    Video by New Dream
Psychologist Tim Kasser discusses how America's culture of consumerism undermines our well-being. When people buy into the ever-present marketing messages that "the good life" is "the goods life," they not only use up Earth's limited resources, but they are less happy and less inclined toward helping others. The animation both lays out the problems of excess materialism and points toward solutions that promise a healthier, more just, and more sustainable life.

Sitting around and shooting the breeze with losers from other parts of the world isn't gonna make you a better person. We do not need so much stuff to be happy, but need to eat healthy, to move (exercise), to sleep in clean bed, to keep our body clean and to wear washed clothes, and to have family and friends to care for. It is good time to know what is vital and what is not for your (my) happiness.

1:05 “Research consistently shows that the more people value materialistic values and aspirations as goals the lower their happiness and life satisfaction and the fewer pleasant emotions they experience day to day. Depression, anxiety, and substance abuse also tend to be higher among people who tend to value the aims encouraged by consumer society.”
1:35 “Scientists have found that materialistic values and pro-social values are like a seesaw, as materialist values go up pro-social values tend to go down. This helps explain why people act in less empathic, generous, and cooperative ways when money is on their minds.”
2:05 “Studies show that when people strongly endorse money, image, and status they are less likely to engage in ecologically beneficial activities.”
2:35 “We need to understand what causes people to prioritize materialistic values. For instance studies show that people focus more on material things when they feel insecure.”
3:00 “Scientists also know that the more people are exposed to the media the more they prioritize materialistic values.”
3:30 “The second principal for change involves promoting intrinsic values for growing as a person, being close to one’s family and friends, and improving the broader world.
The research shows that intrinsic values not only promote personal, social, and ecological well being but can also act to immunize people against materialism.”

What research, is what I'd ask? What scientist? I have a lot of very wealth friends, "Blue Collar Millionaires". We are all very happy. Very satisfied with our lives and what we've accomplished. Few of us experience depression, anxiety or substance abuse. You're confusing people who actually accomplish something with celebrities who don't believe they deserve their success. Or those, who didn't really have to work for something and know they don't deserve the success they have. It's called guilt. You might want to read things by real millionaires rather than what the media tells you. This video is about as "truthful" as the report Berkley put out that Americans were demanding gay marriages and accepting. Only to be discovered this "scientific report" was a hoax.

+IMxYOURxDADDY exactly. We've set up a system dependent on us being weak minded consumer drones. It's mind blowing if you think about it. What the hell would happen if we started fixing everything that was broken, bought used, and only bought out of physical necessity... So much of our economy would collapse. But, we would eventually reemerge with an economy that reflected a better human being. It all starts with our children. But buying less for them means more actual parenting and quality time.

We are WAY overexposed as humans. How many times a day are you bombarded with an ad or subliminal coercing to buy something. Snack, soda machines, supplies and even stupid trinkets are now in elementary schools (don't send your kids with more cash than lunch). We get hit on the Internet, TH-cam, other social media, busses, cars, your favorite shows, musicians and their songs, commercials on tv, buildings, billboards, clothing your friend wears. How many times have your kids or somebody else not know what they wanted around Christmas, so they peruse catalogs and BOOM! They really want it now! They didn't needed it 5 minutes before, but now they do. We no longer buy out of necessity so companies have us by our feet because we are WEAK as individuals.

It's called free market capitalism, with the emphasis on free, they are free to advertise to their hearts content, and we as consumers are free to choose to buy or not, no one forces you to purchase anything, that's what living in a free society is all about, that's why obamacare is bad, because it is the only time in America that you are forced to buy something or face a penalty, that's not freedom, that's called communism.

Well said. I understand the problems of advertising but I'd rather live in my home country of Canada where ads are everywhere than in places like Cuba or North Korea where their are authoritarian restrictions on advertising and the government also controls the distribution of products produced in their country. Capitalism has its problems, sure, but I fear big government far more than I fear big business. No government should tell someone what they should buy, what they should sell, or how they should market. Unless the marketing strategy has serious legal and/or ethical concerns, it should be allowed.

    • @jcarter3238
      @jcarter3238 8 ปีที่แล้ว

Kind of twisted the message; the last sentence said it all though. It's not an advertising problem, it's a people problem. PEOPLE could completely change the entire market and what's pushed with their power as a consumer. And per usual, the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world. If you raise your kids to prioritize and separate wants and needs, and to understand marketing and advertising, they would recognize the exposure to manipulate your spending, and they would stand a much better chance of becoming more responsible consumers. Companies will not spend boat loads of money advertising or manufacturing items or services they think or know won't sell. That was my point.

Intrinsic value and finding meaning in the work you do is important. Social relationships are important, etc. But we need to recognize the problems involved with central planning and trying to "engineer" an utopian society. The road to hell is paved in good intentions.
As mises and hayek pointed out, the free market provides us with a decentralized system of information in society that simply can't be replaced by centralized planning.
I'd prefer the freedom to pursue a my idea of a deeply fulfilling life in a free society vs having someone else's idea of what is best for me forced upon me by a socialist regime.

Am I missing something here???
On a side note, the US is not a communist country. It's somewhere between capitalism and what was coined as market socialism back in the 30's and 40's.

One has to be careful with terms here. Materialism isn't the problem as much as one's attitude toward material goods is. If a person understands that happiness is more a product of outlook, attitude and priorities than of possessions, then material possessions can play a limited role in fulfillment. After all, it's through the material world that we all reach one another. The problem is the now rampant misguided conflation of possessing material goods (or the potential for owning them as expressed in monetary accumulation) with quality of life.
There are many materialistic people and societies that know the place of material possessions, that use material goods to enhance quality of life, and that do not allow material possessions to interfere with happiness. The key is to have common sense priorities, ones that are poorly represented by perverse capitalism, where raising capital with the ostensible objective of accumulating as much monetary wealth and as many material possessions as possible is paramount. That is an illness.
Dysfunctional materialism often stems from deep-rooted anxiety, fear of poverty, fear of ridicule, fear of humiliation, need for control, and/or need for power. It can stem from seemingly positive traits such as desire for admiration, desire to achieve, or desire to provide, but these are often just the flip side of the negative drives. Even when they are not, they can cause destructive results as the "zero sum game" is a real phenomenon, though rarely acknowledged these days in the long-accepted "rising tide raises all boats" common ideology.

You epitomize the problem with people: the lack of unique, individual, critical thought. No one should provide you with answers, for the same reason no "thing" should provide you with happiness. All of the answers, all of the happiness, resides within us, intrinsically, if we take time to search it out. You must think for yourself. Sure, engage in discourse with others, collaborate with other minds, but in the end, you must learn how to generate and arrive at answers for yourself.

The real individuals at fault here are the ones that cannot think for themselves and try to place the blame for bad decisions on fictional forces that compel them. ANY human has the ability to stop and think critically about their situation. Take responsibility for your own actions and decisions by seizing your own personal freedom; do not let other people delude you into believing that your freedom is an illusion of subliminal control.

The desire of the eyes and the showy display of one’s means of life [do] not originate with the Father.-1 John 2:16.
John mentioned “the desire of the eyes” as an enticement. The expression suggests that one can begin desiring something by simply looking at it. Note that Satan “showed [Jesus] all the kingdoms of the inhabited earth in an instant of time; and the Devil said to him: ‘I will give you all this authority and the glory of them.’” (Luke 4:5, 6) Jesus would not with his literal eyes see all the kingdoms in an instant, but Satan must have felt that the glory of these kingdoms, as presented in a vision, would hold some attraction for Jesus. Shamelessly, Satan suggested: “If you do an act of worship before me, it will all be yours.” (Luke 4:7) In no way did Jesus want to be the kind of person Satan wanted him to be. His response was immediate. He said: “It is written, ‘It is Jehovah your God you must worship, and it is to him alone you must render sacred service.’”-Luke 4:8.

why is everyone I know on a competitive streak?
why are we constantly comparing ourselves to other people
only to end up ruining potential relationships that
in some way could change our lives for the better?
I think this phenomenon is responsible for the degradation
of human relationships, especially in the dating world.
But where does it come from? How? And why does it happen?
from the link below- I've managed to extract bits of data
to support my thesis and this is only the beginning-
what will my research lead to? What will unfold?
Let's look at this piece right here by Carol Thompson
"Ultimately, the “rat race” is created by comparing our accomplishments,
our joys, our challenges, our feelings, our pains, our experiences… to others.
We wouldn’t compare if we weren’t concerned with knowing where we stood near them, but this also gives birth to the never-ending feeling that you’re simply not getting there.
I consider the rat race of life to be a myth.
It’s created by our conception that we have to be
a specific way or be better or on par,
or worse (for that matter) than someone else."
SOUNDS LIKE A TACTIC FOR DIVIDE AND CONQUER, AYE?
the American system (capitalism) is a deteriorating scheme
that was meant to fall-apart and pin people against
each other, hence leading to the downfall of Rome in only a
    matter of time.
Here's what I find very interesting- the following paragraph
by Carol reads "If we were simply happy with who we are, and sought things out because we simply wanted to see them there -
then the rat race doesn’t truly exist, it’s simply our life."
Pay attention to the details of this sentence- specifically on the line
that says "If we were simply happy with who we are." Does anything on television,
social media, the news, etc. provoke individuals to be happy with who they are?
    Hell no!
All of this is part of a mission of cynicism and coercion which is implemented
in various platforms across the U.S. mainly the public education system-
which has promoted narcissism for years and continues to breed entitlement and insensitivity for passive sheep.
    valuable resources of the elite:
capitalism- consumerism- narcissism- divide and conquer

I have lots of tools, and I've loaned them to neighbors and friends, or done work for them to help them out. I've also had friends lend me certain pieces of equipment that I've needed to do things around my place. I try to maintain my vehicle so it lasts longer, and won't be sent to the junk yard way too early. I compost what I can, and reuse it in my garden, but I don't beat on others about doing it. The young generation today are a generation of instant gratification. Everything is so readily available now. i guess i was a sucker for this in 6th grade when i would call Wal Mart over and over again to see if they had gotten in another copy of The Legend of Zelda....

Years ago, I saw a kid walking around and using his hand as an airplane in make shift flight. Now, I see kids staring at their devices. Materialism kills creativity.

I am only materialistic when it comes to video games. I can live a crappy late 90's car and bed, 6 year old TV, 4 year old computer and more than 2 year old phone. I would be happier of course if I could get a girlfriend. But this has nothing to do with being materialistic.

I hate having stuff, it's in the way, i have to clean it, i have to iron it, carry it, it breaks, replace it, spend money on it... not that i want an empty modern house... these types of people usually still buy a lot of stuff.

Here's what we have done: We killed our TV (but download what we DO want to watch). We read more, & spend more time together. We also spend more time outdoors which helps our health as well as our mental well-being. We work for broader social change: including things like rescuing dogs, helping our neighbors, and going out in the neighborhood in door-to-door ministry. It is amazing how much money we have saved! And even better yet, how our physical, mental, and spiritual happiness has increased.

This is a masterful creation; akin to a book that was lauded for its masterful storytelling. "The Joy of Less: A Minimalist Living Guide" by Matthew Cove
