Great Britain after decades of war and pillaging by Viking raiders. Of course, he was more similar to Macchiavelli's prince than to King Elessar of the Lord of the Rings, but that's the reality behind all middle age rulers, from Charlemagne to Salah ad-Din. Please note that it is implied in the anime and even more clearly in the manga that Canute is fated to become a wise ruler of England and Denmark. Therefore, most of the descriptions contained in this video about the development of the character of Canute in the anime contain the mistake of believing that Canute is fated to become a tyrant. No, he is fated to become a much better ruler than his father.
This also leads to a profound misunderstanding of the motivations behind Askeladd behaviour. Indeed, what is missing in the video is (SPOILER) that Askeladd decided to induce Canute to become the wise ruler foreseen by his mother and the Welsh legends of King Arthur. He did not decide that at the end of the season, as implied by the video, but well before. And, what is also missed in the video is that for one instant Askeladd also offered this possibility to Thors. What comes here is that Askeladd never gave up upon the search for the "king that was promised", but he only decided to change his strategy. He decided to mold prince Canute to become the wise King Artorius, instead of waiting to find a man that would fulfill that role. Therefore, claiming that Askeladd would have become the hero Artorius by himself is, IMHO, a misunderstanding of his real motivations. Instead, it is clearly said in the anime that he used the facade of claiming himself king of Britannia to allow Canute to fulfill his destiny.
Finally, I can concur with the idea that the "Vinland" of the title, and the one Thors and Thorfinn are talking about are more places in the mind than real lands, but Vinland was not a "mystical place" for Norse people. It looks like the author confused the idea of Avalon, a mystical place of the Arthurian legends, with the landmass discovered by Leif Eríksson (America). In fact, Norse people did not believe in mystical islands located in the far west, and the discovery of Vinland occurred just by chance. Although Vinland was certainly located in North America, there is a lot of debate where it was exactly located. The only formal proof of the presence of Norse people in America is the site of L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland (Terre-Neuve), but whether that island is what the Norsemen called "Vinland", or just part of it remains to be established.
Besides this, it would have been helpful if the author would have said that the "Vinland" of the title is much more a place in the mind (and soul) than a real place, instead keeping saying that Vinland was a non-existing mystical place. In fact, Vinland is a real place also in the anime, as rightfully explained by Leif. This would become even more apparent in the fourth season, I believe.

This is not a spoiler. Like so Nux can see this! Just a small correction: Vinland does exist! It is how the Vikings of the time called the Americas. They stumbled upon an entire continent by accident on a exploration expedition, hundreds of years before Columbus made his own trip. Leif Ericsson (sailor dude from the show) was a real person who, according to historians sailed across the ocean around the arctic circle and landed in what we know today as North America, probably somewhere in Canada. They even interacted with natives in the region and created a small colony that eventually perished for mysterious reasons... No proper archeological evidence of this colony has been found to this day, which is why it is still considered a contested theory and not a historical fact. The more you know!

My favorite anime of 2019. I had low expectations going in and by the end of episode 4, I was immediately hooked. Askeladd isn't one of the best characters written in just Vinland Saga, he's one of the best fictional characters written period! An amazing show from start to finish and I'm glad I got to experience the journey alongside with many others in 2019.

Leif Erikson is the one who found Vinland (in our Histry, yes this is real life) and he is also the one in the manga who says he has been there.
Personally I see that more as the idea of the forever green Vinland that is so pure is what Thors is referencing. I know the whole Leif Erikson saying that’s what it is, but I think it’s is more of the idea that this perfect land/utopia doesn’t exist. More of like a foil for Thorfinn for reality.
The fact that it is in fact a real place but is also in the show an idealized form of 'heaven' is really well done, as its a metaphor for how if each person can find there purpose in life and achieve that "Vinland" on the metaphorical level, its possible to achieve, though with great strife and sacrifice, which is what Cnut seems to have understood.

@jack theripper1991 I agree, Leif was the guy who led the expedition to the Americas. And he should be remembered for that, although no credit should be taken away from Columbus either. Without his efforts, we probably wouldn't exist today.

@@daddy_.rome0 nope. AOT is better. Thorfinns character in season 1 was really bad (although hes goated in manga). Canutes out of nowhere character development and you have that priest with his BS argument. Vinaland still great tho askeladd really carry the whole series.
@@mavvzahardd2678 nope, Vinland is better, also Thorfinn's character isn't bad, at least his revenge storyline is much more interesting than Eren in the earlier seasons. Also Aot's animation was worse than Vinland's. If you actually paid attention to the episodes before Ragnar dies and a little after, you'll realize Canute's development wasn't 'out of nowhere'. Also Character writing and development in Vinland is much greater than aot, manga wise and anime.

I don't like reading manga, the experience just isn't for me, but I sat down and read nearly the entire Vinland saga manga after the first twelve or so episodes of the anime, because I was so desperate for the rest of the story. This series immediately became one of my favorite anime, super excited that you finally did analysis.

Askeladd really is my favorite character. I couldn't even call him a villain. Even though he did a lot of shady things. There was so much going on with his character that I was drawn to it.
TL:DR: Askeladd is a complex character that I respect.
Paul Cornejo Agreed, anyone who watched Vinland Saga could easily tell you that Askeladd shouldn't have been chosen as the main villain in the CR anime awards(a minor thing though since this year's awards were better than before). If anything, King Sweyn deserved that title of main villain in the series.
Yeah i couldn't call him a villian even after countless raids on villages and the raping of so many. As well as hundreds of innocent civilians many of which are children and women. So yeah i agree he isn't a villian at all
vinland saga was the only anime that made me think about the themes it talked about. I legit spend a day without watching any anime, just thinking about vinland saga.

I can't wait for the anime to continue into the Farmland Arc and Baltic Sea War. It's not getting slept on, but like Nux said, it went under a lot of people's radar. (Honestly at least the fandom isn't really toxic since it's not overhyped) I feel like it got robbed for anime of the year.
Remember how TLOU2 tried to do a theme of “revenge bad”? Vinland saga did that better.
