lol Hail! I've had one sitting in yard Just for 'that' purpose ... Water 'Overflow', haha, into Creek. ... [to pooling area] Deep water hold back up to Toilet. {{{sigh}}} But, have yet to try. Planned to wrap Toilet in Chicken Wire covered with ?? Cement[?] adding 'Pockets', to use as 'pots', for Bromeliads, etc. along the sides. Quite welcome to use idea, Let me know if you made one. I have made a bog filter of concrete using these exact methods like void spaces, gravel, plants etc and my water is crystal clear. In fact crystal clear seems to be an understatement!A slow water flow makes a huge difference, that is the trick
That’s awesome!! Bog filters are definitely my favourite kind of pond filter, and it’s great how they only require a slow flow.. it’s means a smaller more energy efficient pump can be used! I think bog filters in general are really cost effective!! Thanks for watching!! 😊

Great looking build! I worry a bit about finishing the wood components. You mentioned staining the wood, but a varnish or deck sealer would probably go a long way to preventing swelling or damage to the wood, as well as keeping anything nasty from the wood itself from dripping down into the pond, particularly if you used treated deck boards. I'd do the same for the OSB portion of the base, as rain water will get in between the other layers and cause swelling and disintegration of the OSB over time.

Great video and excellent descriptions. I'm curious about adding a T connector in the "cleanout" line so that could double as the input from the pump since it already goes to the bottom of the filter. Thoughts?

Q: How do you stop the Pond section from overflowing when it rains 🌧 ?
Thank you! To be honest I haven’t done anything to stop it from overflowing… If I see it looking too high I just use a jug and remove a bit of water. I’ve seen people with a similar setup drill a small hole near the top of the pot where they want the water level.. unfortunately because the top surround on this pot is hollow, it wouldn’t of work in this situation. 😊

Hi Adrian, thanks very much! Yeah, I run an extension cord to a specifically designed weatherproof electric box. If your in the UK, you can get them from Homebase. It works quite well, but it’s not perfect. I tend to place a bin bag over the top of it as a bit of extra waterproofing! 👍😊

I have a similar pond. I bought a solar "airstone" pump and connected a sponge filter. For plants ive got a few baskets with angel plants and ornamental onion, and hyacinth and water lettuce floating.

Great vid! I’m going to do this when I move into my house, currently in a flat. Can the pump tube go straight into the bottom of the filter pot rather than it going in from the top to just reach the bottom anyway? Would make it look a lot nicer than a tube sticking out the top lol
Thank you! Yeah, you can go straight into the bottom. The only thing with that is that it does add a possible leak point, also some people add a breather pipe in at the top (where the water comes in), to stop back flow. But if your not using a breather pipe and your using a non return valve like I used here, you can for sure go in at the bottom, and it would look a lot cleaner.
Love the video man! I'm making my own at the moment. Any tips for using the holesaw on the pot? I tried it earlier and it split the the plastic.

this inspired me to do my own i have created a pond with 55 gallon food barrel. I used 2 5 gallon buckets one on each side. it has been going good but my question is how much water should i expect the plants to use. I seem to loosing about 6 to 7 inches a week. i cant find a leak any where. do you plants take much water from the pond
That seems like quite a lot of water to be loosing each week. Is it particularly hot where you are? Could be evaporation? Also, could wind be catching the water as it returns back to the pond, and blowing it out? That can sometimes happen if there is a big drop from the bog back into the pond. 👍

Right so firstly for those debating recreating this...
I've created my own pond based on this and mirrored it as closely as possible. I've pictures to prove it and its outside as I type. Fish and all. I've made some observations.
COST. This is NO budget pond. You could build quite a half decent ground pond for the cost of this. I've seen a comment or two that this planter cost him £45. Im sure 'today' that this is NOT possible. Im UK. Ive found this exact planter in numerous gsrden centres. It ranges from £350 to £500. The smaller planter anywhere up to £100. Planters are a rip off these days. I got a similar planter but much thinner in B and Q for £67. And the smaller for £25. Doesn't look as nice as this one but its still sturdy and same colour/size. Stones are not cheap. £10 at least per bag (4) and might use half a bag. Tubing and equipment around £70. Amzon and homebase mostly. And I scrimped as best I could.
VISIBILITY. The pond has been operational now for just over 2 weeks. Ive 3 small Gold fish. Smallest outdoor fish in the market now since the laws changed or so the fish stores all consistently tell me. As things stand. And the pond is set up identically. I can barely see the fish. The walls are very green. The gravel on the bottom must be very green. Can see about 15 cm down so if the fish are there I can see them ok. Ive tested the water. Its crystal clear. So the bog filter setup works well. But the Algae on the walls and floor are a problem. The terracota pot which was visible at the start, is now pretty much solid green with algae. No string Algae or anything like that thankfully.
Debating getting 2 or 3 lights for the bottom and see if that increases visibilty.
Admissions. I'm an amateur. Never done this before. But the pond is identically set up to this one, that is for sure. Can anyone offer tips as to how to remove the green from the sides and base? I've used the sponge which works but messes things up and the green comes back in 2 or 3 days. Can it be stopped long term? Its in the sun for 5 or 6 hours a day. Nothing can be done about that.
Cool idea! I like this project. Is there any reason we shouldn't put the debris removing pipe on the bottom of the pot, instead of the side? Seems like it would be a more effective way to remove all of the debris. Yes, I realize I'd have to cut a hole through the back of the bottom pot.
I don’t see why not, I’ve always just had it on the side, and it seems to have always worked well for getting rid of the debris. You would have to make sure you provide enough support around the hole you cut in the bottom though, as the hole may weaken the base a little. 👍
I wonder if doing with a solar panel and no battery in Florida, USA would be enough to keep the pond clean. My tank would be about 400 gallons and it would only be running while the sun is out.
Might work.. especially if you’re in Florida.. just make sure you include that non-return valve (or some other method), to prevent the water in the bog filter from syphoning back into the pond through the pump when the power go off! 👊
Where do you get the inline clean out isolating valves from for the bog filter and what size are they as you are using 1” pond tubing?
I can’t remember the size unfortunately, but anywhere that sells pond supplies will sell them 👍
Nice concept. Is there a reason the pipe from the pump into the filter enters at the top like that? Couldn't it just go in at the bottom? Just thought it would be neater, but maybe there's a reason you did it that way.
Thank you! No real reason other than its one less hole being drilled, and therefore one less chance for a leak. But it would look neater, for sure. One other reason though, for going in at the top, is it allows you to add a breather pipe, which is a good alternative to a non-return valve in stopping the back flow of water in the case of a power outage. Obviously I didn’t include the breather pipe in this design as I was using the non-return valve, but I think in the future I will move more towards the addition of a breather pipe, instead of the non-return valve as I think they may be more reliable, and also cheaper.
Can you tell me what pump you’d recommend for this type of pond as I’m looking at replicating it? Also are you able to list all the connectors you needed? Many thanks
Hi Peter, are you in the UK? if so, all the connectors I used were 21.5mm tank connectors from Wickes, it’s the only size they sell, along with the pvc, everything came from Wickes. Homebase also sell them, but for some reason they are 22mm there, would still work fine though. The pump I used in the video was cheap 1,500LPH submersible pump I bought on Amazon, which I had to turn right down using the flow regulator valve I put in, as it was far too powerful. However, after a few days the pump started making a noise, so I swopped it out, and ended up actually using a Fluval U3 internal filter which I added a bit of hosing to, to feed the bog. It produces just the right amount of flow without having to adjust it at all, And that has been working well now for a few weeks. Although I only really used that because I had it lying around.. But I did have a look at the pump size in it, and it is a 600LPH pump. So a 600LPH pump would be sufficient to run a setup like this, so long as you weren’t heavily stocking. The size of the pump needed will vary though depending on a few factors, such as how high it need to pump the water up (to the bog), what fish your planning on putting in, and how many of them. That being said a bog filter does not require a massive amount of flow to be affective, in fact too much flow and the bog filter will start to become less affective. Nice small pond but why put water inlet from top when iy would have been so easy to put another tank inlet and have more hoses hidden?
Are the deck boards secured to the big pot with screws/glue/etc, or just balanced on there? If nothing, does it feel steady and child-proof?
Just balanced, and seems pretty solid, but yeah like said, you could add some glue if you want to secure it up more 👍

Possibly too much light. Have you got any floating plants or a water lily providing shade?

@@jeffreyb8928 Water Lily is always good, and will flower nicely in full sun. Also, depending are where you are located water lettuce and water hyacinth also work well in the summer months. 👍

A hair dryer or heat gun for a few secs will make putting the hoses on much easier.
Yeah, defo need some heat.. I’ve recently taken to dipping the hosing in hot water which helped a fair bit.. but will try the hairdryer method!

Thank you! I’m not too sure on the exact size, but it about 70cm high, with a diameter of about 78cm. I got it at local garden centre.. Unfortunately I cant seem to find anywhere online currently selling it. The brand of it is ‘Kanten’ though.. Hope that helps! 😊

Hi , I have never done DIY but I am going to try and make your filter. How do you cut the hole in the planter so that the connectors fit them exactly? You don't use a uniseal or similar?? What size is the plastic pipe please. Do I need to buy pipe cutters. I will borrow a drill so what size round cutter do I need please? Thank you so very much and thank you for making this video. 😊
Hi Suzanne, I cut the hole in the planter using a 29mm hole saw (or hole cutter), which is the size to use if you are using the same 22mm tank connectors that I used. The plastic pipe is also 22mm. And you don’t necessarily need to buy pipe cutters, you could just use a junior hack saw, but a pipe cutter does make it a lot easier. Also is you’re using the tank connectors like i did in this video, they should come with little rubber washers that ensure a water tight seal. A Uniseal works in a slightly different way to tank connectors, but you could use a uniseal instead of a tank connector if you’re like. If you in the UK you should be able to get everything I used and listed here at Homebase, and probably Wicks too. Hope that helps, and good luck with your build. If you’re worried about drilling the holes and installing the tank connectors, you could always have a practice on a bit of scrap plastic or something before drilling into the plastic container you’re planning on using for your filter. That’s what I’ve done in the past if I’m a little unsure. Thanks for watching! 😊

The , water in pipe , is a 1 inch plastic pipe with 1 elbow. The clear plastic tubing that you use to go inside of that pipe , please would you tell me the size of that. Do I buy that from a fish store where I would also buy the pond hosing and metal fasteners and regulater stop cock ?

I’m not too sure on the size of the clear plastic tubing I used, but really it will be what ever size will fit your pump. Pond hosing, metal fasteners, regulator/ stopcock you should indeed be able to get from your local fish store. They should also be able to advise you on what hosing to buy for your pump. If your local fish store has a decent pond section, they may also sell the tank connectors and pvc pipe. Hope that helps! 😊

I got them from Homebase, but I don’t think they sell that type anymore.. i think they’ve gone all push fit now.. you should be able to pick them up from any good pond shop though 👍
Can this design survive a light freeze? We don't get super harsh winter temperatures, but we do get below zero especially at night.
Probably, but I wouldn’t like to say for certain. I had it set up all through last winter though, and that was a pretty harsh one. I did end up having to turn the pump off for a while though when it froze. Ideally you need to at least try and keep a hole in the ice at all times. Adding a cover helps a lot, and you could always add a small heater set to kick on if it gets really cold.
How does the air stone connect into the system?
It’s not connected to the pump or anything.. it’s just connected up to its own nano air pump, just to provide some extra oxygenation and also help push debris up to the pump. 👍😊

Hey bro, I think the only problem I’ve had is depending on what plants you use, they can grow so much that they can block things up to the point where the filter can overflow. For example, I like to use typha, as it’s really good at purifying the water, but it is a big plant with a big root structure, that can get out of hand if you don’t keep on top of it. Other than that I can’t think of too many other problems I’ve had.. but if I think of anything else I’ll let you know! 👊

🤔 What practical purpose does it serve to put the filter in the middle of the pond and not on the bottom where it would be more efficient and effective?
Yeah, ideally the pump (pre-filter) would go at the bottom, but I like to lift it up a bit, that way if there is a leak with the bog filter there is no way that the pond can be drained all the way. Then I use an air stone on the very bottom which should help push up some of the debris/ waste up to the pump. That’s the idea anyway.. Also, in the winter it means all I need to do is to lift the air stone up a bit, which allows the bottom part of the pond to stay nice and still, which provides an area for the fish to over winter.
Why dont you put the inlet through the base too?
Yeah, defo could have done that, it would have looked neater. Once the weather starts to warm up I’m going to be doing a big pond build, with a similar bog filter (but much bigger), and I plan to take the inlet in through the base for that one! Thanks for watching! 😊

Another question the water outlet with all the tiny holes...should that be completely covered with gravel so it doesn't suck air? Also I am starting with a green pond it is starting to get clearer, any suggestions?? I am waiting for plants as I have to plants in the pond.
@@roseanngibson4084 the water outlet with the holes doesn’t necessarily have to be covered, that’s up to you really. I personally like to cover it, so there is no water visible at the top of the bog. If there is water visible at the top of the bog, it tends to attract birds that like to come in for a drink, which is fine, but whilst they’re having a drink they tend to also poop in it, and that poop is very nutrient rich and can they cause algae. Also if you live an area where mosquitoes are an issue it’s best not to have visible water at the top of the bog, as they’ll be all up in that. As far the green water goes, the addition of the bog filter and plants should sort that out.. it may take a little while, but it will go clear. You could add a UV and that will clear it up in a week or 2, but the bog filter and plants will definitely also clear up the water, it may just take a little longer. 😊👍

I just wanted to say thank you on your advice. My pond has never been this clear in my life. I believe it was my homemade bog. It went from pea soup to crystal clear that I can see the bottom❤
I am building one similar with a wine barrel. The pump I have is too powerful at 1060l p/h. My question is will a pump at 750l p/h and 96cm head height be ok? (Bottom of barrel to top of bog filter is 88cm)
To be honest I do struggle trying to work out pump sizes, but from previous projects I’ve done, I would say 750LPH sounds about right!

Hi there, unfortunately I don’t know of anywhere specifically in the US where you can get a large planter like this one. But you’ll probably find something similar in one of the big-box stores, or a local garden centre. Also, if you can’t find one as big as the one that I used, a little bit smaller would be fine, especially if you’re just keeping a few guppies. The bigger it is just helps with keeping the water parameters more stable. Have you seen the channel ‘Aquapros’, he has done a few mini ponds using planters, and I know he is in the US, so you may be able to get a few ideas from a couple of his videos. 😊

I have one other place to look it's called at-home here and that store has a lot of outdoor planters but I will look up Aquapros because it's seems I may have to change directions. What size hole saw would I need for a 3/4 uniseal? I couldn't find a planter like yours here in the US. So I had to pick what I thought would be a decent size. I'm not happy😢 but it will work I guess.

Hi mate, there is a couple of things you can do to prevent the bog from overflowing. Firstly you could make the outflow bigger. The bigger the outflow, the quicker the water can flow back into the pond, and therefore reducing the chance of the bog overflowing. Secondly, if you’ve already built the bog, and you can’t change the size of the outflow, you could add a flow control valve, that way you can just reduce the flow down to the point that the bog will not overflow. Thirdly you could add a second outflow, a little higher than the current outflow, that way if the water can’t exit quick enough through the current outflow, it can go out the second outflow. Adding a second outflow is also handy if your main outflow gets blocked with plant roots or general debris, it give you a bit of time to get in there and do a bit of maintenance. Also, I always like to make sure that my pond pump is not in the very bottom of the pond. Instead I like to have it raised up off the bottom by a few inches, that way, if worst comes to worst and the bog filter does overflow, there is no possible way that the pond can be completely emptied, and therefore saving the fish. The planter that I used for the pond has a top diameter of 78.5cm (31 inches) and a depth of 70cm (28 inches)! 😊👍
