    I happen to like pleats. I like that old fashioned look, depends what you're going for.

      same w pinstripes. i've seen timberlake in them, and it's worked without him looking like he's in the sopranos.

      I agree. Pleats are better, but only if they’re double or single forward (inward) or reverse (outward). Turn ups on trousers are better, too, except for formal wear (where turn ups on trousers are a faux pas).
      On coat and jacket cuffs, turn ups all the way (including formal wear).

    Nice information packed concise video. Only things I slightly disagree with is I'm not a follower of fashion (but do like to look stylish and occasionally different from the crowd) and would still consider a 3 button suit if the fit and styling was right (I have a couple of jackets like that and they look great). Also I've heard the don't button the bottom button mantra so many times. I'd instead say experiment for yourself with it done up and not done up. Play around with it and see what it looks like

    Most points are valid, except pleats. Ultimately whether the pleated look works depends on the cut of the trousers.
    You can have a slimmer cut pants with pleats and it will still look sharp, while ensuring the pleat gives extra room around the thighs.

    All this is very correct. Especially last 2.
    Get a slim fitting suit if you got a fit body and get a tailor. The extra $60 for adjusting measurements is worth it. Have the sleeves a bit short as to have your dress shirt pop out of them and do a pocket square.
    I spend like $350 at Mens Warehouse and people swear up and down its Armani or custom fitted $1500 suit.

      Personally, I like one button jackets myself. Why have all of those functional button on the front exterior if only one will be used. It’s wasteful.
      I agree on pleats, but only if it’s one or two inward or outward pleat(s) on each side. Outside of formal wear, turn ups only on trouser bottoms and turn ups only on coat and jacket sleeve cuffs (including formal wear).

    also:
    1. Thin lapels are more into fashion these days. (more modern looking)
    2. So are double back slit jackets
    3. Shirt cuffs should be visible underneath your jacket sleeves (just like the black guy has them)
    4. A perfect fit should have no creases around shoulder/arm and chest/top button area of the jacket.
    4. Your Belt color should match the color of your shoes.
    5. Your Tie should not hang below belt/waist line

      3 piece suits are fantastic. The vest can have an incredible slimming effect because it places your gut, which will protrude as a fat person, as part of the color block of the rest of the suit so it's not as obvious.
      Stick with wider (but not super wide) ties if you have a wider chest- the current trend has a lot of skinny ties but they look bad on fat people.
      Also, don't do this if you work in an office environment, but consider bow ties and high button stances. The two together have the effect of drawing the eye to your chest. A lower button stance and a necktie draw the eye up and down the torso which is flattering on someone in shape, but not flattering for a fat person. Fat people are the few people who can still look really good in bow ties.

    This video was an old favorite of mine when I first started out but some things stated are either not entirely true or haven't aged well:
    1. Three button coats can be flattering on taller guys but so can a well-proportioned two-button. I am especially a huge fan of six-on-two double breasted for daywear ond four-on-one for dinner jackets.
    2. Some guys absolutely have to have pleats if they have big thighs, regardless of age. I especially love high-rise trousers and suspenders but I would probably keep flat front as I don't need pleats necessarily.
    3. Black suits are overrated and lack versatility compared to charcoal, navy, or grey. Black is typically reserved for formal wear or funerals. Chalk stripes are generally a better option than pinstripes for city suits but sometimes you may want a slightly bolder pattern.
    4. Slim cut is now on its way out the door and although you do want a nice hug, a full cut can be really flattering as it hides your flaws. Keep in mind however that full does not necessarily mean boxy or baggy. You definitely don't want it to be baggy or bunch up. If you have a really atypical build, custom suits may be necessary. Even if you do have a fairly standard build, off-the-rack can be adjusted to fit you well but it will never fit you perfectly because humans are asymmetrical. Again, this is a caveat. Most guys can wear off-the-rack well enough but you may still have things like collar gapping. I for one have certain fit issues with off-the-rack due to my curved posture and slight belly. Otherwise I have a standard rectangular build.

    Good video , one thing to watch for is too large arm holes , Very costly to fix .

  • @Jimbo8012
    @Jimbo8012 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Some of the advice here is good but some of it is bad. Generally most people buy suits that are usually one size too large - arms, jacket and pants are too long, noticeable collar gap etc. This is evident by the white guy wearing the black suit.
    Yet, there are issues with the black guy's blue suit too. Seems to be slight sleeve pitch issues on the arm, there's a noticeable pull on the chest as the jacket is too tight, the pants are about 1/2 inch too short as there should be a small break in the front crease (an unbroken crease means your pants are too short) and no man should ever wear a belt with a suit as his pants should fit perfectly.
    The current trend is to buy tight fitting suits which can also present their own problems - noticeable shoulder divots (usually a result of the armhole being too narrow), & the dreaded x because it's too tight on the chest and waist.
    In addition, buying a slim/skinny fit suit with narrow lapels isn't terribly wise as they'll date horribly - think of 70's suits with the extremely wide lapels and you'll get the idea.
    3 Button suits can work and many design houses like Brioni, Kiton, Canali and Savile Row Tailors still produce this style in abundance. Nevertheless, you need to be quite tall (minimum 6 ft) to pull this look off. Some people can actually look better in this style especially if they're unusually tall (6 ft 4+).

    • @fernie51296
      @fernie51296 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your suit should always be slim as it should be close to the body. I agree though I'm not really for the tight fitting look. As for wearing a belt, you most certainly can and SHOULD wear a dress belt but never should you NEED it. And you don't have to have a break. You can either go with full break, half break or no break. No break or half break looks the best imo as it just comes across as a bit more elegant, a bit more attention to detail. Anything higher than no break is showing ankle and that is fashion forward indeed. Nothing wrong with fashion forwardness, but for beginners one needs to be careful.

  • @DylanOB

    Hey guys, So I have a suit that fits perfectly everywhere but one place; the sleeves. I'm not sure how to explain it but basically the "armpit" is too low, which means when I raise my arms all the shoulder comes up. Instead of where the sleeve meets the body of the suit going straight up into my armpit, it sits about an inch below and I haven't seen any videos or articles about it. Any advice?

      @gandaruvu 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      sadly, it's pretty hard to get good suits for bigger people off the rack. Try to ask around and look around for good tailors around your neighbourhood. It might be pricier, but it will suits you better than off the rack suit, and the tailor can easily change the measurement whenever you need some changes.

      The advice might not be that perfect, but it's pretty good for beginners! And for prom, always remember not to rent those typical cheap rental colourful tuxedos many people wear. Go with a well suited suit. You'll probably be one of the best dressed person there, and you can use that suit for many other occasions. If you have some extra money, then go wear a classic looking tuxedo, and be that james bond you always wanted to be!

    Flat front skinny suits are fashionable, but doesn't have to be a style. For a stocky gentlemen, 3 button suits and longer cut is OK. Pleated pants and longer cuff necessarily isn't a no-no, rather; it is up to the gentleman's particular taste. A view contrary to that is snobbery

      @@siblilngs101 If you're a bigger man, you have the choice between sausage casing slim flat front pants and actually comfortable pleated pants. I know what option I'll take everytime.

    I was going to get a jacket to wear with my black jeans, then bought a very nice suit as the jacket was cool, and I have a nice suit if required.
    The jacket looks great with my jeans. Sorry about that.

      Oh, you're right about the rest of it, though I personally don't like the two button jackets with only one button attached. Also, I just watched it again and noted you were bagging using a black jacket with pants as a suit substitute, not a jacket and black jeans for a more informal look, as I did. Ahhhhh, I now also realise you were talking about FORMAL wear. Ahem. As for size, couldn't agree more, and yup, get a nice suit and talk to a tailor.

    I'm 5'10" and weigh in around 260 something. Looking a little square because my coat isn't snug is a good thing.

    What if you like 1930s style? There is no problem pinstripe, or pleats or more relaxed fits!

    I find this video to be very misinformative.
    Yes, most of the points are correct. Such as not faking a suit, and to have the suit fitted. However, regarding points 2, 3 and 4 you are truly misleading people not knowing better. Let me explain:
    - A three button suit can look just as good (or even better) than a two button suit. It just creates a slightly more formal/vintage look.
    - Pleats can look absolutely stunning. I personally only wear pleated trousers because I am a slim man and it creates a more balanced silhouette by giving my legs more width.
    - "Only subtle colours"? what kind of rule is that? A suit should express something. It is not merely a uniform. The most stylish men throughout history have been wearing some quite colourful and flamboyant suits (Edward VIII, for instance). This rule makes no sense.

      I see your point. But the video should be slightly less absolute. Three button suits and pleated trousers can look great, but they are much more difficult than two buttoned suits and flat front trousers, to create a good outfit with. Because of the power of the trends.

      alright so your first two points are spot on. but when you suggest to wear flamboyant colors, that is crossing the line. at this point, just wear a clown suit. what's the difference right? you are just expressing yourself.

    "no pleats" = opinion. flat fronts and pleated trousers are a matter of preference. there are cons and benefits to both, and the variable is someones build.
    the jacket cut focused on in this is also an opinion.
    there are slim fit, tailored cuts, and traditional cuts. again, each has a pro and con, and the variable is again a persons build.
