WOW, straight to the point, no irrelevant material, no stupid jokes, and nothing for sale. Now THIS is the kind of You Tube video I like, great job. It would normally take me several hours to wade through the BS on other channels just to find this simple bit of information.

I'm glad I found this video. I have a pine cabinet that I've been oiling for years and wanted to start with wax so I could get a bit of shine on it. But the guy in the hardware store told me that I can't use wax if I've already used oil. Somehow I thought he didn't really know but didn't want to admit it. So finally I looked around YT. Aha! I haven't used the wax yet because I now know that I can't go back to oil and I do like the oil's natural staining effect. But it sure is good to know what's possible.

Absolutely excellent video. No talking crap for 10 mins about things we just don’t want or need to hear. You got straight into the video and not only that I found this video very very informative and you covered EVERYTHING!! Thank you for a great video. My son in law has built a bar in his back garden and for the bar top he’s used a scaffold board and it’s rough and dirty. He would like to seal it with something but doesn’t want the colour to change massively. What would you recommend using? And should be sand first as it’s really really rough to the touch.

I might need to watch this video two or three more times to help it soak in. I love the way you give your professional and personal opinion based on experience versus a scientific approach. From everything I have learned so far about this subject, you have absolutely nailed it. For me, this will tend to be my go to source of good information. It will help me clarify what direction I will go on any particular wood project in the future ... at least until I understand the subject as well as you do ... which will probably be never.

This is very educational, thank you for the interesting videos. I was in the process of staining my staircase, after ripping off the dingy carpeting that was on it. I didn't really know what I was doing, but I did know what I wanted. Thank goodness I came across your videos. They are so easy to follow and I learned exactly what I needed to complete my staircase to look professional instead of what probably would have looked like a half finished attempt at my desired goal. I look forward to more such videos as my next project is to paint my stained kitchen cupboards white.

I was going to point this out but now I shan't bother.
I'm a big fan of shellac. I recently spent about 50 hours sanding down my pitch pine newel posts and banisters. It was a giant pain in the arse but it was worth it once I put the shellac on. The pitch pine had a beautiful strong grain pattern and as soon as I started to paint the shellac on it looked absolutely gorgeous.
I know it won't last as long as polyurethane varnish but my house is Victorian and I just didn't think it would look in keeping.

Well, that was great, I have spent two weeks and lots of experiments to get to this, full of info video.
Much finished wood comes with acrylic, which is neither really good nor really bad. I will be rubbing it off my beech workbench [axminster kit] with sandpaper and going for a better finsh to get the grain to pop.
I have used polyurthane mixed 5050 with white spirit to create a finishing coating which will soak in on my hardwood windowsills.
The coating of polyurthane that was used a few years ago on windowsills [bare hardwood] formed a horrid plastic surface which was affected by sunshine, and is hard to remove.
I have four beech worktops to prepare this week before installing, cost and time is a consideration, so underneath and raw edges I will use the 50 : 50 spirit : urethane as a protection against any dampness, and either use the same on top with Liberom finishing oil to finish, or just use the finishing oil alone. The finishing oil tends to go on quite thick, and takes a while to dry, so I am tempted to try adding 1 part spirit to 2 parts oil, for the initial coat, I will experiment, My own dining area/workspace is the same beech worktop , but is not in thesame area, so I might try shellac to finish.

    Thanks for the quick overview!
On kitchen cutting boards, I ran out of mineral oil but the wood was getting dry. I used Olive Oil (because it was the only edible oil I had on hand since we were sailing across the Atlantic for a few weeks) and it worked beautifully. I kept applying olive oil to it over the next year and so far no bad effects. Now olive oil is my go to for cooking surfaces :)

Interesting. I've noticed from watching TH-cam videos that, down in the South Pacific and Asia region, lacquers and varnishes seem particularly popular. I was puzzled by this until it suddenly dawned on me; HUMIDITY. They get so much moisture down there, especially in monsoon season, that I guess it pays to use more lacquers and PU (polyurethane) than we do up here. They use GALLONS of it,,,,actually oil drums filled with it, like it's going out of style. Melamine too, in liquid form. On one Hindu video the guy was mixing the stuff with his bare hands and then washed it off afterward with mineral spirits, again scrubbing with his bare hands---crazy!
