  • It this episode of Better Gear, the show about making gear better, we are going to talk about the Zoom Multi FX Pedal range (you know, the MS 50G, MS 60B, MS 70CDR, G1ON,...) and how to get all the algorithms into your stompbox with a simple hack. Pedal manufacturers hate this trick!!!
    Thanks to SHOEGAZER for the inspiration

    Hi. There is a snag you should be aware of. The flash memory of the processor in the pedal is of a type that is not made to be rewritten very often. Usually the endurance is around 1000 write cycles, but it could be far less. When the memory fails, you can throw away the pedal. Just be aware!

      Really? Only 1,000? That's only enough times to flash it once every week for the next 20 years. We better be super careful. Thanks for the heads up. Good looking out.

    Boris posted an updated version 1.1.1 that loads the latest zoom firmware version 2.1.0. I tested it on MS-70cdr , worked but it lets you choose 1 too many FX before the max memory bar turns red, so if the blue indicator bar Max’’d out but still blue it will fail when writing to the flash. So you have to de-select at least 1 FX from the list so the blue indicator has a little room at the end. yay Better Gear!

      The pedal stacking is great.
      But they don’t seem happy in the fx loop on my mixer, I have to stack with a Boss delay or something (which has a buffer).

    Just discovered this last week from some thread on the gearpage. I’ve since turned both my G1on’s into hybrids of the bass model, as well as stuck backup amp sims and drive options in both of my beloved MS-70’s. Took about a minute per pedal. Amazing!

    These Zoom pedals are really great small, portable units for the price. The ones with stereo inputs (like the MS-CDR70) especially rock for synths. I'll say that these FX are at least as good or better than the built-in FX included in most synths.

      There's a Reddit forum with zoom multi stomp fx settings that sound like other pedals. I found using these ready made ones quickly gave me a range of great sounds to start with, rather than having to fumble through dialling something usable myself. Also, a bipass loop pedal was a revelation, use a cheap bypass loop, put the zoom pedal in that loop, and the loop pedal then works like an on/off switch for the zoom in your signal chain. I have 2 zoom ms pedals in my signal chain now, so much fx versatility!

    I've added the effects that are unique to my MS60B on my MS70CDR. The MS60B only allows 4 effects in a chain. I've replaced my 60B with the 70CDR on my pedalboard. This in effect gives me an MS60B that can have 6 effects in a chain, which is very useful. Only problem I've encountered so far is with the pitch shifter. If I really need one, I'll stick it on my Zoom B3 pedal.

    Thanks much for bringing this to my attention. I own a similar unit, the boss se-70 and use it for quick and dirty sound manipulation often. If I can get the ms-50g and ms-60b algorithms on the stereo MS70-CDR , I'm sold (not that I expect stereo distortions ;) ). I just ordered. PS I use an MF Drive on my synths too. Great, overlooked unit. I wish I had picked up a used MF Delay before prices went through the roof.

Also, it opened my eyes to the fact that the 50g, 70cdr and the G1Xon are all the same under the hood with the exception of the enhancements to functionality of the G1Xon. Just a note, the B/G 1FOUR pedals and a few others aren't supported. This is because the older pedals use a different type of file for the algorithms. There is a second firmware manager out there that does support them though. There are issues with loading bass cabinet sims onto non-bass pedals which require an additional file being written along with the new effects. The 1FOUR pedals are compatible with effects from ZOOM G3X
    , ZOOM G3n, ZOOM G3Xn, ZOOM G5n, ZOOM B3n, ZOOM AC-2, ZOOM AC-3. The A1FOUR does not have a firmware file available online yet, but I don't see why it wouldn't work with it when one is posted. All the pedals mentioned in your vid are also supported. I have downloaded the file and run it, but haven't actually flashed either of my 1Four pedals with it yet so I can't comment on stability. The interface seems pretty self-explanatory. I plan to try it this weekend when I have time to sort out any problems I inevitably cause. Oh yh, it's on Github.com/Barsik-Barbosik/Zoom-Firmware-Editor. The effects on the older pedals are .zdl, the newer ones use .zd2. As far as I can tell, these are .dll files. I'm looking into whether I can edit existing effects or create my own. I'm not wasting my time writing a new manager. There's no point if these two programs work.

    • @RichMT001
      @RichMT001 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had a play around with it and there are problems. The B1FOUR firmware 2.0 is the same file as the G1FOUR firmware 2.0 file and contains only the effects for the G1FOUR. I can't find any earlier firmwares for the B1FOUR which do contain the effects. I extracted all ZD2 files from the firmware and from the AC2 and AC3 firmwares. The latest G3 firmware wasn't recognised. To create a B1FOUR firmware I would start with the 1.10 file (i I could find it), remove the effects I don't want and 'inject' the ones I do want from the other pedals and then save the firmware file. I will try with the G1FOUR at the weekend and inject AC2/3 effects. I could just wipe out my B1FOUR and see what happens.
      Reading some of the issues on Github it appears that the G1FOUR doesn't make it easy, but can be made to work. The B1FOUR is probably the same. May be more trouble than it's worth. My disappointment is almost tangible. Sorry for getting anyone's hopes up. Not least my own.

    • @burnerphone361
      @burnerphone361 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is another project "zoom-zt2" which supports the G1Four and other pedals using ZD2 effects. Some effects are specific to G1Four as they are single screen devices. And it is reported that some effects from G5 don't, presumably as they require more memory/processor power. Enjoy 😀

    I could get the MS60B (BASS) Effects, Amps, etc into my MS50G (GUITAR) , but I couldn't edit them in TONELIB Software Editor.
    It's a great software editor for editing the native Effects, Amps, etc I love it.
    But it wont recognise the Effects, Amps etc from the MS60B when you connect the MS50G as it registers which unit you have connected to it.
    My workaround to this is to use the Editor exclusively for the MS50G Presets & manually setup my Bass Presets later.
    I have both units but prefer to use the MS50G as you can chain 6 Effects per patch, whereas the MS60B can only do 4.
    I'm so glad I did not sell these powerful little Multi's, dragged them out of the cupboard & shook off the cobwebs .... I was that close !
    I really think the quality of most of the Effects & Amps are Ballsy & realistic & compare very well with my other bigger Multi-Effects cousins that I own

    • @dlabrador
      @dlabrador 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alexwestconsulting no hardware mods... MS-50G lets you select a short list of patches (assigns them a letter), and you can set it so the switch cycles through them (so start on patch A, press to go to B, press to go to C), and you use external loop to bypass (it's just a "hack" using stuff you may already have to squeeze a bit more flexibility out of it.) if you already have an appropriate toolset to rig it up for MIDI switching via USB that would be a way better solution, but one that would cost more money to implement than simply buying a more controllable multi effects unit at that point.

      This new effects editor is multilingual between all the pedals of this era. Makes sense Zoom would use same base hardware architecture and just vary software. Their strategic failure was to assume that by limiting midi access except for only the ms50g they shot themselves in the foot. Their new stuff has new hardware and better algorithms, but not that much better. If they were smart they'd kitify their own midi switching pedal addons to these legacy units and update this editor to revive this line. There are third parties doing this now.
