And I often start my pole too far forward to have it do any good. I use the pole as a rudder with most retrievals, probably slowing me down but sometime its needed. I rub the pole along the boat as much as possible unless I'm trying to push it a bit to the side one way or the other. Great stuff as usual, Lisa.
That's a great point about using the pole as a rudder. If you’re touching the boat with the pole that’s making it track the straightest, going upstream or down. Thanks for watching!
You'll get me trying it eventually! I just have to overcome this"Don't stand in a canoe" phobia. Wishing you and yours a great Christmas. Thanks for the video.
Brilliant video, love the third tip, I will definitely try that and see if I have been suffering from an unintended steer as I recover the pole. Another tip I could offer if I may, from a good friend of mine and experienced poler, Which ever direction the end of the pole out of the water is pointing, when you push, that is the direction you’ll go. If it’s up, you lift, if it’s not pointing forward, you won’t go forward. That has helped me immensely when I’ve struggled up some rock infested ditches as a sort of pole compass!
It always helps when someone who poles can help it make sense to you. Poling definitely has a learning curve, I’ve never glossed over, but well worth it. Thanks for watching.
Never poled a canoe (65 yrs), but I want to learn. Looks fun and peaceful. Hope to come up to a symposium sometime. Love your channel.
It’s never too late to learn. My schedule comes out after the holidays and if I’m not running a trip I’ll be at MCS. Thanks for watching.
I love the big rudder effect a pole has. It can be very subtle.
Yes and so little effort. Like moving in a dream. Thanks for watching.
@@3_Minutes_With_a_Maine_Guide You're welcome! I always do.

Trust me, we are not building a rocket, anyone can pole, but what you NEED is a good teacher.
Baby poler here, Great tip on taking your time and the options for recovery
Glad to be of help! Thanks for watching.
Merry Christmas to all🎄

Absolutely love your videos, great job 👏
Thanks so much!
Thanks Lisa!
Thanks for the idea.
Like AC/DC (kinda) said. "It's a long way to the top if you wanna upstream pole"!
Oh no Lisa is about to call us out 😅
