I've never understood the logic of girls giving their numbers to guys. Because then the guy can pester her continuously. If a guy gives her a calling card with his number, she can call if she wants or just ignore him. That way, she's safe.
Visited Glasgow in 1998. My friend and I would ask people at the bar if they knew a good bar for a certain type of music. Good convo starter. The Clash was our favorite. People would sometimes have good recs, but if not, it was always good for a bit of chat.
Some good advice here, although seems more universal than specific to Scotland. Some observations from a guys perspective: Like the idea of giving your number rather than asking for one. Also agree with being mindful of the environment and situation when approaching. Wouldn't stress to much on "Are they out of my league". You don't know them or what they find attractive in a person. A lot of good looking girls I have know complain that most guys are to afraid to ask them out, so just giving it a shot might work out. I've found creepy depends more on the perspective of the person being approached. If they find you attractive it's cute, if they don't then it's creepy. Obviously they are lines that would be creepy no matter what, but in general they will either be receptive or not.
As frustrating as it is about the lockdown, I would happily trade places with you. Instead of here where people are walking around with no mask. It will be over soon. ☺️

I have to share my story of a guy starting a conversation/hitting on me. I am a Finnish woman, 44yo at the moment. This happened when I was about 19, I think I was in the upper secondary school aka high school. I was walking our dog out with my boyfriend at the time and we lived in the country here. So very little village, just about 200 people in the nearby. Nobody in sigh, just us. A car stopped by and a young guy popped his head out and said hello. We get very good schooling here so English is nothing scary to come by, so I told my boyfriend to go on with the dog and I will catch them after helping this tourist. Wich he very much was. He asked where the nearest priest is and of course I started to give him directions to there, because I am helpful. :) The guy looked a bit baffled but thanked me and turned the car around and I jogged to the bf and our dog. Years later I finally got it. He was trying to make a joke and he hit on me... And I gave him directions as a good Finn. Sometimes you just have to be blunt. Say what you mean and don’t skip around :)
Being prepared to just volunter _my_ number instead of asking for _hers_ is something I would not have considered, but it's an interesting idea. Personally, I use my voicemail for call screening, but I think any woman (especially nowadays) is going to understand that.
