I didn't know this song existed. My mother's name is Diane Young. My mother passed away when I was 7. This made my soul happy today. Thank you Vampire Weekend for this pleasant coincidence. :)
thats awesome! glad you have a nice song to enjoy that reminds you of your mom. My father passed when I was four and really enjoyed vampire weekend so theyre also a comfort artist since they remind me of him!
This is a little sad, given that Diane Young is meant to sound like "dying young"! But I'm glad that discovering this song was a happy accident for you. :)
"I love the past because I hate suspense." This is very simple lyric, yet so true to anyone who has human emotions. This is why I'm convinced that anyone who at least does not appreciate this band is cold and emotionless.
(Deleted) true. This band is only for the upper class WASPy hipsters because of their generally preppy, snobbish, ivy league lyrics. Its gotten better after their newest releases but still
Some of you are saying this video and the lyrics don't make sense. After listening to it a couple times my personal interpretation is that Diane Young is a homophone for "dying young". That's why the video shows a party scene to represent people who live dangerous lifestyles. Heck you saw that guy doing copious amounts of weed. Lets look at a verse; "Irish and proud, baby, naturally But you got the luck of a Kennedy So grab the wheel, keep on holding it tight 'Til you're tottering off into that good night" Irish alludes to the fact they can handle a lot of alcohol yet it goes on to say you have the luck of Kennedy, a president who was killed unexpectedly during a happy parade. Basically this whole song is saying if you aren't afraid to die because of your poor declensions then then its going to happen soon, or as time flies when you are having fun it will be "right on time"
this song is such a masterpiece. it captures the essence of high school for me. not in a particularly good way, but a beautiful and sad one. "out of control but you're playin the role" "if diane young won't change your mind, baby baby baby baby right on time". play the role of what a highschooler 'should be' and do what you need to do to do it no matter what the costs are, and if you don't care that one of those costs might be your life, then it'll be costing you right on time.

This song becomes a lot darker when you realise it’s a metaphor for how making stupid decisions as a young adult will eventually get you killed
I wouldn’t use the adjective "stupid", but "unlucky", which they refer to in the song, with the Kennedy tragedies.
