      +Ann Sutherland sorry, I didn’t want to get so detail oriented that it was hard to digest. But I guess I just didn’t put enough detail in. I will work more on trying to develop a better balance of the two. Thanks for your input!! 😁

    Hi again, great video! With our ever-bearing raspberries we get fruit on new wood in late summer and again in the early summer of next year. The stakes then simply dry up and can be removed any time. We're based in Ireland, a maritime climate. Hope this helps! :D

    Hi, tks for your informative videos. Do you think there is a species of raspberries that would grow in sub-tropical zone 9 Louisiana. My newest Gran loves these berries and I'd like to setup a patch in my garden just for her picking. Tks for your response. I appreciate.

    So I have Willamette raspberries (summer) that I planted in the spring. The raspberry has exploded in growth and all the branches are about the same length and maybe just around 4 feet. I don't know when I should prune for lateral growth. Should I leave them be? I'm afraid they wont have time to form that lateral growth by the time they are long enough to prune. Thanks!

    Thought I seen in another vid you left cut raspberry canes on ground. Best to get them off the property all together to avoid diseases, which black raspberries are more prone to getting. Nice place, what's that in size, about a 1/3 acre food forest?

    hey bud thanx for great video. I have Willamette Raspberries and I live in Jacksonville FL. I was away from home for a month and just got back and noticed my raspberries are about 10' long on trellises. I've only planted them in March this year. Should I prune the tops off ?? can anyone help ? or should I leave them to grow more ? I also have more new growth on bottom of plant. Thank You

    I really need help with my everbearings. I live on the west coast and have everbearings. They produce fruit about mid July no matter how I thin which is good - but the fall crop always rots on the canes since it is too wet and shaded (sun too low) by late August on. Can you advise the proper way to prune for a more bountiful spring harvest? thanks for your help!

    Just moved in my place (2 acres) and only just learning. Watching tons of videos and planning. I do have berries, all over. Summer Raspberries, fall Raspberries, and blackberries. (I wonder if I remember which is which.) Its January now. Is there anything I can do for them this coming year or is it too late. As for the planning the rest of a garden I have a very small budget. I think I am going spend the summer building compost and building up my soil. I have nice border trees but wild undergrowth. I love wild things but would love to put in functional hedges. Then I want to knock the weed layer down to the ground and compost and mulch for a good year. That way I can save up for some fruit trees and all the veggie seed I want to grow. Looking into leads for free woodchips, and I really want organic hay that I can let sit for a season so sprout and rot a bit. Anyway, I love your channel and have watched lots of the videos and learning so much. Getting confident!

    So i was pruning some raspberries today before seeing this video. I chopped up the dead dry canes like woodchips and spread them around the base again chop n drop style. Can that promote disease or should it be ok?

    • @jamesprigioni
      @jamesprigioni  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Blind John no, that will be great mulch. I have done this before also, I show it in one of my videos an area where the chickens scratched up. Compared to an area that I layer mulch down. Wood chips then cut raspberries canes on top of it. The soil beneath the mulch and cut canes was wet, full of worms, and beautiful soil structure. Not to mention the raspberries it was under green great 😁

    • @jamesprigioni
      @jamesprigioni  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Blind John leaving the finished canes of summer bearing and black and purple raspberries up rotting without cutting them off the raspberry plant is what will can promote some disease

    How long it take to spring new leaves after winter??

  • @ouselfishnumber
    @ouselfishnumber 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a raspberry plant I got this past spring that was bare root. I put it in a container and let it go, it wound up running about 15-20 feet across the yard and now sort of up my wall. Would I prune this similar to the black raspberries? The name escapes me but when I let the berries go they did go dark/black. Thank you for the video!

    • @ouselfishnumber
      @ouselfishnumber 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe I answered my own question after I hit post. All the shoots/vines are coming from the bare root stock/buds not from a rhizosphere and multiple canes coming from the ground. Thanks again for the video.

      +Robin Knight yeah you need to prune. Yeah you can prune as as late as you want. Just prune before the new buds start opening in the spring. 😁

    I never prune berries without gloves. I can't stand the thorns! I usually prune in early spring. Do you recommend doing it in late fall instead?

  • @KMalcolmful
    @KMalcolmful 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for this. We got raspberry transplants from a neighbor in late summer. They are fall bearing. Do we prune them down completely? I'm such a novice I'm afraid that I'll destroy them!😊

    • @jamesprigioni
      @jamesprigioni  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Karen Malcolm your welcome. Yup, for fall bearing you prune them all the way down to the ground level. You don’t want to leave a stub or it’s buds may grow shoots and they will be weak.
      That’s ok, even if you did it wrong they will still grow back again next year 😁

      I hear you there - especially when they get tall, or long.

    • @jamesprigioni
      @jamesprigioni  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly, thats why I prune the summer bearing, and black and purples at the shorter height and encourage the side branching. Easier for me to deal with, especially in the scenario of my blackberries. Knowing that the fruit is produced on the second year canes for these two, then that the fall raspberries fruit on the first year, and that they should be cut to the ground (in my opinion), really is the main focus I think.
      What do you do with your ever bearing and/or fall raspberries?

    • @lockwoan01
      @lockwoan01 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, last year, with my ever-bearers (Fall Gold, Polona, and Heritage), I decided to cut the part that had fruited to try to get a second crop on the lower part in the late spring/early summer - didn't really get a good crop, so I think I'll just cut it to the grown and just have a fall crop with those (along with my other ever bearers).
