That's the most beautiful thing looking up and seeing the snow fall like that. Very cool, thanks for sharing.

Unfortunately, I was in my seat on a plane without my camera when I and a coworker on a business trip to Salt Lake City were flying back to Denver and we witnessed what must compete with the 15" Montana monster snowflake. It was May the 1st of 1994 or 5 or 6, I believe, when Terry and I were seated on a commercial flight waiting to take off from the airport in Salt Lake City. It was cool and raining fairly steadily as we sat on the tarmac and watched with interest as the ground crews sprayed the jetliner with de-icer. Then, all at once, the rain changed over to snow; nothing remarkable at first ... just a wet spring snow. But, little by little, the flakes began sticking together until they were all several inches across. At last, just moments from our departure, a snowflake of such gargantuan proportions fluttered down that, when it alit on a groundcrewman's head, it completely covered it AND his shoulders with room to spare. The excess fell to the ground around him. Then there were more of these impossible snowballs landing all around us and on the plane. We guessed they were upwards of 20" or more across and 4 or 5" thick, but we unable to get out to measure them, and I've found no mention of the incident anywhere else. I suppose it remains Terry's and my personal observation of the biggest snowflakes ever. I will affirm that the above statements are true and you are welcome to investigate with whatever source you can find, including the Salt Lake City weather station.

This kind of snow usually falls when temperatures are around 32f

In The Netherlands these are called "chickenplumes" and they are pretty usual and tend to fall with temperatures near freezing. Also, when warmer air enters the region you start off with very fine dry snowfall. Once the flakes get bigger you know the thaw is coming. The high moisture content is the reason because it makes the flakes sticky. In fact we had this kind of snow the last couple of days.

saw potato chip sized flakes in Twin Falls ID in 1985 (same year that I saw snow-rollers) - you could hear them land.

This is kind of like mixed precipitation. Or like wet with dry snow. It normally forms really big snowflakes.
