When Van Gogh died 1890, he was a complete unknown, his paintings fetching under 10 dollars. So how did his works become some of the most revered and expensive in the world? His sister-in-law Johanna is to thank for that.
That’s utter nonsense. At the time of his death he was starting to get critical acclaim from the art world. To say he was a complete unknown is tripe. People like you are responsible for spreading misinformation. Stick to the truth!
@@ubiq6348 when you adjust for inflation his paintings were fetching $3000 each after his death, not bad for someone who couldn't sell his pictures in life
As an art student back in 1980, I spent my first summer reading Van Gogh's volumes of letters. It took me 2 months. Ever since then, some 40 years, I have written articles and blogs asking why Johanna Van Gogh has not been given the credit she deserved. Finally that plea has been resolved. It was about time.
Theo needs credit too. He bought the paintings and supported his brother emotionally as well as financially. What Johanna did was take Theo's vision of his brother and hang on to it, believe in it, and run with it. You're totally right about her finally getting the credit she very much deserves.

Well Theo's wife Joanna probably needed to make money to live. I read all Vincent letters to Theo. He seemed very self centered and constantly wanting.... and it must have been exhausting for Theo. Such a gd brother. Great doco!

Van Gogh is absolutely my favorite artist ❤

No.

Good evening everyone
The “Myth” continues. Nothing remains the same……..
Martin Bailey looks like Picasso in one of his self portraits.
Johanna Bonger must have been quite an individual.
Van Gogh makes me want to be a beautiful human
What do you mean?
Typical of the hypocrisies and snobbery of the art world that paintings once considered worthless, painted by a madman, are now worth millions.
Never realized that the pronunciation of his last name is not “go.”
It's not "Goff" either. It's distinctively dutch. More like Ch-o-ch, like the J in spanish José.
Raiders of the lost art? What's the tie in to Vincent? His art was never lost.
Lost ART is the title. Catch up, love. The series is all about Art. Not arks.
Van Gogh would vomit if he knew what his work was selling for and how many millions of people could be raised out of poverty for the same amount.

What is the proper pronunciation of Van Gogh? The narrator and that woman pronounce it Van GoghF and it's kinda making me crazy 🤪
You can listen it on his wikipedia page :)

Simply untrue. The dutch G is also found in german, swiss german, austrian and even the spanish J as in José is quite the same sound.
Conspiracy theory. She was an aspiring artist who painted most of them and used his name after he died.
