Borja here, I had the pleasure to play Folger both round 3 and in the shadow round. Gotta say, truly lovely guy. It saddens me a bit that some people are saying he only won because of luck. He played masterfully, which is what made it possible for him to take advantage of that point of luck you need to win; if he hadn't played correctly, then he wouldn't have been able to make use of that luck. I feel like a lot of people forget or oversee that :)
In the recent Art of War interview Folger talked about how he essentially “blanks a phase” when popping the Wardens’ FNP on top of the 2+ save and 4+ invo. That’s what happened with the Astra shooting in Turn 2. But it’s somewhat swingy. Some bad rolls and it’s game over. Now it worked and then it was pretty much over for Astra instead.
Great summary and insights! I believe most players prepared extensively into Astra Militarum but not so much into Custodes Talons of the Emperor. 😊 I only watched sporadicly. Sometimes getting thrown off by GW not having a continuous stream of the 40K games (how is that even possible on their premium competitive event?).
Yeah GW's coverage wasn't great tbh no other english streamers, no continuous coverage of even a single system, no player mics or dice box on their main stream (at least in the beginning) I'm surprised they didn't push 40k to Twitch and AOS to YT or something similar, rather than breaking them up. They even had seperate commentators for each game
Folger Pyles, eh? If I'm not mistaken he was the runner up at LVO, playing Aeldari when they were very powerful. Lost against Matt Lorah's Monolith. Nice to see him playing something else that isn't considered broken currently. Respect!
@naj0137 At this tournament, you could separately get up to 7 points for painting, am Lenon got 2 and Kustodia got 3, as a result, they went 31 and 30 points apart in the overall table.
I am not understanding how the guards unit with Draxus is able to reach 44 attacks. With the setup here I only would reach 32. Could someone explain please?
I doubt any other player with Folger's list could duplicate his success. But watch if GW doesn't give current Custodes a nerf based off Folger's victory. Because that's what knee jerk reactionary GW does.
Eh. I wouldn’t mind if we got the Wardens and BC nerfed a little, as long as other units are buffed up to be way more playable. Allarus, Vertus and most other HQs need a lot of help to see play
Custodes are hard to kill. Devastating Wounds are one of the few efficient ways to kill them. So he used Talons of The Emperor to give his pricey Custodes Mortal Wound protection. Looks to me to be a smart evolution of the list. You have to clear all thr Anathema units to have any luck with your Devastating Wounds.
The detatchment rule is a bit shit and worse at protecting from mortals than the shield host strat that’s used when mortals are assigned Yes in theory you get protection to more things but it really doesn’t come up that often
Opponents must take Custodes "spike" rolls it into account. In the finale a Hydra could have appeared on turn 2 (more dice rolled equals higher chance of reaching the bell curve), or aquilons could have blocked one unit of wardens.
AM is strong but I believe it’s also a matter of strong players choosing strong armies, making the strong armies go even stronger. The addition of Aquilons were not needed for Astra right now. It will all be adjusted in the next slate though.
@ true she does though I view her more as the psychic is just extra but not the main meal, just a side dish It’s also worth noting that you probably want a couple of targets to shoot at that turn as it’s very easy to overkill a unit
no. Iron storm ultra marines are common. Ultramarines are just the undisputed best way to play any codex detachment if you aren't going to play with subfaction units. You just end up with tons of characters to play with which give you an amazing number of tools. Why would anyone play iron hands ironstorm or salamanders flamestorm when you have calgar handing out +1 Command points a turn and ventrus letting you deepstrike a unit for free and guilliman giving out second oath targets and so on.
Ultramarines got big points breaks on their characters and new abilities on Uriel Ventris back in October, so are seeing a resurgence in play. Folger even had to beat them in the semifinals to progress.
I agree tbh; you'd think they'd put some pro painted stuff and textured footprints on their main stream table rather just neoprene and spray paint. 🤷♂ Coverage has never been GW's strongsuit tho
Congrats to the custodes player, but in reality the AM player allowed him to win, with making couple of very huge mistakes. I`m sure that if he were more fresh, he never was going to allow the be diced out.
wtf are you even on about? Thats how people win competitive games/sports. One player/team makes more mistakes than the other. Using that reason to discredit the custodes player's final round doesn't work.
Every time I see a player flexing these cool toolbox plays with Custodes I wish I could do the same with Space Marines. ...but then I look at how much money and hobby investment I made in to my army and I circle back to "Skill Issue" and stop myself from buying 2000 pts of Custodes
If you can find someone with a 3d resin printer who lives near you through like facebook or discord or something, you could probably commission 2k of custodes infantry for like 100$ or less tbh. I've met guys who would sell me 2k of custodes for 80$ before. Custodes are nice cause infantry is cheap and easy to print + they're so elite you don't need that many models for 2k
@@vidarthorsby2052 They just lack the durability on data sheets (outside DW knights) and ability to do it allwithout committing all your resources at once.. but also skill issue
Just roll 4s is how they won. If any other army charges turn 1 to kill cheap transports those units dont survive the next shooting phase. Congrats to Folger on rolling more 4s than his opponents.
Just roll 4s for 9 games in a row? There's so much more skill expression in both the army and the player than "jUsT roLL 4S LmAo", bet if you had the exact same list you could not win 9 games in a row like Folger did. Keep coping
@TaylorX-g4b I bet any decent player with a few practice games could take that list to a top 3 at a GT with his luck. He literally won a game because he drew containment turn 5. He won the finals because custodes did what they do; tank a gun line then kill the big threats so there's nothing left to deal with them after the fnp turn. I don't consider an army that can tank an entire gun line of shooting and only lose 6 models requiring an expression of skill. Simp harder.
I root for Taylor. That said, Swordsman, you sound angry and bitter. Maybe there is something in your life that makes you take your negative emotions out on the success of folger and the happy people cheering him up. If you really wanna be like, that‘s fine. The consequence however will always be the same: you escalating conflicts, in TH-cam comments or real life. Only TH-cam comments don’t punch back. So be save, I hope every will turn out positively for you. All the best.

That he named the army Mid AF but at Worlds made me happy to know that he won
I'm very happy the golden boys won the gold medal! It was an awesome game. I thought John had it when he was shooting his entire army into the wardens

Who would've thought custodes were capable of being the top dog.
That pilot must have played with the emperor himself at the top of his mind
he scored one point more than his closest rival and that was due to a paint job

Great breakdown, super excited to get some Custodes on the board
Thoroughly enjoy Folger. And Thoroughly enjoy Trey Tortoise reviews. Great work, players 👏

TLDR. Took the RoW to give his stuff protection from mortals and just like every other Custodes list, stands in the middle and rolls 4++.

"If you can spike your saves". Seems to be his key to succsess. Good on him though
