    thanks for really showing the difference in papers...... I love the more textured surfaces - they definitely show more depth & shading. On the other hand, these all look fantastic because you are such a great artist!

    Thank you for sharing this video. I have the same brush and it certainly doesn't behave like yours does. It just goes to show how an expert uses their tools. Big hugs and thanks again

    I found this video lesson to be so informative to me, as a newbie. I have a full set of watercolor pencils and the Inktense pencils, but haven't really sat down to try them out fully. I have played with them, and never thought about the different papers I was using. Yes, I noticed a difference in paper, but never really studied the difference in the finished product. I will be pulling out my watercolor pencils this weekend and the different papers to work with the same pencils & same stamp on my papers so I can practice this lesson first hand. Thank you for posting this video lesson for us.

    Thanks Sandy, this was very helpful. I always thought that hot press was better for me but now I think I have to try the cold press. 😉

    This was great information. I have only used cold press paper, but I think I might like the hot press better. I tend to like a smooth surface to paint (or color) on no matter what medium I'm using. When I did a lot of painting on wood pieces, I'd spend a lot of time sealing and sanding the wood so my brush would flow over the surface smoothly. I so appreciate your informative videos! TFS

    This was very helpful. I try watercolor with pencils and paints and always struggle. But watching this, I think I might be happier with my results if I use hot press paper, so will give it a try!

    Thanks for doing this comparison, Sandy. I was going to use my watercolour pencils this weekend so very helpful. I do like the cold press over the hot press which was a surprise... more contrast is more interesting to me. ❤️🇨🇦

    Interesting! I don’t have watercolor pencils, but I’m going to give my Inktense pencils another try on Arches rough and cold press. We haven’t gotten along, but maybe it was the paper. I haven’t bought any of the hot press, but it might be nice for very detailed stamps.

    Awesome video, Sandy! I would never have considered using a cold press or, heaven forbid, rough paper with watercolour pencils but this wonderful example has shown me the advantages of doing so. Who knew? The cards are just precious ❤️

    This was so super helpful. I usually use hot press when stamping as you have mentioned and then cold when just doing general watercolour, but I can see clearly the benefit of using my cold press for watercolouring in my stamped images now.

    Great comparison. I even like to just draw without any water with my watercolor pencils. And I really like how they layer. I think hot pressed paper would be great for layering the colors. 😁

    I like how the hot press looks the best but the cold press is nice for more contrast if you're going for that.

    That is such a sweet image oh, and I love that the artist's signature is part of the stamp! When you first did the swatches and I saw the rough, I said the same thing that it was like granulating watercolors and I am one that loves the granulation! Okay I'm a little weird but you said you were a little weird too, when you held the image up close, on the baby bunny to the left of Dad oh, it looked like she drew in bunny arm hair/hare?? LOL. Of course I know those were just shadowmarks but it still was funny

    Have to have lights to show darks. Bob was always right about that. The hot press looks flat, while the colors are lighter. I love the depth of the other. Wasn’t the hot designed for drawing initially?

      It works well with pen and ink and a watercolor wash.

    Great Vid, you mentioned you think of the Abrecht Durer as Mid Range watercolour pencil, what do you consider to be the best (High Range) brand in watercolour pencils in your opinion then? I feel as though I may has missed something =o) (Just curious cuz I consider them the best) partly due to the colour support system throughout the Faber range and quality of pigment (I own the poly's and the pitts)

    Thought I was doing something wrong because every time I try the hot press paper I am disappointed. Thanks for the side-by-side comparison. I will save hot press paper for WC powders.

    Sandy, what paintbrush are you using? I've heard that slightly stiffer brushes (synthetic or nylon) work better with watercolor pencils because the color needs to be pushed more and needs less water than regular watercolors. Do you find that to be the case? Would love to hear your thoughts on this last piece of the "tool" puzzle when working with wc pencils.....pencils, paper, brush.... Thank you!

  • @ladyflimflam

    It looks to me paper choice would be influenced by the look you’re going for. The hot press presents a flat illustration look while the textured papers do present a more watercolored illustration look.

  • @Carol-Bell
    @Carol-Bell 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you for this comparison. I have always preferred the smoothness of hot press paper, but this showed me the advantages that texture gives. Also- I have and love the Alfred Durer pencils. You called them “mid-range” quality and compared them to Caran d’Ache- so I’m very curious what pencils would be “high” quality. I don’t mean this as critique or challenge, I would really like to know, because perhaps there are watercolor pencils I never heard of or haven’t tried yet. I don’t think I have tried the Caran d’ Ache (did I hear it right, “soft color”?) yet, and I’m curious- that brand tends to be expensive, but is always very good. My favorite medium is watercolor, and I include watercolor pencils in that.

    • @SandyAllnock1
      @SandyAllnock1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Supracolor are the Caran d’ache midrange, and the Museum Aquarelle are the expensive ones.

    I do find with a bit softer 100% cotton like a rubens the lines are a bit harder to water down ( same brand pencils) a bit tougher paper with wc pencils works better for me. Rubens is rather smooth; but Im kindof heavy handed with my materials so I know part of that is my own doing, still I do keep the difference in mind. I guess it's the same with colored pencils. Paper needs the tooth to grab pigment but push to hard and you dent it. Consequence; I use the tip of my pencil like I would a pen,lol
