Keep in mind that Staubach only had 8 healthy seasons. Was healthy in 1971, ( but was hurt for the 72 season although he won his job back in the postseason) was healthy from 1973-1979. Went to 4 superbowls in 4 of those 8 years. Won 4 passing rating titles and retired as the best rated passer in history!! Staubach was third in passing yards and second in passing tds in the 70s in just 8 seasons! For quarterbacks who threw more than 2500 times in the 70s, no one comes close to Staubach's TD-to-interception ratio. He was ahead in passer rating (83.3) by a whole two percent from the guy in second place. Had the 4th lowest interception percentage of the decade. He was the most efficient and accurate quarterback to ever throw the ball before 1980. He was top 5 in every passing category of the 70s. Attempts Completions Yards Tds Int% Td% Passing rate Yards/per game Passing Avg No quarterback of the decade accomplished that. Tarkenton was the closest one. He won the second most games, Super Bowls, conference championships, and playoff games of the decade. Those were arguably 8 of the greatest years in nfl history for any player regardless of position when we compare eras and accomplishments. I had to cut a lot of things out because of copyright problems. Some of the clips were rushed! But in all in all it was a good video.
Roger is the main reason I became a Cowboy fan back in 1971 and have never looked back. I remember that 49er playoff game well. The family was going to San Jose to visit family and I bet my dad 50 cents that Dallas would win. When the game was down to about 2 min left I gave the 50 cents to my dad in defeat. Than Roger stepped in. I became 50 cents richer that day.
They don’t make ‘em like Staubach anymore. A great American! I never realized how many guys he quietly helped financially after football. Roger is an even better person than he was a player, if that’s possible. Great video!
Most people don't remember that Roger Staubach's last completed pass ever as a Dallas Cowboy was an illegal forward pass that he threw to one of his offensive linemen to avoid getting sacked in the very last football game that he ever played in. The Dallas Cowboys were defeated by the Los Angeles Rams at home in Texas Stadium in the divisional round of the NFC playoffs in late December of 1979 which turned out to be the final game that Staubach played in. He retired in March of 1980 at the age of 38 because he had suffered several concussions during the 1979-80 NFL season plus he was 37 years old at the time of his final game as a Dallas Cowboy Roger Staubach, in my opinion, wisely decide to retire from playing pro football. As a lifelong Dallas Cowboys fan, I thank Roger Staubach for the wonderfully great and incredibly amazing thrills, excitement and memories that he gave us and to his immeasurable contributions to the decade long success of the Dallas Cowboys in the 1970s.
Roger Staubach was my first Cowboys hero. I became a Cowboys fan in 1977, so unfortunately I only saw the tail end of his career, but back then I was always proud to be a Cowboys fan because of Roger Staubach. He got them over the hump and finally made the Cowboys champions. I was so sad when he retired, but will always be grateful for what he did for the Cowboys. He's a great man and great role model. Thank you for posting another excellent video!
Roger Thomas Staubach was my childhood hero. The greatest Dallas Cowboy ever. He is EVERYTHING you want in QB, and a childhood hero. Quite simply, a great American.
I was that kid who had a Staubach poster on one wall and a poster of the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders on the other and they both gave me an idea of what great men were supposed to be like and what great were supposed to be like!
Roger and his family owned a house in the Canyon Creek neighborhood in Richardson, TX in the early 70’s. I lived around a mile away and used to drive by his house, hoping I could catch him outside to get his autograph. It never happened but I did get Cliff Harris and Walt Garrisons autograph later.
Watching the Cowboys was a family event every Sunday...during Roger's tenure Mama became such a football fan she even quit cheering during "instant replays".
Fifty four years ago I hitched my wagon to "America's Team" and it's been a heck of a ride. Some painful experience's and and five Super Bowl wins and I'm happy, always the optimist. Of the current 32 Teams twelve have not won a Lombardi trophy. With super stats like the great Rodger "the dodger" Staubach, Drew Pearson, Dorsett and the Doomsday Defense led by the iconic Coach Tom Landry. Thank so much LC for such a wonderful job!!👏
Another excellent job my brother. Rodger was just bigger than life everybody talked about him people that didn't watch football talked about him your grandmother's talked about him which is why poor Danny White is what he is in Cowboys lore. Roger is the reason there are cowboy fans in Wyoming and Arizona before the Cardinals and in little towns all across America because he was America. The genius of tex schram the image of Tom and the Cowboys and the magic of Roger staubach is why Cowboys get Thanksgiving game every year and every 3:00 and prime Time game the NFL can cram them into. And without Roger well let's just say Craig Morton wasn't getting us there. Thank you for another great video about the greatest cowboy ever
LC MAY GOD BLESS YOU!!!!!! For us old Cowboy fans you bring to life the good old days! Another great video clearly showing the grit of what champions are made of! When he said “we will just find another way to win”. You could see that killer instinct in his eyes!!!! Made me want to lace up the old cleats and buckle that chinstrap….. Landry had always been my favorite Cowboy with Staubach and Aikman running close second, but by golly I’m moving Roger up there with Coach! Thanks again LC
Great video. The 1970s are the only decade in NFL history that saw passing stat deflation rather than inflation, which makes the fact that Staubach retired with the highest passer rating in NFL history at the time even more amazing.
Larger than life. I did a book report on Mr. Staubach in the sixth grade, the year he retired. He sits atop of the Legendary Dallas Cowboy’s, I know Mr. Lilly is known as Mr. Cowboy, (and it’s hard to argue that point) but to me it’s always been Roger. You’ve outdone yourself this time LC, great video, thank you!
Greatest all-around quarterback All-time up to 1980 but may have been the best of all time since the rules changed to favor offense and passing mostly after his retirement!
Great video as always. He was a navy supply officer like me. I vaguely remember his son coming through the Dallas navy processing office when I was doing a 3 month stint there right after I graduated from OCS.
There's been a handful of quarterbacks that could run like him, but he won in the playoffs. He won Super bowls. He won passing titles. When the chips were down he came back. I believe he had more come from behind victories to anybody else even to this day. Best quarterback in cowboy history and that saying something
That’s a great video!!! Roger Staubach was like a Marvel comic book hero stepped onto the football field. Those Cowboys were so classy that I truly didn’t care if they beat my Steelers. I perceived Roger as always being on the side of the good guys. Probably the best QB of the 1970s. Would’ve been the 60s too if he hadn’t been serving his country in the military. The Cowboys were never out of a game as long as Staubach was playing.
He had the ability to outsmart a defense on the fly. The only other QBs that I can think of that can do that with ease and consistency was Randall Cunningham and now Lamar Jackson. That's something that can't be taught or coached, either a guy has that or he doesn't and most just don't. It's now hard to believe that right before the start of training camp in 1971 Staubach went to Tom Landry and told him that if he wasn't going to start he was going to quit football and go back to Cincinnati to sell insurance. Tom Landry was beginning to see the light that Staubach was the better QB on the roster and told him that he might want to stick around for a while.
I got three words: Simply the best! Roger Staubach is my all-time favorite athlete and human. He was my childhood hero...he's the reason I will be a Cowboy fan for life 🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈
Roger Staubach is my childhood hero! He's also my all-time favorite Quarterback today. I became a Football fan in 1975 at the age of ten. He was a man of class, masculinity, character, morality, leadership, and composure. As a Quarterback, he was an excellent leader and a tough, competitive, and phenomenal player and athlete. He was also exceptionally intelligent. He was a brave and athletic scrambler and running QB. As a passer, he had a rocket arm, quick-release, and deadly accurate! He destroyed his opponents! My all-time favorite COWBOYS team was circa 1978. It's these teams that are responsible for AMERICA'S TEAM persona and legend! That's why the DALLAS COWBOYS are still AMERICA'S team today and the most popular and wealthy sports franchise on the entire planet! Roger Staubach and Tony Dorsett will always be my favorite Football players for life! May God bless them both.

In some ways Coach Landry's inflexible ways held Roger back. If Roger had played with the teams that Terry Bradshaw was on it would have been amazing. I admire Terry but he made a lot of mistakes that the defense bailed him out on time and again. I will go to my grave believing the Cowboys beat the Colts by double digits if Roger would have played in Super Bowl five.
Sorry dude I'm just now getting a chance to watch your video and what a video it is Roger Staubach I guarantee he still is haunted by the Jackie Smith dropped that pass in the Super bowl Dallas should have beat the Steelers that day
Best QB in NFL history. Sure, he doesn’t have the stats of modern players. The 70’s was the toughest decade to throw the ball, but he retired with the highest passer rating in history up to that point.
LC; once again GREAT VIDEO!!!!!!! My first conscious memory of a Cowboy QB was Roger Staubach and he played until I was thirteen. I had an autographed photo of him on top of a pendant pinned by my bed. I'm not one to worship athletes, especially at my age now, but all that goes out the window when you talk about #12. Dallas trailing buy a touchdown or more in the late 4th Quarter was never unusual and Staubach pulling out the game was the normal. Staubach played against some brutal defenses before all the rule changes which makes his records that more impressive. I can't express how popular he was during those days and still is especially with us old people. Here's a quick video of Ed O'Neil talking about playing against Staubach. Thanks again for all your work. th-cam.com/video/pVIz0i99dvk/w-d-xo.html
I say Roger is better because he could scramble and improvise. Aikman was more accurate, but needed a solid system to be a top tier QB. Roger was one of the first real dual threat as a great passer and running QB after Fran Tarkenton
@@thelogicalcowboy I'm a Staubach fan from day one. I still remember when he whooped Craig Mortons ass in practice and then beat his ass again in the superbowl after Morton took over the helm for Denver.
My Favorite & I Love This Man! Also, Coach Belichick used to play catch with Him! The only guy I trust to go head to head with The GOAT- Joe Montana! I Wish Capt. COMEBACK would have ran for President
HUGE SHOES to fill for Danny White & Troy Aikman. I often debate who was the best. I still am confident that no other NFL team possess the greatness at the QB position like the Dallas Cowboys historically have. Every team has two greats (sonetimes 3 if you include inflated regular season stat collector QBs) but the Cowboys have Merideth, Staubach, White, Aikman, Romo, and Prescott. There is no comparison to this list.
Great movie. Roger, however, was never a Freshman at the Naval Academy. His Freshman year he attended and played at the New Mexico Military Institute, and transferred to Navy. Thus, he didn’t lose any eligibility.
I explained in the video that he didn't lose any eligibility in college because he played at New mexico Military Institute. I shouldn't have said Freshman. Glad you liked the video.
He wouldn't have gone to the Cowboys that's for sure. Remember no one drafted Staubach because they knew he wasn't going to play ball until 69 due to his millatary obligations. Dallas took a chance. He probably would been drafted at the top of the draft in 64 had he gone to Notre Dame. Dallas would have stayed with Morton until his career was over and probably wouldn't have become America's team.
And that's why children dallas cowboys are America's team ! It doesn't matter if you like it ! Thats why cowboys are the top team marketing wise and top selling team they are americas team This man is why -9er fan.
Well Kyle dad was an offensive coordinator under dan Reeves to technically he is part of the Landry coaching tree.the talking heads on tv wont admit it though
Rodger Staubach was and still is the Dallas Cowboys in my book. That's just my opinion. I don't know why Tom Landry didn't keep Rodger Staubach as the Dallas Cowboys #1 QB. Rodger Staubach was the Dallas Cowboys QB when I was growing up. I found out just like everybody else why Rodger Staubach Retired after watching A Football Life of Rodger Staubach on NFL NETWORK! There's no telling how many more Super Bowls the Dallas Cowboys could have won if Tom Landry had kept Rodger Staubach as the #1 QB! Karma caught up with Tom Landry when Jerry Jones bought the Dallas Cowboys! Just like he let Rodger Staubach Retire, Jerry Jones Retired him, replacing him with Jimmy Johnson! This just go to show, if you wrong someone, it's coming back to you!

Thank you for those kind words!😊 Don dandy or dandy Don 😆 I always get that mixed up lol. But yeah he was spectacular and a highly underrated QB! I wish I had the chance to see him play. Thanks again!
I thought I had posted a comment but I can't find it. Another simply superb video that rightfully appreciates and lionizes a brilliant athlete, quarterback, leader, and human being.
Thanks bro!!
Wow, I haven't heard names like Scott Laidlaw, Lance Alworth, Duane Thomas and Billy Joe Dupree. TLC if you haven't already, check out the Legends Show: Billy Joe Dupree is highlighted this Dallas Cowboy player-check it out, anyone who wants. THE SARGE
Appreciate you SARGE
Many of Roger's best years may very well of been when he kept his commitment to serve our country in the NAVY🇺🇸
I agree
Staubach is what every parent, every normal parent wants their son to be... He is a man that commits himself to a cause.
He's stainless... He's
All American 🇺🇸
He was JFK's favorite football 🏈 player
He took the COWBOYS to the Super Bowl 4 times in 8 years
He won 4 NFC Championship 🏆🏆🏆🏆 games and 2 Super Bowls 🏆🏆
He won the Heisman Trophy 🏆
He was All-Pro
He went to the
Pro Bowl multiple times
He won the NFL passing title multiple times
He retired with the highest passer rating in NFL history 83.5
He's Roger the Dodger
Captain Comeback
Captain America 🇺🇸
The Jolly Roger 🏴☠️
He completed the
Hail Mary 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Etc
Etc
Etc
He has a pretty good resume' 🇺🇸❤️🤍💙⚓
Vietnam Vet 🇺🇸❤️🤍💙
In some ways Coach Landry's inflexible ways held Roger back. If Roger had played with the teams that Terry Bradshaw was on it would have been amazing. I admire Terry but he made a lot of mistakes that the defense bailed him out on time and again. I will go to my grave believing the Cowboys beat the Colts by double digits if Roger would have played in Super Bowl five.
I agree!
I think Captain America is the only hero who could pull the Cowboys out of the funk we're currently suffering.
Facts!
Sorry dude I'm just now getting a chance to watch your video and what a video it is Roger Staubach I guarantee he still is haunted by the Jackie Smith dropped that pass in the Super bowl Dallas should have beat the Steelers that day
Thanks bro! Yeah, that drop was brutal!
Roger the dodger was/ is an American Hero, the greatest Cowboy, and arguably the best QB ever, my opinion though.
Good opinion. He should be in that conversation with the rest of them.
Agreed 👍🏾 💯
And only Roger can claim the original hail mary
Facts
Best QB in NFL history. Sure, he doesn’t have the stats of modern players. The 70’s was the toughest decade to throw the ball, but he retired with the highest passer rating in history up to that point.
He was skilled the football 🏈 dallas cowboys 🤠 😊

The greatest Cowboy QB of all time
All time! Although my favorite quarterback Is Troy Aikman.
@@thelogicalcowboy I'm not mad at that.
I go between Roger Staubach and Joe Montana as being the greatest QB in Football history.
Roger Staubach is my all-time favorite QB regardless!
Yes, and it's not even close
I say Roger is better because he could scramble and improvise. Aikman was more accurate, but needed a solid system to be a top tier QB. Roger was one of the first real dual threat as a great passer and running QB after Fran Tarkenton
Patrick Mahomes has proven to me that he is about the closest thing to Roger that has ever lived and he really is a native Texan.
Mahomes was a die-hard Cowboys fan!
🔥 🔥
HUGE SHOES to fill for Danny White & Troy Aikman. I often debate who was the best. I still am confident that no other NFL team possess the greatness at the QB position like the Dallas Cowboys historically have. Every team has two greats (sonetimes 3 if you include inflated regular season stat collector QBs) but the Cowboys have Merideth, Staubach, White, Aikman, Romo, and Prescott. There is no comparison to this list.
I agree.
Did you know that Staubach failed the eye test for the Navy? He talked about it in A Football Life.
Yep. He was color blind I believe in one eye. Don't quote me.
I wonder what his career would have been if he had gone to Notre Dame like he originally wanted to.
Roger the Dodger
Facts
And that's why children dallas cowboys are America's team !
It doesn't matter if you like it !
Thats why cowboys are the top team marketing wise and top selling team they are americas team
This man is why
-9er fan.
Well Kyle dad was an offensive coordinator under dan Reeves to technically he is part of the Landry coaching tree.the talking heads on tv wont admit it though
Facts! can also add that Kyle Shanahan and Landry has scary similarities in their careers.
@@thelogicalcowboy yep
Emotionally attached. Anyone else remember he ran like a girl?
🍿 🍺 🇺🇸
If Dallas had Staubach today they would win the superbowl ( as long as Jerry Jones didn’t stick his nose in )
Rodger was the best of the best in Dallas.
He sure was! The goat Cowboy!
See you in heaven buddy
ima old kat, i was 5 in 1974 when i fell in love with the Dallas Cowboys. Cowboys are known for their QB, and the last good one they had was Troy. u bess not say Tony Homo..! love ur style and intake on sport bro. thanks. P.S. i low key love the Steelers too. lol
Appreciate that bro!
Ironically he was 0-3 in the Orange Bowl,He was 0-3 vs Fran Tarkenton in Texas Stadium. He was 1-7 vs quarterbacks that won the Super Bowl from the AFC during the 1970s.He is 82.The time he beat a QB from the AFC that won the super bowl during the 1970s was Bob Griese in SB 6.Griese was 2-1 against him & beat him in Texas Stadium in 1973 & the OB in 1978.Ken Stabler beat him in 1974.Terry Bradshaw was 4-0 against him.
@@generationll
Staubach is 4-2 vs Fran Tarkenton in the regular season. They are 1-1 in the post season.
In their head to head match-up over their careers. Staubach has better completion percentages. More tds. A higher td percentage. And a better passer rating.
You said that he's 1-7 vs AFC quarterbacks who won the superbowl in the 70s. OK? Montana was 1-2 vs the only AFC team of the 80s who won the sb (Raiders). Terry Bradshaw was 1-4 vs AFC teams who won the superbowl in the 70s. I'm not sure what your point is.
Better than Brady ....he allways copied Roger style. My all time fav QB....Roger the dodger.
Should have been a POTUS
Back when we could be proud of the Cowboys
Amen to That
Beauty
No doubt
They don't make football players like Roger, Drew, Randy and all of the players from the 70's today's game with the influx of gambling is fixed
