Harley Benton SC450 Plus vs PRS McCarty - In the studio - Part 3 - Cheap Guitar vs Expensive Guitar

  • I play the Harley Benton in my small studio in a produced rock track, then I play the same track with the exact same setting on my PRS McCarty.
    The playability of the Harley Benton is excellent. Is it as well made as the PRS, or made from the finest components and timber? No, but to me it sure as hell plays well and is great value for money!
    All guitar tones are produced by Guitar Rig 5 using the JCM800 amp model.
    Drums - Superior Drummer 2.0
    Bass - Squier Classic Vibe Jazz Bass
    What do you think? The Harley Benton costs over 10x less than the PRS, do you think it has 10x less tone?

    I'm going to buy exactly this harley benton (I hope as soon as possible) and the next summer I'll get a real set-up with a valve amp, pedals and an expensive guitar.

    Great video and comparison, and great song and playing! Now, regarding the final question: does the PRS sound 10x better? I believe it´s not regarding sound (both sounded great), but perhaps longevity -mind you: this is a guy who has´t ever owned an expensive guitar-, but according to what I´ve read, a more expensive guitar is perhaps better built, have better hardware, and maybe there´s the difference. Nevertheless, I don´t justify paying a little fortune for a guitar (meaning: I´ll take the Benton). Again, great video, I enjoyed it.

      Cheers and thanks for taking the time to give your opinion. The HB will stand the test of time I think, it may need pot and switch changes sooner, but it's built very well.

    PRS is AMAZING, HB is quite good for the coin, needs better pups though. Thanks 4 posting.

      Lol @ that , pickups are fine , the guys tone is in his fingers , you can't buy talent . The propaganda amongst guitar brands gets people like you saying things like that .

    • @ryant3600
      @ryant3600 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Dad-Gad there is a lot of tone in fingers but the quality and clarity is all about the pups. You play through cheapy pups and then play the exact same thing through say a set of seymours.. huge difference in quality and clarity of sound

    If you liked the McCarty better most likely it would be simply because it uses P-90's. Otherwise both very nice!!

    If talking tones only, yeah not worth the price. However, that PRS is probably buit 10x better overall. I have never owned a PRS, but their quality is said to be exceptional 🧐🤔😬

    I think the McCarty is "sweeter", but I suspect that's more a characteristic of the pickup types - I don't think it's better or worse, just what you prefer. I suspect the HBs with P90s would sound pretty similar, so I doubt the PRS guitars are worth 10X more.

    Sadly, that lovely PRS does not have a great resale value. So, unless you’re a brand person, the Harley Bentons make a lot of sense. Phil McKnight of Know Your Gear was very impressed with the HB tele he played at Guitcon, and said he didn’t tryout the HB PRS style guitars because he didn’t want to know [how close they sound to the real deal.] It’s nice there’s a reasonable alternative to the lovely expensive instruments out there. Of course, there’s a big difference in quality of materials and workmanship, but the playing experience seems to be similar and a lot less damaging to your pocket. You can drive a cheap used car or an expensive brand new one, but both will get you to your destination.

    the SC450+ isn't reaching its true potential with those pups. it deserves better.

    P90 isn't going to be as thick as a humbucker. What pickups were in Benton? Couldn't make our logo.

      @g.a.s.2279  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is true, although the P90's in the McCarty are loud!!! It's probably the loudest guitar I own when I compare on a clean channel. It was the closest to a les paul that I own so it was the only one I could make a comparison to. The HB pickups are Wilkinson.

    Also try the Harley Benton True Tone amp-sim pedals and you'll never use Guitar Rig again.

      @g.a.s.2279  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a bold claim!! I'll do some research, thanks for the heads up. Do you think that £ for £ you'll get as good value out buying the pedals as you do from Guitar Rig? I'm in the process of trying Postive Grid's BIAS at the moment, that's pretty good too.

      Personally I've stopped using digital amp sims like Guitar Rig, since I've discovered the Harley Benton/Joyo pedals. They are all analog and you can plug them right into your interface or mixing console with no real amps needed. Try the 'American Sound' and the 'British Sound' pedals. I've used them on many of my recordings and nobody ever noticed it's just a pedal.

      Yes! I have both the joyo vintage American and the joyo ac10. Two sounds for less than the price of one amp!

    The onley difference is the durabillity of the instrument, ... and in this day and age it's a common thing to have stuff for just a periode off time, ... b.t.w., ... ya can't take it into ya're grave, now can ya?, ..... But personely? i like the Harley Benton, ... just a wee more of an edge to the sound, ... and i'll bet even in "Jazz Mode", ... Some nice licks, tasty even. Thnx4Upld

      PRS has totally different kind of pup. HB vs. P90. Hard to compare. But anyway, I have lot of guitars. Some Gibsons, Fender and Duesenberg, and some Harley Benton. I treat them the same. HB are guitars worth much much more than they cost.
