    Have to say, you gave the best explanation of a 5 Guys ever! "Small" fries are enough to feed two people. I always get a Jr. Fries when I go simply because it's enough for me and my pug. Great breakdown of places to eat around your neck of the woods!

    I really appreciate this particular video. You have the qualities of a good food critic. This is because you don't explain just that you like a restaurant, you explain WHY you like a restaurant with details. I don't care if I agree or disagree with you, as long as I understand why you like or dislike something. THEN you are allowing me to make up my own mind about a place overall, because I have some detailed information, and I know what I care about and how that compares to what you care about.

    As a Canadian, my ears perked up when you said "snowboarding".
    I laughed when you said "Pret a Manger" as it is not pronounced that way in French and laughed again to find they are only available in the UK, the USA and Honk Kong but not in France nor Quebec.
    Pret a Manger = Ready to eat; Pret a Porter = Ready to wear; Pret a Portage = Ready to pick up the canoe.

    • @tbelding
      @tbelding 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suspect it's like Alimentation Couche-Tard, but backwards. To really make it in France or Quebec, you have to start off as a French/Quebec company -usually with a name that can't be directly translated to English. There's a reason why they just bought up local companies, like Circle K. I'm about the only one in Texas that can pronounce the name, and even their district management mangles the meaning. So, using a French name will mean that you get the attention of English speakers, but the French won't want anything to do with it :) (I really liked the 'pick up the canoe', btw. Mon canard est en feu, personally.)

    I've only been to Edinburgh, and only for one day... but I've spent a total of a couple weeks in London, and have eaten at Pret (agree, "Meh"), Greggs (for me it was a "Worth a try"... REALLY budget friendly! ) and Nando's (Agree with "Love it".). Your description of Oink makes me want to book a trip there TODAY! Nothing like right off the spit roasted pork! And one day, before I die (of heart disease?), I want to visit an honest to goodness "Chippie". I live on the west coast, in a fishing town, and it's damn difficult to get Fish and Chips that don't come out of a bag from a big restaurant vendor... bleh! I wish someone would open a "Chippie" in Eureka, California!

    Okay you MUST try Texas brisket if you haven't. Having listened carefully to the song of your palate, I think you would die and go to heaven 1,000 times over if you were to taste its music. Perhaps (likely) there is something on that side of the pond that is similar. Can't tell if you like sweet flavors or not, but, I usually don't crave my sweets with savories, so, I take it generally without bbq sauce unless it's super German-style and decidedly not sweet. The meat has too much succulence to smother with sugars. Brisket. I'll teach you how to do it. Or TH-cam can, too. Sooo good.

    Mosco - Question. I'm from the States. I've heard that in Ireland there are certain food standards that McD's has to meet, or get out of town. Primarily, I'm referring to Chicken McNuggets and some Chicken patties, which over here are made with 'pink slim' and altho the favorite of children from coast to coast, are quite abysmal and rubbery things.
    So, is the requirement that Chicken McNuggets, etc., be made from 'real, whole' pieces of chicken, as apposed to all ground up, a thing in Scotland? How about the rest of the UK or the EU even? Just curious. Also, I'm curious as to what the price might be? Does the higher grade meat result in higher prices, my final question.
    Side note, even McD's and Burger King have been putting out a true chicken breast burger, as KFC long has, but so far, I've not heard too many accolades about either, and there is a price boost from most burgers as well. Then again, I haven't eaten at a fast food place since this whole panny'd lockdown started, so I've never had either.
    The two such burgers that seem to keep people (literally, physically) fighting for over here, as to which is better (or even to just get their hands on one), are Chick-Fil-A and Popeyes, which I don't think you have over there. I've never had either, but it seems funny to me that people will actually 'have words', if not come to blows about such a thing, in Country that is not exactly known for 'starvation'. I'm not saying people don't go hungry, but it's a bit more difficult than in Biafra, let's say.
    Starvation, not so much, but starving for nutrition, even rich people do that here.
    Apparently, both are quite good, but Chick-Fil-A comes with a healthy helping of anti-gay rights (and others), as basically, from a Southern and conservative religious background. For example, they are not open on Sundays, (Holy 'blue laws' Batman), where as Popeyes is, and has a far greater all-inclusive reputation, black, white, gay, straight or whatever.

    • @donovanfoto3263
      @donovanfoto3263 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I agree. The question of food quality is an EU issue. The 'pink slime' is real and disgusting. As to Popeye or Chick Fil A, I have never eaten at Popeye's, but refuse Chick Fil A because of the HUMAN RIGHTS/CIVIL RIGHTS issue. I don't care who they sleep with as long as everybody is an adult and its consensual. Pedophiles are a different issue. Race bigotry is also HUGE at Chick Fil A. I just can't support that mentality.

    McD's Big Mac is still my fave burger from there but for all others BK has them beat. Now, do yourself a favor when you go to subway next time. Ask them to please toast the roll lightly first then put on the black forest ham topped with provolone then toast again and add some tomato, spinach leaves and the sweet onion teriyaki sauce. I like the whole wheat because the initial toast enhances the taste of the roll

    Really interesting to see people's opinions on fast food places we have in the US vs in Scotland. Fascinating that Domino's is expensive over there. It's dirt cheap in New York, even though most New Yorkers would rather spend extra at their local pizza place. Most of the really popular spots (McDonald's, Burget King etc.) vary in quality regionally. Burger King is garbage on the East Coast but they're better in the Mid West. It's a crap shoot sometimes if you're traveling. I would KILL for a good Fish and Chips spot over here.

  • @rhark25

    Burger King's meat is cooked over an open fire in the US so I assume it's that way in the UK as well. That's why their burger flavor is so good IMHO

    Very fun video! I agree with most of those, however I would have put the chippy higher up (Of course as you said there are good ones and bad ones so its understandable haha). Now I will say that I feel here in the US dominos is better than pizza hut both in price and quality but its the opposite in Scotland. Dominos was very meh and over priced there but pizza hut was still a full-blown restaurant in Edinburgh (not just pizza/pasta/wings) and where I'm at (Idaho) they are all express locations now. I always found it better to hit up pizza express or one of the chippy shops in the town I was living in. For those asking about tacobell I think they recently built one in Glasgow but it opened after I had moved back to the US so no comparison to offer sorry...

      I don't know if it's a national trend, but, Dominoes used to be the bottom of the barrel quality wise where I live... but, in the last 10 years or so, has improved DRAMATICALLY n quality. It's not "the best" pizza, but it's solidly in the middle of the pack now. Most of my Dominoes memories were of being with buddies, all of us broke, and getting a crappy pizza we could afford.... now it's a "eh, it's all right" pizza I can afford.

    Sadly some of the places like Pizza Express and Prezzo are no longer where I am in the UK, but I would prefer going to Milton Keynes or Watford and try some of the lovely Buffet foods.
    Sadly I'm not keen on Greggs as I found most of it a bit dry and tasteless. Usually I prefer going to Wetherspoons, Wenzls and McDonald's to eat around me. Although it's hard to resist Nandos! Hehe

    They have Five Guys in Scotland? Whenever I feel like paying five times more for a really average hamburger than I should, I go to Five Guys. Burger King lost my business when they adopted the creepy caricature King thing as a mascot. Now, here in the US we have Slater's 50/50; that's an awesome burger that's worth the expense. The Habit is right up there too.

    You aren't alone in your feelings about Burger King. BK is far and away better than McDonald's in just about every way imaginable. I am interested in your choices. Nachos were invented in Lukeville, Texas BTW, NOT Mexican. Pizza Slut is terrible, I used to manager one. I just can't imagine GREAT Japanese food outside of Japan. I have had GOOD Japanese food but the REALLY GREAT stuff doesn't leave Japan. Many of your choices, I have never heard of, so I can't say honestly. It is interesting to hear your opinions. If I find any of these in Ireland, I will have to try them. The Mexican food is something I will never try, having lived in Mexico and had a Mexican wife. Mexican food is sacred. It can't compare anywhere else.
    Oh, great FGI Friday story. I took my youngest daughter and her friend to Fridays for her birthday. After eating, I excused my self, went and paid the bill, then left and went across the street. I called my daughter and said "Dine and Dash", meaning leave without paying. She and her friend sat there, afraid to leave, till the waiter told them it was paid for. I would never actually Dine and Dash and the waiter did get a nice tip as well.

    KFC is my favorite for chicken any thing when I was pregnant with both of my almost 26 and almost 23 year old daughters I couldn't eat fried food it made me sick as fuck so I went to BK because they are flam broiled. That means that the patties are put on a grill that moves like a conveyer belt, it's cool to watch as I said before I have worked there

    No Taco Bell there or do you avoid it? That's a pretty common cheap eat in the US and owned by Yum Brands like KFC I'd think you have them? Very curious.
    Liked your video but I see you Brits use the same a for Tapas that you do for pasta and taco. I don't know of any tapas chains in the US but they are popular in the larger cities, small plates or appetizers and very Spanish.

      @@bmbrth1 Same. Domino's used to be the worst of the big chains, but they got their acts together a few years back and started making decent pizza at a good price. Love their tomato-bacon chicken.

    As an American, I apologies for the fast food crap we've dumped on yous. Though I suspect McD, BK, Dominos, etc...probably taste a bit better over there, I still don't think highly of them. I avoid them here. We tried 5 Guys here.....not all that great. I did like Wagamama though.
