  • The Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask remains one of the most bizarre entries in the series. The game's four giants are also strange, but they harken back to many other guardian deities found in ancient cultures and religions. Let's talk about giants, directions, elements, and Termina.

Another thing worth noting with Majora's Mask and it's heavy connection to the number 4 is that in Japan the number 4 is considered an unlucky number similar to how 13 is unlucky for us. This is because the Japanese words for death and 4 are both pronounced "shi". Makes sense as Termina and it's civilians are under the threat of death for the entirety of the game.

Nice video! Great info and detail... but that was an unnecessarily loud volume jump in the outro. I had to crank down the volume super fast.

i believe there was originally going to 4 sages in The Wind Waker but were cut to just 2, Medli is the sage of Earth and Makar is that sage of forest which leads me to believe there was originally going to be 4 sage dungeons, Fire Water Wind and Earth, also something worth noticing is that The wind Temple is very forest theme and the two infamous cut dungeons were fire and water themed

I think we also would've navigated Hyrule to get to these temples. I've been replaying Wind Waker recently, and the King of Red Lions says that normally, we'd be able to get to the temples from Hyrule, but because of Ganon's barrier, we can't. So, in other words, "because we never had time to finish the game, you can't."

It'll never happen but it would be great to get a definitive edition of Wind Waker that includes all the things they left on the cutting room floor because of time constraints.

i miss the old days when game theory had just released and the videos were actually about real world coincidinces with videogames rather than just lore deep dives. Either way, this video gives that feel, that a video game might have implied a certain connotation and you have it make sense by being articulate about the matter, great work!

So many mysteries surrounding Majora’s Mask. Amongst the bigger mysteries is this Goddess of Time as mentioned in the flashback of Princess Zelda and, immediately afterwards, by Tatl. An event called the Carnival of Time is held every year in Termina, which is also associated with this mysterious Goddess. The Four Giants are supposedly her servants too. There have been many speculations about who the Goddess of Time is. Most have concluded to have been Hylia. In Hyrulean context, Hylia seems much closer to the Goddess of Wisdom, Nayru. In the mythology, Nayru created the laws of physics, motion, and the passage of time with her very gentleness. When the Golden Goddess trio entrusted the Triforce in the care of Hylia, she also had not just the power of light of the golden three, but the power to manipulate time itself as demonstrated in Skyward Sword. Hylia better fits this description. But we’re met with a setback. Termina bears no influence of the Triforce or any of Hyrule’s deities. Despite this, Hylians, humans, Dekus, Gorons, Zoras, and Gerudos all coexist. The Sheikah, while having no appearance at all, still had their influence spread throughout Termina in the forms of Sheikah Stones. So some influence of Hyrule’s deities was bestowed in Termina, not just the sudden appearance of the Hero of Time with the Triforce of Courage in his hand. Though influenced or not, there have been many loose depictions of the Triforce (removed in the 3DS version for reasons unknown). Possibly to imply Ikana’s link to Hyrule (or rather in the Gerudo Desert beyond Hyrule’s border) as the devastating war it fought took place literally between dimensions, though the details remain obscure.

I still strongly believe that Majora's Mask was originally conceptualized as a completely different game, not even in the Zelda series. It just feels so out of place in this franchise in so many ways.
My guess is, the concept was liked, but they didn't think it would sell well and didn't want to fund the making of a whole new game that they weren't really sure about. So instead they had it made with OoT's engine and assets, very loosely connected it to OoT's story, and slapped the Zelda logo onto it- and boom, instant sales.
And I don't mean this in a bad way. It's a good game. But it's just *not* a Zelda game. Feel free to disagree, I couldn't give less of a shit, but this is how I see it.

I think part of what makes it work is also that Nintendo only had a year to get this thing out and no time to second guess themselves.
